Daecon is a shapeshifter, which I'd say is a pretty traditional fantasy critter:

fairies in the world of my novel are regular sized people, my FL is constantly annoyed by the cliches, though the only fairy she knows IS angelically sweet, so she would never hurt anyone if she could avoid it. That said, if someone tried to hurt her son or husband she might have to poison them just a little bit
