The Third Man - 1949

An American is asked by his friend to come to post-war Vienna, for a job of sorts. Then, after he arrives, he finds out the friend is dead?! The American then sets out to investigate.

Might be a cheat, but...

  • Blade Runner
  • 1982
  • A burnt-out ex police operative is yanked out of retirement to track down a group of illegal artificial life-forms that have landed on Earth and seem to have an unhealthy interest in the corporation that created them.

It's on the list!!, I've heard wonders about that movie!

Haha I've just watched it before you suggested it, like i paused the last 10 minutes of the movie, checked out the forums and you made the suggestion xD

I've always thought Blade Runner was a classic but a Cyberpunk Classic, but hey, if you're telling me it's noir I might give it a chance, also I like cyberpunk, so, why not?

It takes elements from cyberpunk, but also from Film Noir. And a few other things too

In terms of modern noir, 2005's Brick is criminally underrated. It moves the genre to a current high school situation and it fits like a glove.

1997's L.A. Confidential is amazing as well.

Personally a huge fan of Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train (1951). Two strangers meet on a train, both with someone they want dead.

Diao Yinan's Black Coal Thin Ice (2014) is also a real good watch, though it's kind of slow. Years after a particularly grisly murder case, a police officer finds additional information that throws the previous solution into doubt.

Blade Runner is considered Neo-Noir, so yeah, totally fits  It's certainly one of my favorites!

I also adore:

Out of the Past (1947)
A private investigator trying to escape his past gets drawn back in by the woman who embroiled him in a plot.

Scarlet Street (1945)
A femme fatale and her boyfriend take advantage of a middleaged painter to get money from him. I love how much this one goes off the rails xD

Sunset Boulevard (1950)
A languishing screenwriter gets drawn into the world of a fading silent film star- this movie has inspired tons of directors and has a lot of scenes that are very famous.

Chinatown (1974)
Another Neo-Noir due to its release date, a detective investigating an affair gets drawn into a murder and coverup in southern California.

:nerd: i really love noir and there are so many good ones! All the rest in this thread are great too!!

I love the current suggestions. I am a HUGE noir buff myself. Strangers on a Train is amazing, and is worth the watch, even for the crazy ending.

However, one movie that has slipped past everyone's nets is the movie that started the NOIR movement: Double Indemnity. Directed by Billy Wilder (all his movies are good, really).
This is the film that started the high-contrast, heavily narrated style of crime thrillers.

Never heard of those, are fairly new for my taste but i'll give them a shot when it's time

Most likely i'll watch Diao Tinan's Black Coal thin Ice instead of Strangers on a Train, I said to myself long time ago, "when I sit to watch a Hitchcock's movie I'll have to watch all his filmography."

Indeed I already watched the THird man and touch of evil, very good ones (The Third man was better IMO), And a friend of mine already suggested me to watch Chinatown, But before that one I'll give it a shot those from the 40's and 50's :DDD, and before watching any of those I'lll watch Elevator to the Gallows heard few songs of it's ost and it gave me vibes.

Jmm as you depict it seems very interesting, I believe i'll watch this one after watching "Elevator to the Gallows"

Thank you guys for sharing those gems with me :DDDD
