What do you feel when the same people who like your comics, also like comics which you think is rubbish?

So there is some happy likers that just likes stuff all over without reading or care?
I will feel sad if I'm the only one not being liked by one of them happy likers.

Imagine someone saying in a very annoying voice:
"I have subscribers, but they have a poor taste and I feel offended that they group my awesome comic with comics that are obviously trash. Actually I don't know if I even want them, they probably support me because they just pity me."

Sounds ridiculous right?

If I get well what @tired_programmer is saying, the issue is not about accepting other people's taste, but rather what it means about her comic that people who like it AND like some other comics that she think are really bad.

I personally think it means close to nothing in relation to your comic.

There are a lot of possibilities for people to like various qualities of comics, and every reader will have their own explanation.

There may be a few readers who just have low level of expectation and comment favorably on a lot of comics.

There may be a few readers for whom it's very important to support every creator they know, regardless of quality (if these ones comment in a constructive way, even if it's all positive, they are actually valuable commenters).

There may be a few who genuinely care about these works that you find bad, because they see in it something you can't see. I'm sure you can think of a few works that are unpopular and not that great overall, but that you feel a special connection to for a very obscure reason, that is unlikely to be shared by many).

There may be a few who are simply very early in their voyage through comics. Either young people with not fully developed tastes and standards, or simply people new to webcomics. I know my tastes evolved (and refined) immensely in the first few months after starting reading webcomics, and I was 37! Imagine a 14 years old...

Plenty other reasons I can't think of, I'm sure.

I'll be the first to admit that my personal taste in comics isn't the most...refined, I guess. I do like some comics that are filled with nothing but fanservice and I absolutely love comics that get me invested in its world with all its intricacies and creativity,or the conflicts that happen within those worlds they've created. My comments may not hold much value in most readers/artists eyes, but I see nothing wrong in spreading positivity to artists who may be struggling with their attitude towards their work.

There is a difference, I think, between not liking at all and liking only certain aspects of it. I don't think it's likely that a lot of people who don't like at all keep commenting just to make you happy. It may happen, but I can't really see that happening on the long term.
And then we are back to the same problem: we like the negative critique more than not knowing, because the negative critique is helpful. But people are always worried about giving any, and I can understand. So yes, the feedback you get is probably skewed toward too positive compared to the actual thoughts of your readers.. But everyone has the same problem (some like it like that, some don't).

I think that it doesn't matter at all what my readers' tastes are. This is just bc tastes are complex and deeply personal.

Humans are multi-faceted. They can have a thing for comics that are well-developed and complex and intricate, while still having a separate interest in the occasional "schlocky" or "simplistic" or even "less objectively good" works. We can like things for being objectively good, but something can also be bad from a subjective standpoint and still be enjoyable for us personally.

For example, I prefer Street Fighter 5 to Street Fighter 4, but objectively 4 is a better game. It's just that the 4th game isn't accessible to me bc of my visual processing disability. It's a subjective aspect of taste. I know it's not as good, but I prefer it for subjective reasons.

I wouldn't judge someone based on what comics they like, even less the people supporting and spreading my work. They have their reasons for reading what they read and sometimes they might like things that aren't objectively good. It's fine to like something that isn't objectively good.

Also, maybe comparing your own work to others' isn't a good idea. The most important thing is that you're improving, rather than judging others' work against yours constantly.

People have different tastes and all that. And it goes more than just different tastes, sometimes I like different comics based on mood of the day. Some comics I relate to cause of personal experiences in my life that I may not have related to before. Some comics I see potential in the author to grow and I'm looking for that.

Also, sometimes people like their guilty pleasures. Sometimes I can admit that something is complete rubbish, but I still enjoy to consume it for whatever reasons. Kinda like enjoying a B movie for being so bad it's good. Or having a comic that has some really uniquely funny plot holes or completely outlandish scenes that you just enjoy discussing with friends or something.

but also maybe a creator supports another creator due to friendship, but supports you because they genuinely like your stuff. You really don't know. A person can support a handful of creators while ALSO liking the quality and content of other creators, it doesn't mean they support everyone "just cause"

Well, each to their own taste, I suppose. If they like it it was their choice and preferences. What am I to criticize their taste of story?

Absolutely nothing. Taste is something very subjective to be comparable.

I’d just appreciate that they like my comic, and let them enjoy what other things they like as well! Whatever makes them happy

I think you're overthinking things in this case, liking shitty comics doesn't mean you can't like very good comics at the same time. And liking your comics and liking crap comics doesn't mean your comic is crap too, that doesn't mean people lie to you out of politeness.
It's ok to like various levels of comics, no big deal here, take a breath everything is ok ^^

I don't judge my readers by what comics they read or who they sleep with.

That said, my own library is a bit of a jumble. I follow some creators because I think they have raw talent and need nurturing, others I follow because I'm enthusiastic about the art, the writing, or both!

Well, it does make me go a bit UUUUGH, but, then again, I don't seek out their comments in other peoples works, so I don't know what they like in those. Maybe they like the style, or the humor, or a character - I have some questionable tastes too (and follow some stuff I don't enjoy on a scenario level just because I like how an artists handles working with shots and paneling), but because I like some dumb humor, doesn't mean I like it all or can't appreciate more sophisticated works. It's too complicated to judge (and not really necessary), but as long as the reader precieves my comic for what it's worth (not dumbing it down to the bare basics) then I have no problem.

hm, i'd think nothing of it. Like many said, people can have a myriad of interests, and it's none of my concerns.

Although i can see it being a bit of a bummer if my work is lumped with other stuff i might consider average (rubbish is kind of a harsh word lol) which might make me think "so this is where my work stands, huh... : ("

But eh, like i said, it never bothers me. if my work appeals to anyone, that's good enough for me. Try not to let it bother you too much.

But hey I like tons of manga that is certifiable hot garbage. TRASH, The Island of Giant Insects, Mad Chimera World, Crime Zone, Arachnid, Magical Girl Site, Magical Girl Apocalypse, Green Worldz, Cage of Eden, Satanophany, Deathtopia, Magical Girl Spec. Ops Asuka, Pumpkin Night, Bloody Delinquent Chainsaw, Satanister, Big Tits Dragon, SLAVE GO, Dead Tube, DINER, Himenospia, Kings Game (Origins was legit good tho), and pretty much anything classified as survival horror / death game type manga. Not to mention all of Love Death + Robots on NETFLIX. Most of the manga I read are things people hate or complain about but I find fun to indulge in because I ain’t looking for anything deep.

I’m also over here liking My Little Pony, Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse, Steven Universe, Wander over Yonder, and a bunch of other sugar coated shows.

When it comes to reading material I almost always read darker stuff, the MLP comics are the only exception there.

What I’m saying is people have varied tastes. So even if I don’t like other stuff people like, the important thing is they like what I made.
