I dislike woobified villains with a passion.
Don't make your villain do horribly messed up things and expect a tragic backstory to sweep it under the rug. It's lazy.
It might be a root cause to their actions, but it ain't an excuse. And too many writers for comics, shows (looking at you, Steven Universe) or whatever use this to make the villains forgivable.
They make their villains do horribly messed up things, things they should be punished for. But the moment they shed a few tears, all is 110% forgiving and they don't face any consequences for the wrong they've done.
Suddenly, the real victims are forgotten and we have to focus on the villain's tragic past.
Bunk that.
If you've made your villain, say, murder innocent children and enjoy it, I'm not gonna care that they lost a puppy when they were 11. Doesn't distract from the child murders.
