What do you think about dingly winglies (nudity) in comics?

I don't know why, but this question just poped out in my head. Are you feeling confused when you see genitals in comics? Maybe you feel awkward drawing them? When use it and when not? Is it really necessary to show them? Maybe you censorship them?

I've got no qualms about seeing or drawing them. If the shot calls for it then yeah I'll draw it. I just don't like unnecessary zoom-ins like panty shots that do nothing for the story.

I won't censor it if it's non-sexualized, like just someone bumming around naked after a shower. But while in the act I would definitely censor, just to comply with Tap's rules.

I think it depends on what kind of "rating" you're going for. Like for example, I'm sort of aiming for a "pg-13" feel for City of Blank so any nudity there is is sort of conveniently behind things or just positioned at the right angle. I've only had one page so far where I was showing how the creatures in my comic developed which included drawing breasts and I just sort of drew them in a way that conveniently didn't have any nip nops showing. Not that breasts should really be included in this debate in my opinion, but they kinda fall in the line of trying to keep it "pg-13."
That said, I don't care about having to draw them, but suddenly having a full on dick shot in my particular comic would be very...out of place. For others it's completely fine and wouldn't cause any unnecessary (or irreverent) attention.

It depends on the context of your comic, really. Ex. I read BL comics like Betovering knowing that there's gonna be some diddly-doodly, but if I'm reading a comic that's cutesy and adorable and then BAM there's unexpected nudity, without any warning from the creator whatsoever and no context at all (kinda like when you're watching a movie and there's the obligatory cliche "man and woman kiss in the face of adversity" bull and I'm just like "come on the movie was fine without that" with NOTHING leading up to it whatsoever wow look at me digressing) then it's kind of amateurish to me and is sort of a turn-off (haha no pun intended i'm awful i'm sorry).

So to put it simply, I don't mind nudity in comics as long as it makes sense within the context of the story and isn't just being thrown in there to tailor to an extra group of readers that will probably find it in poor taste anyway.

As to whether or not it's "necessary", basically the same answer. There are of course scenes in which nudity makes more sense, and scenes where they just don't and you can tell the creator is just shoehorning it in. This applies to SO many different situations, but if you feel like you're falling into the latter, then you're doing it wrong.

I only censor nudity if it's absolutely required as a formality of some sort, but as long as I put up a NSFW filter so readers know what to expect and it's not straight up pornography, I don't go that far (you're not gonna find that stuff from me on Tapastic i mean WHAT).

My main rule of thumb - use nudity where scenes can better from it; if scenes are just going to come across as campy or unnecessary with it, then best to stay away, because then it just makes the flow of the story feel awkward IMO and the readers will detect that awkwardness right away.

Seriously though, I'm not so big on nudity or sex scenes in comics (or anything) but won't run for the hills if I see it either.
Probably could never draw it myself outside of anatomy practice....not so much because I'm a prude but because I'm just too ...shy to do that. ^_^;

It really doesn't bother me at all. Kinda goes hand-in-hand with the violence thing in comics, it happens, just like exposed body parts tend to happen. Not a big deal.

If it's a non-sexual context? I don't care at all, really. I've done enough life drawing that naked bodies aren't particularly mysterious or exciting to me. Obviously you should keep your audience in mind, but I don't see the point in avoiding it if that's what the page needs.

For sexual content, it really depends on the specific scene. I'm not especially interested in explicit scenes, and certain things would have me quickly closing the window, but I have no issues with a tastefully done scene where the story requires it.

I have no problem with nudity in comics. It's just someone being naked. It's not a big deal.

I grew up in Sweden watching old classic children's shows from the 70s (though I was born in the 80s) and there are nude people all over those. I'm used to seeing it, in a non-sexual context. So genitals aren't something that bothers me.

Of course, everything depends on context. Is someone getting out of the shower/bath? Then they'll probably be naked. Is someone changing clothes? Then they'll be at least partially naked at some stage. Is it a comic with a romance that calls for a sex-scene? Then they'll probably be naked.

I just think the nudity should be called for and make sense in context. It's pretty obvious when a creator inserts nudity in a comic just for the shock-value, and that bores me so much - like I said, I don't find nudity shocking.

Neither of my comic feature nudity (don't know if Grassblades ever will, but it might at some point), so it's not something I've had to take a stand on yet, but if it DOES happen, it will probably be in such a way that it can be posted on Tapastic without adding awkward censorship bars on the dingly winglies.

Yeah if its necessary to the story or used in humor I think its fine. Being an american it can be a bit more taboo here, but when used in the context of off color humor it can be very effective. Dick jokes will probably always be funny to me.

Drawing naked people eh not sure if I'd be comfortable drawing it outside my room, but if a story needs it I'll do what I have to. Most artists are encouraged to study anatomy at some point so that usually desensitizes people, I'd be more worried at what a passerby would think.

At the moment I don't have any stories that I think would require full on nudity, but I have considered it from time to time for my gag series.

I have no problems with nudity in comics when it's in context. Actually, I have very similar stance as most here.

Living in Finland and doing quite a lot of life drawing has made me quite indifferent to seeing naked bodies. But completely unnecessary fanservice (like wind blowing someones skirt up) even when it doesn't reveal much gets very annoying.

My comic actually has some nudity but I just compose the panels in a way that privates won't be showing. If I'm going to censor them to keep it around pg-13 I might as well make it part of the composition instead of doing awkward bars that are very distracting. And considering it comes from people bathing / swimming it's not even hard. Actually, my next 3 pages will be that swim scene. :'D

First of all, Im gonna use the term tinglie winglies when speaking of genitals, thank you.
Second, i dont really like drawing nude parts and i havent drawn any tinglie winglies. And i probably never will. I just dont feel comfortable drawing the aforementioned tinglie winglies. Still, im aware that there are countless porn artists and im not gonna judge em. If u wanna draw something, draw it. I wont judge, everyones got their preferences right?

Frankly, it depends, if the scene really calls for it, for example, the character is taking a shower, yeah of course, it's ok. There's no problem with it and it's pretty normal, or is changing clothes, or in a hospital, if it's really needed, then go ahead.
But in scenes like Idk, you're reading something and it's all cool AND OH GOD SUDDENLY NUDES like why and how, and I'm meaning when it doesn't make sense or wasn't even needed. You just get like

Scene that are just there to cater to the viewer (almost the entire time for the hetero-male gaze) I just roll my eyes and give it a thumbs down.

There's nothing wrong with nudity or sex. I've drawn nudity, and I have an idea for another comic where some scenes would require nudity and even sex (tbh those latter scenes are mostly a punchline but I digress). I think as long as it's tasteful and necessary for the scene, it's okay? It's a natural part of many people's lives. The issue is when it gets objectified for a certain group of people that dehumanizes--usually--another oppressed group where I draw the line.

Everyone has basically touched on what I was going to say in this topic. Basically if it is done tastefully, then I don't see any problems with it. Don't just throw nudity into a comic for the sake of nudity, unless it serves a purpose. Whether that purpose is for a romantic scene, a mentally scarring scene, or even comedy. As long as there's a reason for it that adds to the story/plot, then by all means, go for it.
