Well I don't know if webcomics can be easily described considering you have all the world to take advantage as to how you express yourself in a condensed amount of panels, but I can at lease tell you my method behind how I make comics the way they are, and what I consider the meaning of the whole background.
First, unlike many others, I don't have a storyboard process, I have ideas that are expressed through what comes after another. It is a bad practice, but honestly I think as long as I have ideas, I can continue like this. Some are good, most are adequate, maybe even more bad, or it's just me having low confidence in myself, which is most likely the case.
Anyways, I draw what I think rather than what's planned out. Then from there, I slowly draw based on inspiration, most of it coming from what I listen to, read, watch and etc. I don't intend on ripping off but I do use ideas based off certain references and it goes opposite from what the norm is in context.
Then the hard part comes... what DO I consider draws away from the source material? What MAKES it original? What expresses something as unique rather than copying everyone else? What does it mean to create?
That's where the spontaneity clicks. I draw what I believe stands out. It may be something lame. It may be something mundane. Or it could be one of the greatest things you can believe in, and somehow you review it and find out that your efforts go into something subpar.
Webcomics, despite being hard to make on a regular basis, means to me in expressing whatever you want with almost no filter of the forced joke of the day that you don't laugh at in a newspaper either from the perspective of a common child who doesn't understand the punchline or a bored adult who just acknowledges that the joke is there.
What it really is to me is the chance of showing that you have a concept people maybe interested to follow, or a failure that you have to fix by continuing your efforts into pleasing not only the reader, but your self-worth that you can be creative.
I hope this helps and makes sense.
