What type of art bothers you?

some art to me look messy those are usually the ones using a airbrush tool... I dont really know maybe this is just me but I find it really bothering. I hate it when hey use weird off tone colors when they shade which makes the art look all weird. Emotionless expressions, and movements that look like they were traced straight out of google... i mean it doesnt stop me from reading a good story but still

i might offend some artist so i colored a pic as an example.... im not the best artist but if ur art look looks like this and ur bragging about being self taught or that school of urs.... uhmm please dont

Hm, well there's this one style of doing faces that I find totally generic and I am less inclined to check out a comic if it uses that. Not that there's anything wrong with that style, it's just I've been oversaturated with it on the internet and I crave something new and different.

As for styles that make me uncomfortable … ones that put so much detail into its subjects it borders on the grotesque, or if it's going for that outright, like R. Crumb's work. I don't wanna look at it for extended periods of time. xD

Perhaps it's because I didn't grow up reading them, but most mainstream superhero comics look... weird to me. The art isn't bad by any means! A lot of it is quite good in terms of composition and inking and stuff! It just looks weird to my eyes because I'm not used to it, and it doesn't appeal to me.

I realise that there is great variation in style between different artists, but there is an overall look that you can immediately identify as superhero-mainstream. The overly detailed musculature, the spandex-like outfits, a lot of the facial expressions, etc. - it's just not my cup of tea.

Overdone art styles kinda turn me off... like art styles similar to Steven Universe, generic anime, or superhero. Even if the art is technically very good it's still going to be hard to draw me in. >.<

I don't generally think I have any particular art styles that are bothering me. Techniques, however...
A HUGE pet peeve is highlighting skin with one white strap - it makes it look plastic and cheap and I associate this with bad erotic art (as it seems to be a horribly popular method of drawing).
Another is "Crazy colourful". Some people need to focus on few colours and match them well instead of including the whole rainbow in the very same panel, it's really annoying the eye.

hahahah same im used to seeing shoujo mangas as i grew up ( probably the reason i like drawing girly boys) so when i see a detailed face especially when they line the side of the cheeks causing charaters to look older kinda bothers me and also some of those weird flaring nostrils (which arent realistic , looks kinda like an outline picture with thick markers) they look very harsh.

Weird you say that, because something really annoys me in Steven Universe's style as well! It just seems too extreme and I don't know why it makes me feel on edge?

I'm bothered when it's clear that someone is borrowing from someone else's work. When there's independent creators who are making generic superhero, manga, or styles taken from animation, I doubt a lot of the creator's originality and ability. Since everyone's talking about it, I see a lot of people copying Steven Universe style, especially with mouths and noses. I don't know why this is so vogue- it's copying. I think if people can't be original with their art, they probably won't be original with their story.

Uhhhh, that's really hard. I know the only anime style I didn't like is Madoka Magica. I hated the faces and I still do. I don't know if I have a specific pet peeve, but I tend not to like Marvel-type art styles if they're done the wrong way. I mean of course bad art bothers anyone but that in particular gets on my nerves.

@alaingrey alaingrey i guess so... but a lot of artist are still finding their own style and they tend to copy, i suggest they done post their story if theyr not ready with original art and story... if theyre doing it just to completely mimic the art i completely despise them...
i did some copying but i finally developed a style im proud of... but i usually see art almost similar to mine because of my coloring and shading i guess they arent that similar

Another tic for steven universe. That kind of style just seems...aggravating to me. Rebecca Sugar's normal style is passable if a lil ugly but I much rather preferred her style in the pilot vs the current show's style. I think its just because it's the prevalent show style of the decade so it's just everywhere/oversaturated.

I really dislike the dc/marvel comic book style for the same reasons that @AnnaLandin mentioned. The facial expressions are often too exaggerated for such a realistic style which makes things seem really uncomfortable or uncanny valley :T

Also art styles that put heavy emphasis on one feature of the face, such as the nose being the same length/width as the face and having extreme detailing while the rest of the face is devoid of any sort of similar shading. I understand why people would do such a thing but at the same time it's just...really unpleasant to look at.

and just in general, no-effort traced-over poser models. stiff and just comes off as extremely lazy.

I'm really not a fan of anything that has that generic CLAMP-esque anime look. Or any anime style where the #1 priority is ensuring the characters all look gorgeous all the time, which means their expressions are determined by how much they raise or lower their eyebrows. :I People's expression range should not be limited to emojis.

Also not a fan of mainstream superhero style, I think the colour palette tends to be a bit garish and they're really limited in their body types.

Ehhh, Steven Universe borrows that from late 80's- early 90's anime, and the mouth, nose, and face shapes appear to be a minimalist style version of Hayao Miyazaki's work.

I mean I love Steven Universe, don't get me wrong, but it's clear that Rebecca Sugar had some strong influences on her style.

So, to be fair, it's hard to be 100% original with any style, but I ultimately agree... I'm sick of seeing the same old thing crop up so much. It's especially awful to see anyone just copy a style. That's an artist's heart and soul right there, at least try to put your spin on it. D:

Ooh I feel like people are getting me wrong here- I really like the style of the show, and I have lots of friends who work very hard on it! But it bothers me when I see your creators borrowing the style to try and get attention for their art fast. If they were going to borrow from Miyazaki and minimalize it in their own way I think they might learn a lot more and be more successful in the long run. That said, when you're a teenager it's probably not a focus to draw in the way that's healthy, haha.

like a lot of what has been said here, if someone's style is too similar to a popular cartoon style i usually skim over it immediately. i realize that art styles follow trends but there is a difference between borrowing certain stylistic elements to incorporate into your work and straight up taking an entire set of stylistic conventions for your own use.

it isn't lazy per se, i just find something somewhat....disingenuous about it. as a reader, i just cant immerse myself in someone's work and be a fan if i know it didnt truly come of their own vision and merit

Forgot to add my two cents on the topic in my last post, but I also agree that generic anime and superhero styles aren't my thing.

One thing people haven't touched on that I find quite abhorrent are the 90's American cartoon styles that featured intentionally dirty looking or deformed linework. Not a popular opinion I'm sure, but I grew up with it, and still disliked the majority of them. Anything like Rugrats, Cow and Chicken, or Ed, Edd, and Eddy just made me sick to my stomach looking at it. Sorry if those shows were your favorites, but I could never watch them because the art grossed me out too much. D:

work that looks terrible and manga that isn't really manga. Don't get me wrong, I love how japanese comics look, but every comic I see is generic anime. It's not even good anime, they all have the same moe bs i've seen a thousand times and it never looks like an actual manga. It looks like some dollar store bootleg anime. Unless you can actually replicate actual manga, your weird uguu characters aren't gonna cut it.
Anime now seems like it's becoming a thing again in art. If I recall everyone wanted to go back to western art a few years ago but now people want to do anime again. So now we have these weird stilted westernized hybrids and it just looks so boring and weird.

Lesson here is work on your own style and stop trying to mainstream your work.
