...See, it's starting already: I don't know what either of those things mean. ._.
Sigh...one of these days I'll be able to talk shop with all the other smart people...but until then, learning is part of the fun, eh?
I'm looking up the holographic principle rn, but I don't know if I'm understanding it right because I don't see what its significant implications are (besides being a solution for the black hole paradox...apparently in my brain that's not important enough).
It just seems a little mundane by string theory standards...like it's not so much a mind-blowing solution as it is something the QCD camp could have thought of if they weren't so focused on their little information blob collections. ^^; I dunno.
This is where I'm at, currently (re: proposed solutions to the paradox)...never let it be said that physics isn't hilarious:
What is it exactly that you want me to do? Apologize? I'm sorry, I really am.
Did I even mention that not one of you care about your legacies? I didn't, I don't know where you think I did. I said not a lot, I didn't say no one else did.
I just shared what I was thinking of and feeling at the time. I shared the comic for context. What is it you want from me? Do you want me to delete the other post too? I can do that, will that make you happy?
EDIT: Yeah, I'm deleting the first post now. Not in an attempt to avoid responsibility, but because I didn't post it with the intention of pissing other people off or coming across as some asshole. Sorry if I did.
I wasn't gonna get involved in this, but seeing as it's apparently snowballing into a misunderstanding: I think the problem was that your initial post looked a LOT like a blatant advertisement for your comic. And people find that in poor taste in a thread that's just for fun discussion.
It's not really a big deal, I guess (I just ignored it) but to many it looks kind of shameless and tone deaf, and I think that's where it might be considered offensive. Do with this info what you will.
Video essays on the Fermi Paradox. I love it. Where are the aliens? Where are they? It doesn't make sense. Also just aliens in general. Not so much in a "they're out there and abducting us and it's a government cover up" way but a "what would the theoretical intelligent life forms on a marine planet be like" way (the answer is octopi btw they would be terrifyingly giant intelligent octopi).
Oh, I don't know if it has significant implications (and gee I am absolutely not an expert I took a class or two ten years ago but just think it's fun)! It's cool to me because it links thermodynamics and relativity, which don't often get talked about together. I thought of it because the compression of information on the 2D plane of the black hole has some parallels to the compression of information in string theory (I think - don't quote me!!!).
Collections? I don't collect anything, but still somehow have a lot of broken or working mobile devices, USB flash devices, a lot of cables. My unusual interest are a lot of things from IT (ofc, because I'm programmer).
But I want to start collection of tails and fluffy ears *kinky* (when I will live on my own).
I hope no one is mad at you, it's not like what you did was ill-intended. I get you want to spread the word about your comic. You're passionate about it and want to use the threads to promote it. But as people often say "there's a time and place for everything." There are threads for promoting your terrific comic. This just happens not to be the place since everyone is having a good ole chat. You can chat about things IN you comic if it pertains to the discussion, but offering a link and promoting it might rub people the wrong way when they're just trying to relax and enjoy discussing things. It's kind of similar when people get bothered by ads when they're on YouTube. It comes out of the blue and breaks the flow of their mood that was building up with whatever they were watching or listening to. I hope you get subscribers and also hope you're a bit more mindful in the future too ^^ Best luck wishes and much love :3
Crafting. I know that doesn't sound unusual but whenever someone needs something off the wall made they come to me to do it. I turned my entire office space into Hogwarts one Halloween and another year a campground just using craft paper and other donated supplies. (We won best group costume Halloween both years).
My dad is also a maker so often our design ideas jive really well together. My mom loves our father/daughter superpower especially when she gets in those moods to completely redo the house.
That's so cool. I love people who are able to craft and decorate for special occasions because it just makes me smile. Spaces and things can be transformed into something new and have a totally different feel. It's just so awesome to see passionate people going above and beyond. It's inspiring! When you think you've seen it all, you find people doing incredible creations that just make you wonder how much time, materials, and patience was spent to make it. People can surprise you. And with all these unusual interests, it's so interesting discovering things I didn't know even existed before! Humans can do almost anything and everything. It's amazing.
Well, I can't say that my interests are too unusual. But I have a kind of weird taste for cars, basically, I don't need at all those cool and awesome sports cars like Porsche (if it's not 924) or Ferrari (except Testarossa, and only because of Miami Vice), but some Soviet-block old school stuff like Lada 2101-2107 or East Germany Wartburg or Trabant can make me hyped, or all those blocky US sedans, era mostly considered as a downfall of US cars, but anyway they're all my favorites, so sad that it's almost impossible to get any of those hare where I live.
Used to have an interest in exploring the land where I lived, map-making, and looking for edible plants to gather and eat purely for the fun of it. Also kept a journal detailing every new plant and animal species I came across, but then I moved closer to the city and that sadly killed the budding hobby. :'I
Nowadays, the only unusual interest I can think of at the top of my head is maybe my music tastes. Not that what I listen to is especially crazy or niche, but that I listen to such a wide range of stuff and genres. I'll listen to jazz, hiphop, pop, country, electronic, lofi, opera, rock, metal, psychedelic trance, citypop, and reggae in one sitting, in a bunch of different languages from different decades.
I like to be surprised by what my randomized playlists throw at me next, and sometimes make a game of it by challenging myself to see how long I can listen to music without having any one language (or other category) come up more than once in the list. I strongly associate songs with memories and feelings and like to imagine a different dreamscape or story scenario for each song.
Sometimes music is a background thing, but can often be a pastime in-and-of itself for me.
Might not be such an unusual thing to the creators I interact with over the internet, but among my irl family and acquaintances it's something I've resolved to keep to myself after being called weird one too many times.
- Splitting paper in half
- Anti-ligature architecture
- Doing a no-home run in Outside
- Oh, oh, also, one of my favourite pastimes in high school was to enter Chinese/English words/phrases into Google Translate and laugh at the English/Chinese translation it gives XD
I am strangely into old Americana music from 100+ years ago and I like reading up history of where folk songs and children school songs come from. And I love finding YouTube vids of old recording for songs that seem almost lost to time.
I also tend to sometime get obsessed with random things and fall down strange rabbitholes. Like I got sort of curious about Bazooka Joe comics and went through and read all of them from each decade. They are so weird.
I also tend to fall down rabbitholes about medical conditions. I guess I most read up on skin conditions, mental illness, and developmental disorders. Yeah, I am a weirdo who will look up skin rashes...I don't know why.
I'm absolutely fascinated by color (like, the history of colors and color theory and such), poisons (especially poisonous plants) and, appropriately, poisonous colors. I've read every book I can get my hands on about both topics, and have seriously considered writing my own book about poisonous colors.
I don;t consider my interests as unusual (unless of course watching documentaries on serial killers and asylums is unusual at this day and age) but! My wife collects bus and train tickets for over 10 years now! She sees a ticket laying around? She grabs it, puts it in her collection box and every six month she counts them, making notes on the serial numbers etc...
