Webtoon Confuses Me

Like what are the standards?

I feel like more and more, I'm coming across horror stories of creators who make let's say
salacious content only to have their comic banned. And on top of that, apparently something as innocuous as cleavage can get you Thanos snapped from the platform. All of which I see as unfair because there is a market for such comics and art work, sexual or not, and it's kind of wild what length platforms go to regulate that. And yes, I know, I know, if not these lengths then the likelihood of maintaining app space is zero. It's unfortunate but true.

And now you may be asking: "Wait, what's this got to do with you?" Well, I'm so glad you cared enough to ask. How sweet of you .

By now I'm sure all of you have read my comic, and if not... How dare you. I'm offended. But in all seriousness, the cover and the first few pages feature characters in skin tight and revealing outfits that feel like enough to get my comic banned, or at least something negative I assume, on Webtoon (though non of it is in a sexual setting). But nothing has happen. Now, maybe it's because my comic only began updating on the platform earlier this year, it's still pretty small, it's in page format, and the characters are super stylized. I don't know. Maybe I've been in the clear from the jump and I'm making a problem out of nothing.

So, why did I make this topic? Maybe to drive some traffic to my comic. Pretty likely and you can't blame me for trying . But, it's more that I wanted a central place to hear out other people's experience with the Webtoon's ban hammer because I'm still unclear on what it takes to get removed given the content of my comic. Does it have to sexual? Or is cleavage and side boob really all it takes? And sure, I could go look up the terms and conditions for acceptable content, but then I'd have to do that, and I'd rather hear anecdotes from other creators.

There was an artist that posted her stuff on Webtoon but she got one or two of her comics deleted. What followed was an aggravation experience with dealing Webtoons seemly inconsistent standards with nudity. I do know she made a series of comics about the ordeal. Too bad I don't remember the name of the artist.

Have you tried other platforms that cater to things like that? Coolmic might accept new stories not sure. You can also do a patreon and a youtube. Then there's having two versions of the comic (blurring out and directing traffic to other site that allows non-blur). I know I've had a run in and had to change angles in my comics. Example I had a gun pointed at someone then in their mouth then black out screen bang then didn't show the injury to avoid gore they took it down I sent them an email stating how that's not okay when they have a promoted comic showing someone getting sliced in half by an ax and I reposted the same chapter. They didn't take it down again. Posted series just in case.

I got banned for "excessive partial nudity" with attached screenshots of my MC's cleavage. I'd say leave it up as long as possible, but be prepared for them to take action. I was given the option to censor and have them unban me later, so it wasn't like a 'banned forever' type of thing.

I don't make salacious content, my comic is generally all ages and I also post it here on Tapas. I personally don't think it's worth it to censor cleavage if it's not in a sexual context.

I probably will, but if it get banned, I'll likely just leave the platform. I feel like censoring would be admitting what I'm drawing is "inappropriate" when that's really not the case.

Yep, that's pretty much exactly what I did...after I made an entire petty parody comic to get myself unbanned lol

Yeah, I get that. I'm just saying so you have at least one platform that it is still available on to direct traffic and not lose momentum.

I've had around 15 pages removed by Webtoons over the past few years because of partial nudity, but have had the pages restored after emailing back and forth with Webtoons and them approving a censored version. Here's an example of what I had initially that they deemed inappropriate and then the fix I did to have it restored.

At the time the pages were flagged, I'm pretty sure that it was readers that were flagging the pages as opposed to Webtoons themselves going through my pages. This has been my experience with them and I haven't had pages taken down in a while.

I haven't received the ban hammer, but I find it very annoying that there are no notifications for comments.

AppleBan - apple decides your content is 'beyond the limit'. It is simply hidden. No notification. If you can see your chapters on a Personal Computer webbrowser, then it might be appleban.

WebToon Ban - your content is flagged or reported. They send a notification. You can ask which panel has the problem, and they are likely to tell you.

I'm not convinced WEBTOON takes action on anything 'borderline' unless someone actually reports a page; it's pretty unlikely the mods will come across your work on their own unless you're promoting the bajeebas out of it, and using all the right #'s and @'s on Twitter and Instagram. Or it blows up and regularly cracks into the CANVAS Top 30 lists.

Your characters are also so bright and stylised, you can probably get away with their cleavage outfits. (Which look amazing, by the way! Great character design.)

You'd be able to get around it with minimal design change by adding a skin-tight bodysuit under the dress fabric, and removing some of the lines defining the cleavage. But I can totally see why you'd rather not bother.

Maybe speak with @carloswebcomic? His comic, My Pet Succubus, is actually ecchi, that's what the comedy of it hinges on. I was really surprised to see that most of its episodes are on WEBTOON. It also has a big readership, enough that I'd be enormously surprised if the mods weren't aware of it. He'll likely have some valuable experience navigating this line.

And i lack the energy and the time to "fight" for it, censor most of parts, whatever. As i explained in another post

As someone who makes funny comics nsfw borderline, Tapas is the go for me. They deleted a chapter where some breasts were showing (nipples were not even drawn), i don't have the time/energy to censor every single patch of skin in panels, or worry about if a chapter gets censored. In Tapas, if there's something sexual i just add the mature label and be done with it. Here in Spain there were magazines in the 70s and 80s with covers and content you'd be sent to jail nowadays. Webtoon censorship policy is logical due the mobile apps, but it kills lot of content, even borderline.

@amilcardraws Sorry to hear that. It's totally understandable to not be in the mood to entertain chapters being banned. It sounds really stressful and annoying.

@sushy00 I generally prefer Tapas as well, but Webtoons is an platform with a big audience.

Haha, it does baffle me what they censor and what they don't. I've seen comics where people reported had like...I dunno, 8 subs? And somehow their side boob got reported? Even though it wasn't sexual at all?

So I dunno if there's some sort of robot they got that senses if you drew a boob and notifies a human being to check it, (which is pretty common on art sites) but considering your stuff is so stylized, maybe it can't ever trigger a boob bot?

Yeah, I've had sone run-ins with Webtoon and made sure to drill them on the reasoning behind the removal of pages.
I'm not an expert, but I think I have some idea of what they are looking for.
I'll be happy to provide help with this if anyone needs it.

Yeah... I'm pretty worried about this topic as well. I originally planned on making it a NSFW comic just for the website. But ended up toning it down and trying out webtoon. So far no issues. It's only been over like a month and a half tho. For reference here are some panels from my comic. I feel like I'm not just pushing the boundaries but rubbing myself all over them.

If it gets banned I'll be sad. But It has it's own website, so I guess its not the end of the world.Having a back up plan is probably a good idea if you actually worried.
