What Do You Call an Unknown Sexuality?

(I'm kinda afraid of asking but I was curious about this. I'll delete the thread if people get angry about this.)

I know there are different types of genders & sexualities out there but I was wondering what do you call a person who doesn't know their sexuality yet? (I don't think it would be called asexual)

I mean someone who isn't sure if they are straight, gay, bi, or have any other form of sexuality because they haven't form a certain relationship or sexual attraction towards someone.

they'd be questioning usually. because you don't really know what you are yet, so you don't 'have' anything.

I don't believe in the gender spectrum personally. It just makes everything to complicated! honestly I'm not totally against people changing their gender... because you know it their life... although when people start making up random genders and telling me I need to believe in this idea of a gender spectrum or else I'm not PC...well that's where I draw the line.

I don't know any specific label for it, and I don't even think it's needed. If anyone ask about your sexual orientation, you can just explain it as it is.

No worries, there is no harm in asking.

The Q in LGBTQ+ stands for "Questioning", the idea being that you are questioning what your sexuality is. The rule of thumb with labels is that you use the one that feels most appropriate/comfortable for you. So if you're looking for a word, questioning is a good one, but don't feel pressured to pick anything or sort anything out. You do what feels right. If you previously assumed you were straight (or gay, bi, etc) but are now questioning it, you could also say "straight but questioning". Whatever works or makes sense!

Questioning, or Gender fluid I think can also apply if it's specifically gender.

I would say questioning, but don't be scared to use a label and change it some other time. Plus your identity can change over time, I know I used to identify as bi, but now I would call myself a lesbian (who also happens to be on the spectrum of asexuality but whatever)

Also maybe just take time to figure out your sexuality, sometimes it just takes some time to think and figure out who you're attracted to, if you're attracted to anyone at all

'Questioning' and 'curious' mostly. You don't really need a label for that kind of thing in the first place. it's as JRHoch and Tired Programmer said, you really shouldn't sweat the whole label thing in the first place.

This was me for a long time and I didn't have a name for it or anything. It was more of a not caring thing. If someone asked me what I was, I'd be like "I don't really know/care, but if I had to pick, I'd say bisexual". I wasn't really in a state of "questioning" but having no interest in exploring it and it didn't matter much to me anyway because I'm in a committed relationship.

So you might want to consider if your character is in a state of questioning or if there in a place of acceptance that they don't know.

I know what you mean, but I think it's important to note that some people might not want to have sex for reasons unrelated to their sexuality. I think "Who do you find attractive?" is a better way to put it. (but I still love the schrodinger reference)

I just figure such a person could be asexual and not ready to define themselves that way, or maybe they've had experiences that make them feel unsure on how to move forward. But it is important to note that one does not need to date or sleep with someone to know their sexuality.

absolutely not asexual is a sexuality in itself and in no way a term to describe anyone unsure of their sexuality

the most common term for this would be “questioning”! (some even say that’s what the Q stands for)
