It has 71k subs, it's further down at this point, for which I'm glad (as weird as that may sound) but a few days ago I found it on the 7th row for free comics (I remember it cuz I discussed about it with someone on discord) so personally I just don't like this 24/h removal because comics like mine take up those spots even if it's not been updated in 2 months while a new comic gem is stuggling to climb up in those ranks.

Hmm...I would think the hate premium comics get will lessen now that free and premium content can be split, which was a good move. imo the advertisment is fine, sure there's a lot, but they don't advertise in the notifications often.
On the site you can now pretty much avoid all premium content by making your tapas bookmark this for example; https://tapas.io/comics?b=POPULAR&g=&f=F2R3

Yeah, that definitely helps! They've made strides with it but there are still things that need to be fixed, such as the 24/h removal.

That being said though, I'd like to point out that it's not solely "Premium" by the technical definition, despite my wording in places lol I'm also referring to 'mainstream' which can also include free to read comics. As I've mentioned before, Sarah's Scribbles, Rock & Riot, theodds1out, etc. are all very popular comics and are also free-to-read. But they've got plenty of subscribers and influence as it is (and in Rock & Riot's case, it hasn't updated in three years), so why do we see them getting promoted in every genre-based Trending tab on the landing pages for comics that are nowhere near those numbers? (in the case of those three comics, the Comedy genre specifically, which is one of the more competitive genres).

As someone else here stated once a while back, it feels very much like the website is going "Hey why waste your time reading this, look at THESE comics instead". If they're going to make a series landing Trending tab, make it varied and perhaps set it to the same metrics as the comic being read so that it continues to vary as the comic itself gains more subs or grows a bigger community. That way other comics in that same genre have a better chance of getting seen, and the comics that are already constantly dominating the top rows in the Popular section and the front page of the website don't get yet another avenue for promotion, and one so small, specific, and not even guaranteed to show up (if you have multiple series) that they really don't need it the way someone with a new series or fewer subs might.

And again, that's assuming the Trending tab even shows up. If someone has multiple series - something that's completely out of our control as creators who may be trying to get our work out there - then that avenue is gone. And as I mentioned in my big conspiracy post from a couple nights ago, the majority of free to read creators have multiple series. So this almost intentionally disenfranchises the smaller free to read comics that don't have the advantage of dominating the front page every single day even more.

So in addition to the Trending tab needing to not be so biased towards comics that are already getting that front page/Popular section exposure constantly (or were popular 5 years ago and have literally not updated since), they need to either make it accessible to everyone regardless of whether they have multiple series, or not at all. It just seems foolhardy to have it only appear for some people and not others depending on something so mundane as whether or not they have more than one series - and then when it does, it's the same shit you just saw 30 seconds ago on the front page or Popular section.

On another semi-related note, I know people are discouraged right now that they're not hearing back from Tapas at the moment, but let's please remember that it's Saturday. So we'll probably not hear anything official until Monday. I know it's hard because they've been largely silent even up until now regarding a lot of issues, but let's all hang in there  And remember, whatever you decide to do for your future is your decision. Recognize it, own it, and learn from it, for better or for worse

The conspiracy theories here are making me really uncomfortable. There’s so much baseless speculation. We’re in the middle of a global pandemic, and the site redesign is less than a month old. The Bay Area is in lockdown, so I’m sure the Tapas team are all doing their best while still trying to obey social distancing procedures. Like, I get coming here to offer feedback or report a bug, but do we have to speculate on this reason or that reason or investors etc? Because it’s all stuff we know nothing about anyway, real talk, and it’s a bad look as well to be bitching about, idk, Tencent, when we have no idea if investors had anything to do with it or what Tapas’ reasons were for the redesign.

Well.. Part of me agrees. But this is what happens when you make a decision that has impact on people without telling them why.
Imagine this corona world lockdown. Without telling why? We try to accept the world pandemic because we understand the why.

Even that Tapas is not bound to say. There is just a huge WHY

Edit: There was a big why we should make new covers. And we embraced that part. But no warning or why at this.

And we still need to know how Ink works? There is still a big why

No offence but this isn’t the coronavirus lockdown. That was a needlessly overblown comparison. I get feeling strongly about something but please keep some perspective.

Ya, that might be a bit over the top.
But point is that I believe it is in human nature to always seek the why. And when that is not accessible the human nature starts to guess.

But I do think that we are going nowhere and this is only starting to hurting us all now.

It is as you said. Uncomfortable

I don't see how we can speak of 'conspiracy' theories.
Michaelson said the redesign was not due to Tapas being sold to another company. I tend to believe him, because he could totally have avoided the question, which I would expect him to have done in this case, rather than lying.

