Unpopular Opinions! (Anime and Manga Edition.)

I had to force myself to pick up Deathnote after dropping it and push through it. Since Light was basically able to predict everything that ever happened, he always had to give a 10 minute play-by-play of how he got there and absolutely hated that. It felt almost cringey at times (based on the anime, I didn’t read the manga).

I think my only relatively unpopular opinion is that I genuinely like Fairy Tail quite a lot. It's certainly not without its flaws, but it never ceases to amaze me how much and often it gets dunked on in the general anime/manga community. Always feels like there's the group that strongly likes it, the larger group that strongly hates it, and very little in-between.

It ticked all of my boxes though: cool world, liked the vast majority of the cast (heroes and villains inclusive), fun fights that didn't overstay their welcome, jammin' OST. Masterful writing? Nah. But aside from one of the filler arcs and the ending arc being kinda mediocre, it managed to hold interest and hype the whole way through so it was a win in my book Haven't yet checked out the 100 Year Quest sequel manga, might someday or if it gets animated.

@SpavVy Well, when I see anyone talking about AOT, my first question is "How far have you watched?"
If you're caught up to the anime(at least S3 part 2), then your thinking of the characters being shallow could be a bit..... I thought the same but after catching up till the fourth season, my opinions changed massively. I couldn't care less about some characters but now, every last one of them is pretty precious to me.

@Rhonder I watched exactly 50 episodes of Fairy Tail. Finished whatever arc was going on there and put it on hold for a bit. It was pretty nice, minus all the worthless fanservice (-_-). Plan to watch the whole thing some time soon.

Exactly, and that's why fights exist where the underdog can win too. Otherwise it's just linear fights with a already determined winner

I watched two seasons and half of the 3rd. For me, that was more than enough.

Yeah, well if you can, stay for the story then. I won't discourage anyone to watch more AOT.... [Erwin is a better character.....Levi is the muscle... I fricking hate Eren but I'll stay cuz I wanna see how all this end.]

But one thing I will say is "DON't STOP AFTER PART 1".....s3 part2 is practically the peak of AOT till s4.
Once you watch part 2, I can pretty much guarantee you'll crave more. Why am I advertising a show like this? Because I felt empty like that too. I was reluctant to continue after season 1. A friend pushed me to and once I finished part 2 of season 3, I was feeling the adrenaline in my blood all the time for days.

Give it a go. I'll be here to eat my words anyway if you don't like it. XD

Not just for anime/manga but very common for them. Lots of manga in particular, needs to just stop. Lots of popular manga in particular, you can track the moment it's popularity picked up dramatically (often in line with it getting an anime adaption just aired) and the story line starting to stretch. And I'm not going to say it's not planned, but it definitely feels like it's stretching out longer and longer and arc that weren't arcs they were maybe a chapter of mild interest suddenly become arcs that last a year. Side characters that wouldn't have had names suddenly get fully fleshed out backstory arcs. The plot becomes more and more tangled and a story that should have been a comfortable few years and couple of arcs is suddenly going on for 30 years and shows no signs it remember the actual plot that it claims to still be heading towards every now and again with a throw away line in the middle of the battle against aliens about to destroy the world reminding us they're still trying to discover the mystery of who stole their lunch at school.

Also the "you just don't understand" brigade. Again, not just anime/manga but there do seem to be a lot of people who hold anime/manga up as some kind of deeper, better media and if you don't like a popular, acclaimed anime/manga it's because you don't get it. You don't understand the deep, serious metaphors and meanings behind it, here let me explain why you're wrong and you should like it because of the deeper metaphor and meanings behind it. Because all anime and manga should be held up as masterpieces that always have a deeper meaning and you'll like it if you understand the meaning and all other issues you have won't matter anymore.

Okay, heres a trope that a lot of people dislike, but I'm cool with it to the point of being able to enjoy it: The power of friendship/friendship trumps all.

It's cheesy, sickly saccharine, and is essentially used as a "let's end the fight now" button. but I don't really get ticked off with it. Plus it's usually accompanied by, like a really cool background and neat affects, so that's a bonus.

Nah I'm all set If I can't get invested in the story by the time I'm nearly halfway through the 3rd season then to me it's not worth it especially if I don't like the characters.

-‘Love Live! Sunshine’ is better than the first ‘Love Live!’ series, due to more realistic and relatable characters, better music and the whole plot appeared more realistic (well, in the world of LL!, I mean xD)

-!Spoiler! MHA: Nighteye was a throwaway character who was just brought into the series to jerk some tears out of the fans by showing a Hero dying. I felt he was poorly introduced/handled and his death was cheesy and boring (and I really cry easily). I felt sadder for Magne and I hardly had any connection to her....

-Weebs aren’t that bad. Only those who try to gatekeep or claim a series as their own because “I have seen/read it first!” are the turds of western Anime culture. They are a noisy minority and should be ignored away.
Also, dubs aren’t that bad most of the time.

-‘Giant Robo: the day the earth stood still’ is one if the best Anime OVAs (if not THE best) out there. And it breaks my heart that it’s so forgotten/overlooked.

Maybe if he was introduced some arcs earlier one could have gotten more invested to him......

As Almight's ex side-kick, he could have had a bigger role......

Exactly. I understand that the two characters were estranged and therefore All Might would’ve not really talked a lot about him and such. But he was still an important part of his past and a well known hero. It would’ve been cool if he appeared prior in some ways so that viewers/readers could establish a proper bond . Instead it just appeared like he was shoehorned in for some quick feels and...I just really didn’t care for him and his arc.
I mean, lotsa people found his death dramatic and sad and that’s fine. But it could’ve been a lot better and more authentic, imo
