What is your average number of layers, on your finished work?

1 or 2. Iayers. If its just a portrait just 1layer.
You get used to it. But its mostly because I cba to use more.

Usually about 5-10 layers.

• Sketch layer
• lineart layer (including background)
• effects layer (tones and stuffs)
• hair coloring layer (yes, this gets its own layer)
• clothes coloring layer (this also gets its own layer below the hair one lol)
• speech bubbles
• speech bubble "whites" (that goes over the lineart so you can see the text)
• text (sometimes the speech bubbles and text layers get merged, usually happens if I end up having to move them around)

Of course I have a LOT more layers if I'm doing something in color. Base colors, shading, lighting, more effects, etc. . .

I work in Flash so Layiers are a bit odd. lol

for comics, I have 4 layers.
- Text/bubbles
- Gutters
- Panels
- Sketch

The panels are in symbols. When you click into them there are more Layers
- effects
- Character Art
- background

Background can be one layer or if there is a lot of stuff in the background it can get from 2 to 5 or more layers. lol

For just drawing art. I have the line art on three layers.
- Highlights/extra shading
- Shading.
- color
- outer line thickness/shadow.
- sketch

Thats just for a character art. If a background is involved, backgrounds can be an extra 2 to 7 layers. lol

A dozen at MOST. I cut my Photoshop teeth on an old Pentium with 250MB of RAM that would slow down to a crawl whenever I had more than 5-6 layers, so compulsively merging, merging, merging layers as I work became second nature to me.
Too many layers confuse me, if I have some corrections to make, I treat it like an oil painting and repaint right on top of the mistake.

you poor soul O__o I find it hard to work with my computer at times and it's got 4 GB of RAM . . . I can't imagine working on something with only 250 MB, holy jesus how did Photoshop even run lol

Poorly! Ha ha!
Well, the older Photoshop versions (I think this was Photoshop 5.5) had lower requirements than today, of course... but still my PC wasn't terribly good at handling it. At least using HDD swap memory was an option, which I think helped a bit. I remember when Photoshop 7 came out it made a huge difference actually, because it was more optimized.

Depends on the complexity. Usually around 7-8 if it's done correctly. Sometimes more if I need to do tons of detail and colors.

I need a separate layer for each:
Sketch layer
Background (if any)
Lineart
Frame borders
Color
Shading
Speech bubs
Text

Of course, once I start making the full-length comics it'll be all of this times how many frames on a single page.

Ah, I remember when I could finish my comic at around an hour. Now it takes more than two, depending.

I don't really use layers.
I draw and ink everything. I then scan it on the computer and change all the lines to black and white and fix any errors. Then all the art reprinted at 11X17 size and then I paint the whole comic by hand using watercolor paint.

After I paint and rescan, I may use an adjustment layer for some values but that's it.

Hmmm...around 6 layers i use, that might increase with how much dialogues and speech bubbles they are in the page though.

Well over 100 usually, and if there's crowd shots or vehicles then that's at least a good bump up to 200+. Of course, that's just the Ink and paint portion. With compositing we flatten a lot of those layers down, and then add about 50+ more.

For a banner we were making at one point Photoshop just said, "NOPE. Not doing this anymore!" It wouldn't even save the file in normal PSD format (and that was WITH the character art flattened to a single layer, and the background flattened too).

Huh? It didn't save it automatically as psb? Mine does it every time it exceeds the file size without bothering me with it.

About 15 I think, since I merge the most layers I know I won't need single anymore. And that's in PSD

Yeah, pretty sure it was. This was for a banner we were creating for our booth at a local convention. Cool stuff, but very, very large. This thing wasn't done in inches it was measured in feet. x.X

Excluding text I think I usually have between 5-9 layers. With text it'll be about 15 or so. If I'm using alot of effects on a particular page, I'd say my total layers would be close to 20.