So, if it's not that, we're looking at something less drastic:
Either:
- Pressure from investors
- Decision made by the Tapas team in the light of what's the competition is doing
- A bit of both

All possibilities are open and not unlikely. They're plenty of precedents for all cases. Imagining a rushed decision due to investor pressure is imagining Tapas fell into a common, everyday issue.

Now if someone says Tapas redesign is a job of the secret services to shut up a dissident/foreign creator...:laughing:

I feel like the thread here is getting uncomfortable and it’s not encouraging to read at all. Let’s keep it to bugs and main problems related to design/exposure/observations, at a sane & respectful level lmao. As we know the design is not going to change back, we have to suggest improvements on how it’ll work better in numbers and short texts.

Such as the need of the endless scroll/ need of banner being mentioned by a lot of people. There’s no need for conspiracy, philosophy, texts which the staff can’t use in fixing/thinking up possible solutions. How about another thread for long, personal rants? :blank: That’s valid too, but quite useless here.

If anything, mentioning that these decisions were probably made by an upper management/investor system of sorts keeps people's expectations grounded when it comes to possibly reverting the site. People keep asking for it and while it would be a nice pipe dream, it's like 99% certain it's not gonna happen because it's just not realistic. Time and paid labor was put into it, which means a lot of money was put into it. And considering Michael actually has avoided the question then it's obvious we're not going to see an answer in the form of a rollback, possibly not even as gracious as an actual response to the question, "Why was this necessary in the first place?"

I'm definitely not saying we need to be wearing tinfoil hats here lmao I'm saying we as creators have the right to recognize Tapas' pattern of behavior these last few years and how it factors into their current decisions - and how it will undoubtedly shape their future ones, as well as our own as creators. We can turn this into just a bug-reporting thread, sure - but just reporting the bugs is sort of missing the bigger problem that's let it get this far in the first place. You can't put a band-aid on a bullethole, you need to remove the bullet. The redesign, the bugs, the current lack of features that were simple and doable that are now gone for some reason, such as banners - it's all a symptom of a much bigger problem, which boils down to Tapas' lack of transparency about what sort of platform they're trying to be, and for who. If they're trying to go through a complete rebrand (again, technically, because they went through their first big one when they changed to Tapas and released the app) then that's fine, but they need to communicate that. They can't expect to just make changes willy nilly without some amount of community backlash and speculation - especially when they've been largely silent on the issues in return. Yes, the circumstances are plenty different at a time like this, but all the while plenty of us are using this time to decide if it's worth waiting around for them to fix these issues if the reason why they're issues in the first place are never being addressed.

Also - and this is me being crass, I'll probably get the paddle for it - the Tapas staff may not operate on weekends, but the mods are free reign. And I haven't seen any topic redirection from them yet. After all, it's called "Website updates and collecting feedback", isn't it? And the thread itself was created to compile everyone's complaints and feedback into one thread because before it was made, there were like 6 different loose threads on the topic. The only other one that exists now is the user-run poll thread. So part of me would like to believe that even the mods know that Tapas' behavior surrounding the update is still relevant even if it's not standard bug-reporting. But maybe that's just my own pipe dream lmao I'm almost definitely going to get an ass whooping after this, aren't I?

Now I know their situation is different, but here's some funny food for thought - over on GlobalComix, the community asked for banners, and they had it done within the hour. Tapas obviously has its differences in that it's an actual office with a chain of command and need approval on what they can work on at any given time, vs. GC which is run by a very small staff without investor support (afaik). But GC also has a really small staff and it seemed to be zero issue for them to do. Would it really be that hard for Tapas to add something that we had already programmed into the website prior to the update? IDK how much their backend has changed from a designer/programmer perspective, but it can't have been that severe that they can say they "don't know how to do it". The longer time goes on, especially considering the banners were some of the first things people asked to have back basically as soon as this thread was up, before all the COVID-19 shutdowns, tells me that their answer wouldn't be "we couldn't figure it out", but rather "It's not in our game plan even though there's community demand for it" or even more tongue-in-cheek, "Webtoons doesn't do it, so we're not doing it."

So yes, I do think people need to manage their expectations. Right now my expectations - as well as those of many others - have been brought down to the lowest bar possible for Tapas. Because they've proved we can't expect much better of them through their actions alone. It's gonna take a lot of bug fixes to put a dent in that iceberg.

In the meantime, yes, we have to be patient, I'm not denying that. We have to wait for Tapas to achieve some semblance of normalcy in these rough times. But we can also be there for each other as creators while we decide if sticking it out further is worth it considering Tapas' circumstances of making a lot of the same mistakes over and over again while ignoring the bigger issue causing said mistakes.

