I've had to research the effects of hypothermia for a recent RP of mine... I knew it was deadly, but I didn't know that even if you didn't die, you'd have heart arrhythmia and warming needs to be done slowly as to not shock your body. The more you know!

For me it was early mental health treatments and facilities. Since I based my my novel on the life and works of H.P Lovecraft there had to be an Arkham asylum set in 1922. At first it was like, how could they do that to people but it got more uncomfortable when I realized that with my own blend of mental illness I could have been subjected to these. Yeah my monsters are scary but its nothing compared to having holes drilled into your head, electrocution, neglect, long hours in confinement, and other such horrors.
Made my skin crawl.

I had to search once for some info on how tall a building needs to be for a person to have a life-threatening damage after falling off it. It took me into rather dark places.

There's nowhere that's foolproof! The shoulders have lots of blood and lots of bone, so even if you miss an artery it'll hurt like absolute hell. Not great when the wound is supposed to be for show, just to get a certain group off your scent, and you have to still fly a spaceship.

It's similar everywhere else. A lung is a possibility, but if it gets blood in it, you could drown. Everywhere else has vital organs, and the guts won't kill you immediately, but could do over a few days.

Basically, while there is a chance you'll survive, there's nothing guaranteed to be non-lethal.

So uh, yeah, don't get shot in the torso. Really bad idea, apparently.

You can smash your enemies and then your homies. You can smash everybody, and still have the capability to do some on-the-clock smashing.

As a note, puns about battle and romantic activities abound in my novel. One of the love interests is former cavalry and everybody makes puns about Klaus riding. Just everybody. As they should.

I had to do a lot of research that warranted on steel tables and various torture devices for a few scenes in my story. I loved it though, so not too bad...I think.

I'm just going to put a trigger warning because it involves death and drug abuse.

Summary

I've had to lookup morgue pictures, autopsies, and horrific accidents along with other things like deformed fetuses and such because my comic can get a bit gory at times and tackles some things that can overall be hard to talk about because I wanted to get it right. I also had to look up drug abuse which made me really depressed for a few days, I have been exposed to people that did some heavy drugs as well which makes it easier to write but I honestly wish I wasn't around any of it. I also had to put my memory to the test with all of them because I didn't want to look at these things while drawing.

Besides the usual details on how long specific injuries take to heal or poisons/specific ways to die, I have had to look up some unsavory things such as symptoms & aftereffects of a miscarriage and very disheartening stories about mental healthcare in specific sectors. I think I'm so used to the "writers looking up odd things" (like aaaaalways baby name sites) that I'm not bothered by a lot of odd things, but having to read personal accounts of heartbreaking subjects always does make me a bit sad and uncomfortable to "casually" research.

Once had to look up if phantom pain also applies if you're missing an eye. I don't remember the answer, sorry writers.

Mostly my weird research stuff would concern a therapist than an FBI agent lmaoo. So many times did I need to research how gaslighting works, how anxiety works, etc...

Embalming practices, primarily! Things you never really thought to ask like "what color is embalming fluid?" and "How long does it take for a human corpse to putrefy?"
That, and visible tells of death, like do bruises show up if you whack a dead body? Does a blue/purple color stay if the cause of death is hypothermia? What about if it's via a concussive hit, like a pole to the back of a head? All these weird death questions I had t'get the answers to. Thank god for Ask a Mortician that gave most of these fairly easily.

I looked up quite a bit about "scientists that died due explosion in the space race" for a future character which I'm not sure if I will use at all but it was interesting to learn. I also dived deep in thermodynamics in theory for the magic system of my story.

For a scene where someone's head was cut off, I looked up images of decapitation. For some reason, I expected drawings or renders, but instead got images of actual decapitated heads. It disturbed me enough to call off using anything of such as reference. Probably why it looked unconvincing when I did draw it.

Oh dear... where to begin. Honestly, if the FBI ever searches through my search history, they're going to think I'm some psychopath/ murderer xD

There was one scene in particular that I had to do a bit of searching on what kind of brain trauma leads to death and how to clean up blood stains and what the process was to totally disinfect and destroy DNA evidence... I ended up not even using half the material I've researched and kept it somewhat PG-13

I don't know if I would necessarily call it weird or uncomfortable, but I sure wouldn't let my parents know what I've been looking up. I have actually just recently gotten into omegaverse stories. I found myself intrigued by these and decided that I would write my own story. Even though I have read quite a few novels and comics that take place in an omegaverse, I wanted to research all the different tropes and terms that could be used in an omegaverse. I found a lot of useful information, and now, I've got a story started and planned. I actually plan to start uploading in on May 1st, but I already have it set up and ready for anyone who wants to subscribe and read it when it officially comes out.
