I've been feeling kind of burnt out/bogged down with my current comic, Aetherwing, and not that I don't love the story and love working on it, I just seem to be having difficulty with it lately. I also made the mistake of operating without a decent sized buffer, as I am only a week ahead. It's been getting quite stressful.

I do however have a 15 page one-shot from a different story that is fully sketched out and partially (mostly) inked. It's complete and can be read without any prior knowledge of other things in that story. It's a little over a year old but I believe the art and writing both definitely still hold up and I'm still quite proud of it.

What I'm thinking of doing is taking a sort of break from Aetherwing updates, and by break I mean cutting it down to one page weekly instead of two. In place of the monday update, I'll be posting a page of this other story, and in the mean time getting the chance to finish that as well as catch up with Aetherwing and form a buffer. I think working on something different in tandem with Aetherwing will give me the break I need to be able to get back to it's regular schedule.

I'd love to know what everyone's thoughts on this are. Also here's a couple examples of what I have so far of the one shot. This is just the line art and more work will be done on them before I post them.

It looks great! The lines are so smooth <3
And by all means, go ahead and just do one page per week for Aetherwing, I'm sure your readers wouldn't mind.

For me I have three series with different styles between each of them to keep me from burn-out/boredom.

Wow! I don't know if I could keep up with three series at this point but that's really cool. I really need to check out your work.

This other project being completely sketched out definitely helps. It also helps that this story in particular has been my baby for a long time (it's a much larger universe, but this functions on its own.) I may consider doing more than one series at once in the future to keep my interest.

Thanks for the advice!

I think you should! :') I find a lot of readers very understanding if you keep them in the loop. Perhaps you can make an announcement on these recent developments just so they know.

I'm currently doing that, I'm working on a horror anthology in place of my other 2 comics just so I don't get burnt out by drawing the same old thing all the time. And it's helping me regain motivation for my other 2 projects! :'D

I've been getting burnt out a little myself lately and I've been thinking of doing the same thing, I think taking a hiatus and focusing on a fresh project might not be such a bad idea at all, as long as your fans know about it

Well you are definitely not alone in wanting to do another project judging from everyone else's posts. I've also become burned out from just working on one series. I agree with everyone else that its okay to take a break for a while. Your readers will understand.

Doing several projects at once is how I handle this kind of burnout too!

If I just did 100% Grassblades 100% of the time - well, I'd get more done faster, but I would be SO BORED. I love the story, I really do, but my brain craves variety. I resolved, going into this, that for as long as I'm working on Grassblades, I'm going to pick at least one sideproject every year to work on - usually some kind of short oneshot comic, but anything is fine - just for variety's sake. It's been working well so far..

Yeah I've basically been doing only Aetherwing for quite awhile- and I feel like I could churn out 3-4 pages a week logically, but I find myself only being able to work on 2 and even that takes awhile. I don't have time for any other drawing and it's quite frustrating :/

I think that is a WONDERFUL idea. If you kept plugging along at a project that you already realize you feel burnt out on, it'll only make you resent the process. You'll also be able to make some stylistic changes with a side project that you may not want to do with your main project. And the accomplished feeling of completing a short side project will give you a great boost of confidence!

Not sure how smart this is, but to avoid getting tired with my own comic I started working on increasing my buffer a bit. With enough comics ahead, I started working on a second comic that's a bit diffferent from my current one. However, I'm not currently uploading any of the pages of my second comic yet, so that when I do begin to post it, I'll already have a buffer in place. When I get sick of my new comic, I feel more encouraged and engaged in getting more pages done for my current one. I just jump back and forth between the two, while avoiding missed deadlines. This might sound crazy and almost counterproductive to a point, but it's really helping me out.

I believe this second comic is a great way to help reignite your passion for your main comic and present your readers with another story. I have three comics, one is and action, adventure, the second one is a romantic drama and the last one is a gag comic. Each comic maybe presented in the same way but their tones and what they offer the readers are completely different. So my suggestion your two project should be different so one can't replace the other.
