What People Compare Your Style To vs. What You Reference

I love your style so much! I can definitely see the Bruce Timm influence, which is probably why people say Static since most DC animated kind of takes after the Bruce Timm stylization in some way.

I've never looked into the concept art for Mulan, but if it inspired your fantastic style, I might just have to ^_^

I said in my original post that I could understand why people would compare my work to Adventure Time, but that I did not consider it a personal influence. I have nothing against Adventure Time, I just personally did not feel heavily inspired by it.

As for the artists I listed, I wasn't comparing myself to them, I was saying I was inspired by their work and I feel like it's had an influence on me artistically.

But I have never, at any point, sat down and tried to make my style more like any of these influences. It just sort of happened naturally; I found something I liked, and some aspects of it crept into how I draw things.

That's the way it is for me too! I feel like art style kind of evolves naturally when you draw a lot.

Your style is lovely by the way! I'm not really familiar with the stuff you listed other than Avatar and the french comics, so I can't say much about that, but I think you definitely have a unique style

I don't really see it. When Disney starts making their leading ladies above a size 2, I'll take those comments into consideration, lol

Yeah, there was a big thing on twitter a while ago where a bunch of female illustrators were talking about how they've had their art compared to anime somewhere along the line, and I think it has to do with the face that anime/manga has this more sensitive feel to it than older american animation/comics so when older people see something that's not traditional super hero or looney tunes, they just say "anime" right away.

Also thank you for saying toy could see my influences! I admire Jamie Hewlett a lot, so I'm glad he rubbed off on me a little!

Going off of the anime conversation, it would personally be really foolish of me to say that my work isn't SOMEWHAT inspired by anime and manga, since I grew up on Pokemon, Sailor Moon and other various magical girl manga. It does get bothersome when people directly compare my work to anime; like the cartoon has big eyes and a small mouth and pointy chins, and suddenly "oh is this an anime?" Ugh.

Yeah that might be the reason! I wonder if you show that same art style to Japanese people they would say it is cartoon!

I have yet to be compared to any one, at least no one's told me anything.
But I'll list my top biggest influences for each of my styles.

Cartoony

Really an amalgam of all the cartoons I watched as a kid. What really got me drawing was The Simpsons (yeah my parents let me watch it since I was 5)

Serious

The lovely works of the Hanuka brothers and Est Em.

"Geometric"/Simplified

Natsume Ono and The Secret of Kells.

On a side note, Adventure Time was not the first to do "tube arms", for me, that was Simpsons all the way. Just look at all the non-buff characters (basically everyone besides Duff Man and Rainier Wolfcastle), their limbs are so tubular.

I hear it at least once a day that my art reminds them of Tim Burton which that is fine with me, he is my idol after all.

Oh the concept art for Mulan is just...breathtaking. It's really one of those art books that's worth every penny if you can find it.

depends who you ask.
My most common is people compare me to Disney or just say anime. Had a professor give a spiel on my art and referred to it as 'anime' the entire speech at my graduation exhibit. That...was interesting. However, I do get those rare instances of someone saying it reminds them of Dreamworks' films and that tends to mean more to me. xD

Yeah, I could see the Dream Works comment! Your style is really interesting, I like how varied the face shapes and noses are in the sample you posted

I've got two main "styles", you can mostly check the difference thanks of the colorisation. At least taht's what people say, i'm jsut drawing the same way, it's just the colors which change!

Influences- mostly deviantart artists I follow and videogames, japanese art, Ghibli and Disney
What people say- general rpg nihon gamu + "your subtle touch" + Disney sometimes

Influence- Less big colorisation, a friend of mine + some advertising with simple style
What people say- nihon animu + simple style you see everywhere on blogs those times

I guess they can see pretty good things in the end. I think someone even related my love to Turner's paintings while looking at my lights in drawings.
