Webtoons Sub Algorithm?

i realize the topic name doesn’t rly make sense but i wouldn’t know how to name it otherwise lol

so! i’ve been noticing a really weird rise in subscriber count lately, but honestly i just really can’t say why.
recently i get 500-1k new subbers per week where previously I’d get maybe.. 30-100 at best?
nothing changed in terms of uploading times and frequency (if anything it went down a little as i used to do more bonus updates) and the comic has a fair amount of pages that i wouldn’t think 10 or so more would make that much of a difference.
i did spot myself on the ‘today's hot series’ once but that doesn’t rly explain how/why i got there lol

anyway! i was wondering if there was some kind of algorithm that puts you longer or more prominently in the spotlight somehow as you gain more subs? i’m just rly curious about this seriously huge change

Something like this happened to my comic as well. Of the last 3 weeks, I've been featured on the canvas page for 2 of them and gained a significant increase in subs. Not sure how Webtoons determines what to put up, but it seems like they rotate series that are doing well in the canvas section.

I guess just keep being consistent, and let webtoons promote you when they want hahaha.

i did get promoted before (on the 'specials' whatever that means lol) but the thing is i checked and i didnt get promoted this time so its like? so confusing to me Lol

i did do some more digging after posting this thread and figured my comic is on the first page of the 'supernatural' genre by popularity and the 5th of 'comedy' so that might be a factor somehow like if people are coming in from there?

Yeah, if you are 5th in comedy, that probably gets you a lot of views. I believe that's one of the more popular genres on webtoons.

Yeah, I love that so many people want to read what I've created. Still working on finding an audience on Tapas as well.

I recall someone saying that july and august are slow months for comics, so maybe you're seeing an uptick from it being so close to september?

could be, though i’ve been uploading for about a year now so it might be more of a mix of things lol

If you are on the first page of supernatural, you might have gotten into the suggested list of supernatural series. It is a short list of "comics you might like" that appears after you read the last page of any comic. A soon as we got high enough in horror and thriller categories and got onto their lists, we started steadily gain subs every day. But 1000+ in a week, that sounds strange without any promotion going on.

Hi!

I recently attended a convention and had the opportunity to speak with the head of Canvas at Webtoon. She explained to me the process of which comics are chosen to get showcased on the main canvas page recommended titles section and on the app's front page where it has Staff Picks, Rising Star, Specials etc..

She told me that when a Canvas series does well enough (like has a pretty consistent posting schedule and a fair amount of engagement) that series will be put into a pool for either that week or month - however frequently they cycle those spots out.
And from that pool she and a team personally handpicks which Canvas comics get put into any of those spotlights. So there is technically an algorithm that determines what comics get into the pool, but then they are chosen by a person every cycle to be showcased in those slots.

Engagement is not great for me on Webtoons because my sub rate is super low each week, so I guess I'm not ever gonna get picked. Hell, for all I know my comic might be too offensive/problematic even.
