What's the artistic opinion on this? I feel like we could all collectively agree we don't like the future of AI art. But what about using "AI art" to help out actual artists with certain steps? Are we advocates of AI art being used in this way?

I mean... In my opinion as a professional... all it really does is fix your levels and push the colours more saturated in most cases.

And on some of these pieces, that's an improvement because, yeah...some of you maybe do need to think a bit more about your levels and introduce a bit more contrast into your images. I don't necessarily feel like the more saturated colours are an improvement on any of these though. I hope maybe looking at what the AI did makes people go "Oh huh, a bit more contrast and using light to create focal points really makes my images pop!" and then takes that knowledge and doing it better and less garishly than the AI did.

Have to mention, on @TheSingularitySeed 's, the AI actually made it worse though, because the levels, contrast and colour were already really good, so it just looks a bit blown out.

Yeah, it doesn't seem to play well with high contrast. The foreground and background get confused and there's not much more for it to do lol

It does seem useful for testing out lighting quickly on softer colors.

Not the most ideal for cel-shading tho. The biggest improvements I saw in the twitter thread had originals without much shading or lighting. Or were more realistic in style which is what the program seems geared towards.

I think the coolest part is that it can add a soft shading to even flat colors. That'll work well for certain styles.

Just a neat tool overall.
But I agree the big benefit is being able to see your art in a new light and implementing that in a more harmonious way on your own.

Fun topic - I love checking out these tools.

Defaults didn't do my drawings any favors to the point where trying to optimize it seemed like a bad use of time . Maybe it depends on your style/willingness to tweak the settings? Tried both with a comic panel and something more like a lit portrait which I thought would be more suited to success with a tool like this (not my character btw - was a dtiys of Memphis who belongs to Chitabs).

I'll disagree. AI generation/assistance looks very much like another useful tool to me.

This time, I decided to leave on the original lights and not move them around because I couldn't come up with a good place to put the lighting. I can definitely see where the AI detects the characters, but with my art style it just looks like basic air brushing lol. Guess I'm not cut out for this, but I'm glad to see how it's working out for everyone else

Ok so— now I’m hearing from people that when you upload a photo the site steals your art. I didn’t realize this was the case. I wouldn’t have cared (since I’ve already been paid for the art) but seems the site’s creator is using it to make NFTs don’t recommend using anymore

Hey guys, maybe before uploading your art work to this AI lighting service, or indeed any tech firm, spare a thought for what they're doing with the permission you've just given them to alter your work.
I've yet to see a tech firm have the best interests of artists at heart.

Decided to go through their terms of service. I don't see anything about them taking your images, but I don't see anything that says they won't. Since by default it's illegal to steal someone's art, so if there's actual evidence that this is doing that, then justice definitely needs to be served.

The co-creator of this site is into NFTs (I don't promote NFTs for obvious reasons as an artist) and I'm not sure if it's confirmed that artworks that are used there are going to be stolen and made as an NFT.
