What do people hate about your comic?

I haven't gotten any hate (yet) but my comics still pretty young. 😅
I do hate on my own comic a lot, but in private, y'know the proper way too, lol. ;w;

No one's commented any criticism yet, but I'd imagine many people wouldn't like the art style, others may be turned off by the relatively slow exposition. Eventually, people may be turned off by the multiple POV switches.

• sarcastic comments on the lack of ability in my backdrops. [This was an older one when I was first starting on tapastic but man did it STING and stick around]
• my updates are too short and that I'll be lost in the sea of other comics. [almost a quote from someone on webtoons. I'm too lazy to track down the full statement]
• characters are annoying
• "Anthros are outdated" on my Ark comic.
• Writing is too fast paced and annoying.
• character designs are weird [for Ark]
• updates are too irregular [though that one I can understand the frustration of]

I hope I'm not jinxing myself here, but I haven't gotten any hate yet. In terms of constructive criticism, however, I've been told that:

• some of my pages are too wordy (fair)
• the beginning is too slow (also fair, but I think it won't seem slow in hindsight. They're breadcrumbs! it's meant to be slowish at first!)
• some art stuff, like I draw hands too small? (usually they add that it's improved since the beginning, though, so yay?)

I also had a reader once who admitted to skipping the first 2 chapters and then was confused about the character's motivations. but they really liked the story anyway, so I guess all's well that ends well?

I don't have much to say really, but I just got all excited that you are Korean! I kept trying to find other Korean's on this site. sorry for the off topic part.

My portrayal of Asians is offensive (this one baffles me because I'm Korean, and actual Korean readers did NOT have problems when I was publishing it on a Korean site)

I don't think I've ever seen anyone say something like that before. then again I've probable not been around much to see it. that's really strange, I don't really have a problem with how someone is portrayed in a comic even if they are Asain. that has to be a bit odd. O.o

I think Characters are all meant to have different personalities and styles.

The main character's broken speech (due to not being fluent in the language) is really annoying

I think I can see that, I've had a character that spoke so broken, or had the worst accent, that it was really hard to try and write how he speaks that I had to actually translate it below the actual text.

so, I don't think I've gotten much lately, but I have received a few hate throughout my comic drawing life:

• Crossdressing/girly boy. As much as I don't think anyone really gets upset now, but when i first started I actually got a lot of hate about the fact that I never labeled it BL or gave a warning that the main character was not a girl.
• My art style is too cute for the type of comic I draw. I got a lot of this because my comics weren't very cute, and or sweet.

I don't seem to get that anymore, but those were my big 2

Sticking solely to the comments of outright dislike---- XD
Been told, there's no action, so it's boring. And, that one of the main characters' motives doesn't make sense. The storytelling style is too confusing. One person told me they hate the prologues. XD (So be it. I have to do it my way.)

Honestly, I've also been told nothing about my comic... long stretches of it, which depending on where it's coming from (i.e. friends, family, loved ones) sometimes feels like the biggest negative criticism. And I think that's worth mentioning, just because I doubt I'm the only one who experiences this.

And right now, I wish I had some kind of positive something to say in response to this particular reaction. Not sure that I do yet, but I think when I write/draw simply to PLEASE myself, (instead of stressing out with standards of perfection) I feel more at peace. Even when there are no responses from those sources.

Because I know they'll come in time. MUWAHAHAHAHAHA.

Hate is definitely a strong word. I haven't had anyone smack-talking my comic yet, and I really hope that I don't experience that. I have had a few people unsubscribe though, but they never said why. I haven't really asked for criticism either, but I think if there's anything that people could dislike, it's that my story may not move fast enough for their tastes, it doesn't get right to the point immediately (I mean, there is a lot of bits that relate to the overall story, but it's not like the main events that define the whole story happen right away), and the fact that my story is absolutely ridiculous in many ways, which readers looking for serious stories are not going to gravitate towards. My comic is quite over-the-top, but I've come to realize that it's all a matter of preference, and I can't please everybody on that account.

Well, if you're still following this thread I haven't heard it explicitly but I have this keen sense telling me that my readers think the plot is dragging too long. I mean I agree with them....

For Wild Cards I've heard that the story may be a bit too much. Lines are too thick. Typical Shounen style story with no real hook.

The first chapter of my comic got a slightly salty (bun fun!) review from a fellow Swedish comic creator. They were basically disappointed that there were too much driving a truck in a comic named SPEJS (if you pronounce it in Swedish, you'd pronounce it like "space"), they wanted more action in space, I reckon ^^;
They were also saying there was a lack of backgrounds and too many talking heads.

