Hey all! I was wondering how you came up with your characters’ names or what inspired them. I remember reading that J.K. Rowling used Latin influences to name her characters to fit the traits they had. I see a lot of unique names on here and I’m always curious to hear how people choose their names!
Also, please share a link to your works and feel free to add a little description so we can check em’ out!
I’ll start (I’m just going to focus on the names from my novel).
I have three main characters: Roenan, Drakke, and Saive.
Roenan and Saive’s names were influenced by my time in Ireland. I always loved the name Roenan for a boy, and his character was the first I came up with (so he got my favorite name). Saive is also derived from the Irish name “Sadhbh”. It’s a generally a girl name but I gave it to a male character. I thought I’d switch it up and make the spelling easier so readers wouldn’t have to guess as much pronunciation.
I’m a sucker for names that can be cut short to show closeness, so “Roe” (my little fish egg lol) and “Sai” are used a lot by the other characters as nicknames.
I took the name Drake from my Great-Gramps because I always thought he had the coolest name. (Also, does anyone remember N64 Waverace? Drake Lake?! Always loved that run.
) Anyway, I added another ‘k’ making Drakke, because he is from a country who’s language uses double consonants often when written out (while Roenan and Saive’s country use more vowels). I can thank my interest in Linguistics for playing around with that. Anyway...
My novel is a BL.
Roenan Farrah (from the country of Jaeda) awakens to a scene of horror in his own home. It's not long before he succumbs to his injuries and is woken up in the hands of an enemy country (Vernajja) during a time of war. As he struggles to understand why he is there and why no one seems to harm him, he befriends an enemy soldier (Drakke Kershenn) and a fellow Jaedan prisoner of war (Saive Oeleen).
(My story is pretty heavy/dark and I usually suggest it for Mature audiences).
