For some years I tried to make comics, but my lack of ability (even after training) for traditional drawing put all my projects on an eternal limbo. Then I started to study 3D modeling, specially for game development. Now, almost 7 years after my first try, I'm trying to come back using what I learned with 3D modeling.
I know some see it as an "heresy", but, well, I'm on this for fun. I already have a job in the game industry, but writing stories and giving graphic form to it is my passion too.
Some months ago I started to watch tutorials about how to use Blender to make comics, and I decided to try to make my own style. Took a lot of trial and error, but this weekend I managed to get a result I liked. Of course I'll hate it in the future, but for now is what I can do.
This was my test today:
I did the render in Blender using freestyle for lines, a shader called Lightning Boy Shader 2.0 (paid) to get this NPR feel, with textures made in Substance Painter, and some post-edit with Clip Studio, adding some extra lines and the tone. Not perfect, but way better than my hand draw old comics.
And I can get different renders, depending on what finish I want. For this one I rendered just a blank image with the lines (white color in the object), and did the painting in Clip Studio. I didn't put much effort in this painting, it was only a test.
I'll restart one of my comics first, the Artistic Neuron Tutorial show all the steps to get this result. Will be a nice warm up while I don't start the main comic.
