Top comment function actually stop people from commenting?

As a small creator with a small reader base, I realized new comments tend to stop appearing as soon as there is a new comment. People will tend to like the top comment rather than putting in their own comment.

Do you feel the same?

Not usually only if that comment says something I was about to comment
If anything I feel like more engagement makes other readers more engaged as well

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case! I've seen comments say almost verbatim what I was planning on saying and it definitely makes me stop for a moment. I try to comment anyways because I want to help the creator's engagement, but I can imagine other people might think they're a bother for saying the same thing. (They aren't!)

Personally, have a different experience......while readers will avoid repeating what the top commenter said, when they feel like it, they say different things or jokes related to the content......

I've only recently had frequent commentators comment on each other's posts. Interaction is rare, I think, and people are likely to be nervous about embarrassing themselves with a comment.

I think if the top comment just happens to be like, funny or like, something folks are relating to with the page, some people can just be kind of lazy and like it, yeah I get it-- I think that's just how comment sections with the top comment feature generally work. (Think about Youtube, it's the same way.)

I think the amount of comments you get can sometimes be effected by the time of day you post, but also, literally try asking your readers questions about how they like the page, their day, or their opinion, in your author's comment/update-- that almost always helps with getting comments! People like to be asked things and to express themselves!

Also, you could start trying to use the "author's pick" function for the top comment, picking your favorite one yourself and then folks can make it a little game to see which they can get you to like best? Just a thought.
