TLDR: Procreate bc it keeps me grounded while still letting me create fantastically
Story Time
ClipStudio Paint was what I enjoyed when I first started making my comics, but when I switched to a mobile layout I didn't want to pay a sub and I also found the app super crowded on my tablet (Anything smaller than 15 inches for the CSP layout makes my eyes twitch and the largest iPad is 12.9").
Anywho, after looking for options I found Procreate and fell in love. This was before they added text options too so I also bought Affinity Designer to do text stuff and for easier resizing options. Procreate has text tools and I do use them, but if I want something special I'll swap to Affinity, though I'm finding more and more I'll stay in Procreate and just draw the effect if I can get away with it.
CSP was MADE for comics and it shows, it has soooooo many tools for comic artists and it does a fantastic job at being an all-in-one app for comic makers. I really did enjoy using it, but I also found that the number of tools and options it has can lead to me being way too extra and spending eons of time on one-page bc of all the experimenting and extras I like getting into burning through a day. Even when I solidified how I wanted the comic to look, the number of layers I would use for each page was an insane amount of organization. Once I moved to the tablet, it was just not working as my poor iPad pro was struggling to try to deal with all the extra effects I had when loading in CSP on my tablet.
When I started using Procreate I was pretty nervous about the limitations it had, but honestly, I have come to embrace and be thankful for them since I had to get over my fears of messing something up since I could only make so many layers and I didn't get bogged down with a ton of effects as the program limited how many were available. This made me rely more on going with the flow of my pen and having a more organic approach to making things look the way I wanted, which made things faster for me and lead to me feeling more comfortable and loose with how I make my comic. This keeps me in the zone!
ClipStudio MagicalMashup!Prologue
Procreate MagicalMashup! Ch1pg1
I like both pages, but they both have different feels to them. One feels properly structured and fictional but grounded and the other feels a bit more fantastical and well magical to me. I'm not huge on everything being perfectly aligned and straight, so more organic and free form works for me, it's scary to jump into though no lie. Some other things I like about Procreate are flawless Auto Saving, and it also is extremely optimized so loading takes no time since whatever you are working on is made to work effortlessly in the app, and that has been such a time saver when I'm drawing on the go.
Folks will have different opinions on what works better, but I picked the software that let me get my vision out as easily as possible. Though there are no right or wrong answers, it's what works best for your workflow
