Also, since I've barely been on any forums at all in that month, here are some very belated responses:
@Caelestie: Well, "great" is in no way synonymous with "famous" or "recognized." Also, I wasn't talking about the exact moment of creation. I have bipolar disorder, myself, and when I'm in a low period, I basically can't produce anything. But the memories of those feelings often find their way into what I create weeks or months later.
@keii4ii: It begs the question, though: Is it possible to hate working on something but still be passionate about it in a sense? Also, that's definitely where the "practice" aspect comes in. He might have hated that particular piece, but he'd poured decades of passion into studying his craft beforehand.