Is there any way to have an option to let those who prefer the old look to have that? Like Deviantart has for their site. An option to keep the old look while still having the new one there if people prefer that. That way, everyone wins.

If so.. It would have been there by now.

hey just my five cents, having read on the site for a few weeks since the redesign--I really don't like how the subscribe button ever leaves the screen. IMO the "SUBSCRIBE" should be clear, it should be visable, (and it should look nice) and it should never, under any circumstances, leave your screen. We need these subs. I can't be having people pull up a menu to sub. Ever. Not ever. Most people will not be bothered to do it.

Most readers will just read, and then close the screen and then come back days later to this forum saying "heeyyy I was reading a comic that had x y z, does anyone know what it's called???" <--which happens, way too often.

Like if the subscribe button was in a top corner the way tumblr does it--where it just always hangs there, despite how you scroll--I feel like it would help most of us since it would encourage more follows and hopefully encourage more people to join the platform.

I like this idea! :tapa_pop:

Wasn't it like that with the older design? In the top right area?

We are currently working infinite scrolling but do not have an updated eta at this moment. We are trying to address the memory/load time issue.

Apologies for the radio silence - we have been working on updating the website with additional fixes and and adjustments (some of which haven't been shipped yet). We will be making an additional announcement shortly about an update to the web/mobile apps along with a list of next steps for the website. We had to execute a time-sensitive server migration which has delayed some of the additional fixes. Apologies for those delays.

I'll only really be responding to product update questions - while we are reading and monitoring the responses, I feel that part of the discussion has gotten really off topic and aren't conducive to making the website better.

And for those worried, we appreciate the kind thoughts. We have been practicing safe social measures during the covid-19 situation, our entire staff is working from home for the foreseeable future, and have set up thoughtful support infrastructure to ensure both the physical and mental health of staff members. Right now, we're working on creator reach out for our premium creators to figure out what we can do to help during this time - along with helping out our part time and freelance team members.

During this time, we've been working around the clock to also prep the site and apps to better support all creators on Tapas financially for the month ahead - we'll be making an announcement around this shortly as well.

Suffice to say, this has all come at an inopportune time and the real world events that we're seeing are all unprecedented. We are committed to listening to the feedback for the website updates and implementing those in a timely fashion, while also simultaneously trying to address the aforementioned real world events and it's mental, physical and financial impact it has had on our community.

Glad to hear from you! Hope you guys continue to stay alert and healthy! <3

Thank you so much for the response, Michael! It gives us much relief to hear that you and the Tapas team are healthy and well!

I also really appreciate the response and care for creators Tapas consistently shows and I look forward to the announcement. :hype_01: :heart_03:

Wishing you all best!

Relieved to hear that you are all safe! Thank you so much for your hard work and for implementing these precautions, I hope you'll all continue to stay healthy and well - thanks again for taking the time to listen to your creators despite the current global situation, Tapas staff are awesome! :tapa_pop: :yellow_heart:

Good to hear you and the staff are doing fine! And I'm pretty interested in the announcement! Stay safe! And thanks for keeps us up to date!

Thank you for keeping us updated, and really glad to hear you're all safe and as mentally healthy as possible in these circumstances!

Quick question, not sure if this is the right place but i'll try anyway. I saw an ink spring sale on the app, but it doesn't seem to be on the desktop version, is that normal?

Good luck with all the fixes and new stuff you guys are working on, and stay safe!

Yes - some sales will be app only.

Just saw the newsletter, thank you so much for all that you're doing, everything mentioned sounds like it's going to be amazing! :hype_01:

Hey, not sure if this has been brought up or addressed, but I haven't been able to earn ink through watching ads on my computer since the website update went live.

Was the ability to earn ink through ads on your computer phased out in the new website update?

I used to be able to watch ads all the time and is how I normally earned ink, but since the update, it always just says "no free ink offers", that never used to happen and no other circumstances have changed (same wi-fi and location ect.)

I can still earn ink through watching ads on the mobile app, but not the desktop, so I was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing this and if it was part of the update

No - it's still available, but I believe the desktop ads are being requested at a much higher rate than our ad providers have inventory for. We use multiple ad providers for the desktop and apps and there are times where the ad providers are unable to provide adequate inventory which is outside of our control.

Since no one else reported this issue - @michaelson, is it normal for the progress bar on ad revenue to just disappear? I'm still 30 or so away from a hundred(older picture), but a few days after the first update the bar that should be over Balance just disappeared on my dashboard. I thought the Cover update would fix it but it's still gone.

I've filed a ticket for this issue. Thanks for reporting!

