Don't you love how hating on comic sans is like the running joke of the graphic design world? Totally agree though, most basic fonts are no bueno for comics either

I like less most of digitally drawn comics. I prefer traditional art and most of digital art looks all the same to me. Probably because of the brushes and the strokes that make everything look all similar. They don't look "natural". I'll always prefer a comic done on paper with its flaws than a comic done digitally all perfect looking, with its bright white and perfect curves and lines.
This doesn't mean I don't look at them or read them, of course. Everyone choose the tools they feel more comfortable with, if the story is good I'll keep reading it.

But the thing I really don't like the misuse of Google Sketchup models for vehicles and/or backgrounds. I know that they are one of the most difficult things to draw and a help from internet is always useful, but there are comics that are full of Sketchup models. There are artists that draw only with Sketchup and Poser help, otherwise they can't even move a pen on a paper (or on a tablet).

im a marvel buff and i honestly hate traditional mainstream comic art. its awful and should be left in the 00s. with the rise in indie comics, smaller publishers, and webcomics, comic art in the mainstream is really revolutionising recently and im so relieved. if i ever have to see another generic boob-suction too-much-black-lines anatomy-fail comic again, itll be too soon.

We're generally a pretty positive bunch, but do keep in mind that this is a threaded specifcally dedicated to talking about stuff we don't enjoy.

Also, art is subjective. That's what it's for. Nothing is going to appeal to everyone, and that's okay. There are certain art styles that I don't like at all, but that doesn't mean that you would be wrong for liking them. It just means we enjoy different things. As evidenced by my first post in this thread, I don't enjoy a lot of the art styles that appear in mainstream superhero comics - because I didn't grow up reading them. They look weird to me. Does that mean they suck? No, no it doesn't, necessarily.

It's just means I'm the kind of person who looks at a Captain America-comic and wishes I was reading Stop Looking at All Those Stars.

I am usually willing to give anything a try. Some art styles I find myself needing to warm up to instead of instantaneously liking. The only time I was really turned off by an art style was the first Sandman trade. I really disliked the hard black lines with bright colors effect. I don't know why but it really bothered me at the time.

But yeah, I really only don't like 'styles' that are muddy or same-y. What I mean by that is I have a friend who writes a comic where it is almost impossible to tell the difference between the characters because they are all drawn exactly the same way. Same facial structures, same features, size, hair styles. It gets really muddy and hard to read.

But I am pretty opened minded about art in general. I think everything can have something aesthetically pleasing about it.

Oh, I thought of another thing.

When a style is more cartoony (which isn't an issue in itself) but the characters are depicted in sexual situations either with themselves or with other people. This is specifically directed towards styles where the people are all cartoon cute and kid-friendly (not edgy adult cartoony like Adult Swim shows). I suppose it's a disconnect with me since I usually imagine that style as "for kids" and I don't think kids should be exposed to sex. Sex ed is fine (and discussion about how to do it safely is good), but showing characters actually doing it, um no. Also, because of the cartoonier style it can belie a character's age and I'm not comfortable with seemingly underage minors doing the do.

I didn't grow up with anime because as a kid because I didn't like how it looked, though I was taking my arguments mostly from Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z. I'm ok with it now but I'm still less inclined to read a comic if it looks too manga-ish. I just prefer a western style more.

That being said, even though I live on superhero comics, I don't care for the overly-muscular "realistic" styles. I feel that mainstream comics are in a good spot right now in that they're will to experiment with more simpler, almost animated styles. But you still get the hulking muscles with veins everywhere from time-to-time and I think that should've stayed in the 90's. I'm not bashing more realistic styles like Jim Lee, but ones that go way overboard to the point where Spider-Man can't bend his back.

exactly what came in mind first time i read the title, and was about to keep scrolling down, but then i remembered that there is a certain type of art that really bothers me, so i was careful with my wording so that i don't hurt anyone's feelings
i agree that this can turn into a gap for online bullying to happen, even by just making people unconfident with speaking freely about their work, specially newcomers.. leaving an impression of distrust

but on the other hand, i think that if all people read this topic with sense of individuality in mind, understanding that all those opinions are but personal opinions and the topic is a survey of some sort, i guess nothing wrong would happen

I think was long as we keep away from outing specific people on Tap and talk only about general ideas of art, we should be fine. Besides, this post proves that people have wide varieties of taste. Expecting everyone to like your style is unrealistic.

You're the first person I've seen on this site distinguish different styles and not lump them all into one category because they come from one country.

@bakasama25 Oh yeah. Japanese animators and comic artist are treated like shit, they give "a labor of love" a whole new meaning since they certainly don't get enough to make a decent living off it. Unless the comic/animation gets huge like the Ghibli movies, or Naruto, which is next to impossible with how insanely competitive those fields of work are.

I'm still going to laugh at nonsensical proportions, and bad animation, though.
