Webtoon spotlight?

Does anyone know how the webtoons spotlight works? Is it hand selected? Does it only happen after a certain number of episodes or should it happen after just one? How long does it last usually, and do you have to create an icon for their spotlight, or do they just do it and it's a surprise to even you?

Well, to say from experience, I was chosen for the "Specials/Unique" Sections for the app (which shows up as the intro to the Canvas section on desktop). As to why I was picked, I still don't know (like, Webtoons probably knows, but I personally don't have that answer).

Anyhoo, my promotion lasted a week, which was a nice promotion I'll say. Bumped me up to 2k subs and gave me a bit more activity. Though, I will say that before I was picked, I was also posting on Webtoons for a few months with another comic.

The number of episodes doesn't seem relevant -- they picked me when I was around 5-6 episodes, but someone else along with me had only 3, and another had more than 10. For my experience, they just use the icon I was already using for my comic.

Though again -- I don't think it's entirely random. I've seen a lot of others picked that I know from here, and they (just like me) have been posting for a while, might have a few works under their belts, and are consistent.

Thanks for that info. So it just comes out of nowhere on our side. How do you end up in special unique section? Also random?

It’s not exactly random. There are webtoon editors scouring through comics and picking out the stuff they like or think will do well and they pick who to spotlight and feature.

It has nothing to do with numbers or how long you’ve been posting or anything.

Banner
- I was contacted thru my webtoons email for assets and they chose from those and put it together. I had no clue when it was going up, I think it was about half a month or more later though. I also didn't know which assets they decided to use or see a preview of the banner before it went up, which was kind of exciting, but just some info if people didnt know.

Spotlight
- No clue how I was selected, and didn't choose the thumbnail unfortunately. Seems they select one by using a panel from your recent update.

Life is full of drama
- No clue why ive been selected a few times, sometimes I hadn't even uploaded recently. But im a drama genre so thats obviously why I'd be in that rotation catagory.

Fresh picks
- I had been a handful of episodes in, in a month or so when I was selected for this one. (In my original version before a reboot) My stats where doing surprisingly well before this first promo, so idk if that first good climb in stats helped me get selected based on an algorithm or if it was hand selected

Overall I'm thankful ive been promoted across the different sections, but I still have no clue how webtoons goes about selecting them

Rising stars are new webtoons that does exceptionally well, while fresh picks are probably similar to rising stars but also deemed to have the most potential by webtoon staffs that they usually end up heavily promoted for a long time.

I think the "specials" sections is the only category that's randomly chosen by algorithm since it changes each week, usually there's around 10 webtoons that you can see on the main page of website, which then goes through selection by the staffs to appear at the "specials" section on mobile app (usually down to 7 webtoons). The other categories are most probably staff picked. I've also seen a webtoon got promoted with just one update so it's possible.

These are just personal guesses, and I think that how well you do at the first few updates play an important role, so if you had built an audience from older comics somewhere be sure to tell the readers to check the new comic, and then try to update a few more times in a month to have better chance to be promoted.

Yeah we're trying to bring the audience to us where we can, unfortunately there aren't many areas we are in to help south that, but we're on the hunt!

I've been picked for reccomendation twice, and I think it's definitely the staff hand picking things they think will show promise. But the things that are chosen are usually so different from each other that it's not really that they are looking for something specific... they need to appeal to a wide public after all, so I don't know what is their metric for reccomendations, other than good quality. That's one constant in every Webtoon spotlight reccomendation.

A reccomendation lasts for a week, and it really does boost your sub count.

Mine is on staff picks now. I dunno how it works lol. I also got 'featured' by tapas once. Still doesn't know how both of these sites choose which webcomics they will 'feature'.

I think it's a good thing they keep a good secret how they select series to give spotlight. Because if not, people will be flocking in and exploiting their method and bam! bots, automation,
'like race" appeared just like instagram/facebook/youtube.

I'm pretty sure some categories are algorithm based tho I'm not entirely sure how it works. But for example the "bingeworthy" section on the mobile app seems to randomly cycle thru series with 70+ updates, and I think have ad rev unlocked? I could be wrong on the exact number and the ad rev bit, but I think I've noticed that trend.

I also often see series that make the top 30 lists being featured. So it helps if you're making those lists.

I have a question, I'm currently on the desktop intro section, but I don't appear on the list of specials, but the other webtoons that appear on the desktop section do appear on the specials, so is there something wrong? Or my turn for my webtoon to be showed on the app is not yet but another day off he week???