But I think that's the only "negative" critique I've gotten this far =)

For my comic Lacrim some people have said my work has an alright idea, but it's like it's half-finished so it's confusing as well as other comments about how my style wasn't clean enough. But I take it all on as constructive criticism so it doesn't bother me.

I've had some people respond to how my comic HOTWAB portrays over exaggerated anatomy, one guy wrote an epic forum post about how my comic was aimed at 'heterosexual men' but I drew guys junk to big. I think some people are going in to my comic with the perspective of it following a traditional American feel, however my comic is based in Europe and we're a little more liberal I guess.

I'm a lot older than a portion of the webcomic scene and I'm now bypassing the Steven Universe/Manga generation. My influences were more Masters of the Universe and X-Men, so I think while people don't hate that, it's a big factor in why people would access my comic.

Haven't really received hate for it directly, but when my girlfriend shown one of her friends my comics, that friend of hers lashed at it all because he didn't like the style, and I was informed of the reaction.

I don't even have the time or patience usually to make it all fancy and detailed and non manga-ish.

As for hate among my readers, my comics haven't received any that I'm aware of.

I tried to put all these subtle hints about backstory and character motivations into the story, only to find that people were not only missing them entirely , but coming up with their own head cannons that were counter to mine.

THIS! I get this a lot. And they convince themselves and won't listen to what's actually being said!

I have had a few fair 'bad' things happen and people REALLY want the two mains to hit it off when they met, they did not. People despaired to no end! From laments to projecting THEY wouldnt do that, I had a handful of people actually go 'huh this might actually work out better than them instantly connecting'

as for the storytelling clarity issue, wow. right. I have comments saying I DONT GET IT when i feel ive been handholding and other times a reader accurately predict an entire chapter from an illustration and other readers will crack my own alphabet in hours of published pages. so .... i just dunno man, i dunno

Hate is not something we've really gotten (quite yet), but some of the stuff my team and I have gotten:

• We're telling a story of a black/multi-ethnic woman, and none of us are black or multi-ethnic. I think this concern is kind of fair from my perspective, as myself and my hubby are the-sun-reflecting-off-our-skin-will-blind-you white, and our creative partner is Asian. It's easy to see us and be suspicious of our intentions, in fact we kind of expect it. My team works to do our due diligence, research, talk to folks and spend a lot of time listening, especially when it makes us uncomfortable. The good news is we've had more people commend us for our narrative/character honesty and 'getting it right' than for giving us crap about not being the race of the main character in our story.
• Our text bubbles. In the past we had them colorful and semi-transparent but it made it hard for folks to read, and bubbles got confusing. Our first few chapters are a damn mess because none of us had any real understanding of text bubble rules outside of the very basics. Thankfully we've REALLY improved since then!
• Our posting schedule. Folks get REALLY sadfaced that we can't post more than one page a week, but our pages are seriously work intensive. Each one takes about 75 hours between three people. The buffer page struggle is real and until we're in a more comfortable spot there, we can only post once a week. Sometimes our readers get a treat with a double page post that features a splash on one end. Speaking of posting schedules...
• That our page release schedule drags the story out too long. Readers say we have great pacing when you can read it all at once, but the inevitable end comes and then the story just DRAGS in comparison. I think this is a REALLY fair critique, but it's not something we can really help right now. ^_^;;;

Oh yeah, another popular one I got for Raven Wolf was "why is this not porn?" "where is the porn?" "when are they going to fuck?" "Do you have a version with the sex?"

I guess if you draw a comic in an anthro style some people that read have high hope for smut implications or something???? I'm not sure. I never intended for it to be an adult comic, and the story never implies that there is going to be or should be porn/sex, but some people still think there will be or that it's missing???

It was because I had a bunch of unnamed Asian characters acting "mean" by Western standards. The characters were acting very hostile, and then there was a brief scene in which a mother harshly discourages her son when he talks about wanting to become [insert career choice]. But those behaviors are quite normal, or at least understandable, in Korean culture given the situation. So when people say those behaviors are ignorant and/or offensive, that offends ME because they're passing judgment on normal Korean behavior.

I'm not deeply offended or anything, but yeah. I feel like those people are pushing their own ideas of right and wrong, and not respecting that other people/cultures can have different ideas.

I think some of the Tapastic staff are also Korean, BTW XD

Someone has an issue with the fact one of my characters is wearing stockings cuz it was such a drastic skin change between the legs and the rest of her It took like ages to convince this person that these stockings existed