I'm glad that the staff is fine, and I hope that Tapas is able to continue work soon on fixing more things with this redesign (although, understandably, there'll probably be major delays considering the pandemic).

It's been a month now, though, and I think that a lot of the initial criticism received is still resonating - that it's unfair to creators to have had a site-wide beta test pushed on them and impact their readership. I really dislike that Tapas has become essentially a Webtoon clone, and reading on desktop is now just a chore that I'd rather not be bothered with. I think one of Tapas' biggest issues was simply that it's mobile app just wasn't that good and needed to be more intuitive, but now work towards fixing that has made the exact same problems bleed onto the desktop. Tapas had a superior desktop experience to Webtoon, which is why I preferred it for reading on desktop and preferred Webtoon for reading on mobile, and it's just disappointing to me as both a creator and a reader that random, unnecessary changes came out and haven't gone away, and are still managing to harm the user experience.

I'm not going to make this any longer, since there have already been rants -- I just want this to be my feedback made on the forum. I'm very close to graduation and would love to move towards doing comics or stories as a means of making money (especially considering I'll probably be stuck at home for a good while because of the Coronavirus), and before last month I would have readily picked Tapastic as a platform of choice for doing it. But now... I really don't enjoy being a user, and I hope a lot is done soon on making the experience not just patched and fixed but cohesive and good.

Mature section show all series as unsubbed in desktop website.

@michaelson @Yoon any insight to this?

as for my usual dosage of disgruntled sass, how long does it take a website with an actual company and pipeline production managing it to put banners back in? You've got the option to upload one built into the Dashboard but I can't tell if it was someone putting them back in who got distracted halfway or if it's just the leftover settings from pre-update that weren't removed. Uploading a banner with that option to do so only for it to still appear as those generic genre-based colors is sorta rubbing salt into the wound, don't ya think?

I know it's a stressful time right now due to the pandemic, but as people have stated already, it's been over a month now and there are still a lot of things you guys seem to be blatantly dodging or just leaving to let sit without any clarification or answers.

If you're not planning on making them available again then that's your decision, but at least remove the option to upload and communicate the change so we can be informed.

You say that but episode tags haven't done anything in years. It's not hurting anybody to leave it there, a text that it's unused at the moment will do. No need to be so antsy weekly.

so all we've achieved with highlighting that is pointing out yet another issue with tapas' accessibility but that's a whoooole other pot of tea that I'm not really into brewing rn.

The lack of functionality for both banners and tags are both issues in and of themselves lol Just because something else also happens to be an issue doesn't mean you should discount the first issue, it just means now you have two issues :confetti_ball: They're minor issues in the grand scheme of things, yes, but I don't see how one existing should discount the other, that's all.

(also i'm sure creators who played with meta tags as a part of their stories ex. harry bogosian, or users who depended on tags for decent SEO would beg to differ that the broken tagging system "isn't hurting anybody" lmao now they DEFINITELY don't do anything now that they don't even show up attached to episodes anymore, and that is definitely a drawback all on its own lol)

It's not a matter of being "antsy", I've already got a foot out the door lol It's a matter of making sure those issues aren't being forgotten about or pushed aside because people are still demanding for them and patiently waiting. I don't want to see people's patience get worn thin when that level of communication could have just been there in the first place.

I'll also add that it was just a point tacked on to the tag I did for the previous user who posted here a couple days ago, as tagging the staff typically always gets a faster response. At the rate the forum threads move, stuff gets buried easily so it's encouraged to tag staff members when you can if you need their immediate attention, which also includes reporting bugs. That was the main reason I responded, everything else was a dose of salt regarding my concerns, meant for staff. Just like reporting the bugs, it's not really something that I'm intending to turn into deeper discussion on a user level.

We enabled the option to give a chance to download it to someone who doesn't have a backup file.

Well.. which one are you talking about?

I take it that banners don’t come back then?
And we are now happy with the standard collar given?

We have a prototype version which has the top banner (Series Banner; it's not the same as the previous one.) and the product team is developing a live version now. Please give us time and wish us luck. We'll see if we can release a new version.
Thank you,

I don't know if it's just me because we have a storm here today, but the website is being incredibly slow. Like I will click a heart and it doesn't register until 5 seconds later. It's making it difficult to go through comic updates since there are so many clicks to get to the update.

I have to first click update alerts. Wait for it to load. Then click the notification itself (which sometimes takes multiple clicks). Wait for it to load. Then I have to reorder the list to newest (because it keeps resetting to oldest for some series for some reason). Wait for it to load. Then I can FINALLY click on the new episode. Wait for it to load. Then heart it. Wait for it to load.

Rinse and repeat for ten different series.
