On Tapas, it's generally required to have 250 subscribers before unlocking the support feature. so how do some creators manage to unlock support with fewer than 250 subscribers?

During inksgiving, creators are given a chance to unlock ink normally. They still have to meet certain conditions.
This mostly happens on discord now so you should pop over there.

You can find the discord link directly in your creator hub with all your comics/novels, it's a pop up on the side where your "sub goals" are. I don't think anyone (or maybe just mods) has the permissions to share the discord link.

But also to be clear this is like the adsense thing. A lot of people really want to get to 100 subs to unlock adsense thinking they'll start making money then and there, not realising that at 100 you're unlikely to be making more than a cent per month if that.

With donations, unless you already have a really dedicated fanbase or a couple of very invested and rich fans who have told you they want to support you financially, you're not going to get anything that'll get you over that 25USD minimum requirement to cash out your earnings. Inksgiving is the only real time you're likely to get donos at all under 250 subs, that's why it's the exception to the rule, just so you're warned and don't get any false hope.
