I'm Malaysian Chinese... I don't even know what my mother tongue should be. I'm part Hakka, Teo Chew and Peranakan Chinese (aka. Baba Nyonya). My parents can speak Hakka and Cantonese and my dad can speak Mandarin, but they never taught me and my siblings any of that so wtf, lol.

So the only languages I know are English, Malay and Japanese. But at this point, my Japanese is much better than my Malay because I hardly speak it (shit, there were times when I accidentally spoke Japanese instead of Malay to Malaysians and Indonesians whenever I visited home.)

@UltHamBro Yeah, basic understanding is a funny thing. Everyone in Scandinavia seems to understand Swedish pretty well, while the Swedes are standing in the middle going "Er, what?". XD Comes with being an old imperial power that forced everyone else to learn OUR language, and never bothered learning anyone else's.

Oh, that's changing! It might have been that way before, that they had to learn Swedish, but they don't anymore. Met a girl from Denmark and we couldn't understand each other at all, so we tried for a couple sentences every once in a while but switched back to English pretty fast because we had to speak so slowly to understad each other

Every time I go to France to ski I try to teach the skiing instructor the phrase: "Kötta på!" [Shut-a-pô] because it sort of sounds French and it means "Go fast!" sort of. Because they always want us to go faster

My native language is French, I did most of my education in it. I began to really learn to speak English properly while I was living in India for years, then I moved to Canada where I use both languages in my everyday life .

Was born and raised on the French side of Canada, spent most of my summers on the English side of Canada, and grew up happily bilingual : )
