Webcomic with animation chapters?

so I'm guessing manny on here has probably heard of homestuck or avasts demon and their animation chapters, I was wondering what your take on doing this on your own web comics and in web comics you've read, do you guys think its a good idea? and if soo how would you guys integrate it in tapastic, just a link in the descrpcion of an episode? or something else?

would love your guys opinion on this

While you can't do full length 5 minute animations and stuff to post on Tapas, you can put a link to the 5 minute thing in the description.

But that doesn't mean you can't do animations at all:




If you save your animation as a .gif you can post it on Tapas as an animation although the 2MB limit will seriously limit what you can post, but you can always post multiple gifs in sequence.

Currently it's a little hard to apply, since my manga Remember is aimed at a print version. I have thought about making an animated version of an upcoming scene which would provide a really awesome effect, but I was a little hesitant, since print copies can't exactly play gifs XD

How would you guys solve that problem? =)

you know isn't there like a kindle for comics or something?, that would be awesome and we could past animations on it, if there isn't someone should get on that

Good idea, although I have no idea on how to put anything on kindle =) But everthing can be learned, right?

Good suggestion - however, what would you do with a panel, which gets overlayed with another scene for just a second? And the 2nd image is transparent so you'd see the underlying panel the whole time? =)

Hmm... I guess you'd have to just make them two panels in the print then.

Maybe I should upgrade my comic from page format to scrolldown format for tapas Oo I think that way it shouldn't be much of a problem, right? @_@

That's probably a good idea although I do know of webcomics that were adapted to print from a vertical webcomic format, but it does take a little work to adapt from webcomics to print.

I think it's a great idea to incorporate a little bit of animation, though it is a lot work I do believe it should be used to highlight something quite important. For example, in my opinion it would be great to use animation to see a panorama of a landscape or to make the reader watch a scene with a character, like some fireworks !

I know a few of them, too =)
However, I'm still working with ink and good ol' paper, so I basically have a print ready version of a page - I just have to adapt it to webcomic format though =)

Extras in your print book! Use the frames from the animation however you need to in print form, maybe using one or two keyframes as panels, whatever, in the actual comic. Just as the panels in any comic are simply key seconds in an actual action or event.

But then, have a section in the back of your print comic that shows the animation process including more or all of your frames! You could put whatever you want in these Extras pages: any sketches or storyboards you did, a little tutorial on making GIFS, the sky is the limit.

But it's always a great idea to have extra content in your print comic, to encourage the purchase of something which was already offered free online. Showing your animation process would be a great Extra!

I think it kind of depends on how you want to tell the story and if you can keep up with it.
I've noticed (and I have done so myself) that animation is used a lot to condense action onto one page so the viewer doesn't have to click forward all the time. I've actually stopped reading a comic because I was annoyed at having to click the next button all the time. There was just so much going on and me trying to understand and then clicking next was jarring.

I'm not going to point to any specific Homestuck page but some of the animations Hussie made were used to quickly move the story along. He condensed what could have been pages of dialogue and individual frames into one page of 5-8 animated story.
I will one page from my comic Pecan Pie, Time Flies Back . It condenses maybe what could have been two pages, just to one page. This helps move my story forward and made my story more alive.

If you check my link, I have uploaded the animated pages onto Tapastic as gifs. I know of some others that post their animations either on youtube or their personal website and link from Tapastic to there. Living When Dead by Koolaid-Girl is a great example for animations on personal websites and I think it works for them, especially since their animations have music and special effects I don't think Tapastic can handle.

I already love to animate in general so adding animation is fun for me. I usually add animation for interesting and moving scenes, like lightning strikes, flashes, water splash or bus moving. This is what I think animation is useful for. Stuff that is hard to show in panels or stuff that takes a lot of panels. If I wanted to show a bus leaving the station, i would have to take two panels to establish the bus on the station, then to show that the bus left on the next. Why not just compress it into one panel and use tweening? I also think it adds some nice flavour and some eye candy if your good at animation. If you can do "sakuga" it would work really well. My comic has quite a bit of animations and stuff so yeah.
