So I decided to give Mulan 2020 a try and... I was watching this movie at home alone, and within the first ten minutes, I think I uttered "How did this movie ever get made?" at least twice.
There is nothing redeeming about this movie even IF you keep the genocide out of the equation. If I, an white person (granted one born in Asia, but I've been in America since I was 7), can tell that the Asian culture depicted in the movie is an inauthentic orientalist fantasy, you, um... you failed. Like, REALLY failed. The special effects I THINK were going for the "90's wuxia movie aesthetic" but it failed at capturing any of the charm and just looked like a high school student's project. The "empowering" message was laughably archaic (how the HELL do you manage to make a story about Mulan be sexist?) and the story beats and the overwhelming racism were straight out of a terrible 90's action movie.
Holy moly, how does one screw up a 200 million dollar movie this bad?
