What's your comic's genre and an unorthodox thing you've done with it

My comic is heavily influenced by battle shounen it has a power system, progressively stronger enemies, plots that revolve around 'What it means to be a warrior' and 'Do you have the spirit to fight' pretty typical stuff. So the first thing I've done is make large scale battle become a more frequent phenomenon so grand strategy is a huge factor. I also did some thing a little different as well, my MC unlike other medieval fantasy shounen protagonists, which for some reason, have an education, is illiterate. So, I've decided to make the power progression also evolve around the MC learning about the world, discovering his thirst for knowledge and his predilection towards science, specifically Botany, Biology and Geology, or at least the limited understandings of those three sciences and how he can use these understandings in strategy later in the series. Anyway, I just wanted my MC to leave kind of a legacy behind, like advancements in warfare or something, so I came to consider science as a whole, since I'm considering going into the Biology field myself

I'm currently on hiatus due to health issues so you can check out my comic if you want, even though I wouldn't bother. Just know there isn't much progress yet, and that the art in the last update is not a good reflection of my current level

My comic is based on two-worlds type fantasy/fairie stories which have a heavy focus on the main character's woes being physically represented in the fantasy realm. As well, they typically see the 'earthling' bring some new perspective to the fantasy world that they didn't have before. They also fall in love with the handsome prince or princess who is from this new fantasy realm.

In the end, I do none of those things. In fact, my goal is to subvert normal young adult fantasy. Though my main character still has to learn something, the fantasy realm does not revolve around her. In fact, the characters she meets, though charming, have goals and aspirations that may conflict with her own.
I also am writing it with a much more adult spin in mind. Though, I still try to keep it light and airy. I want it to be fun, but also to carry some weight.

Interesting, A weighty story would also be my intent. Since my story, in the end revolved around a civil war, I've gone to great lengths exploring things like PTSD in ancient times and it's treatment in war-like societies which would also stray from Shounen norms I guess.

I wouldn't say it is the genre, but the theme. It is Jekyll and Hyde, but what's unorthodox about it... where do I even start?
- Jekyll is just as important as Hyde.
- Neither one is one dimension (one is all good and the other is all bad)
- Hyde is not evil
- Jekyll and Hyde can and do get along
- Hyde does not get away with everything he does

Overall, it takes the old fashioned view of Jekyll and Hyde and brings it more up to date socially. When it comes to the nature of duality and being good or bad. We now know that things are not binary. Our moral alignment is very complicated and even two who are complete opposites can both be good or both be bad. That and whether you are Jekyll or Hyde, you can't just hide behind another identity from your problems. Your actions have consequences.

The genres are definitely sci-fi and drama.

I think an unorthodox aspect of it is that the story has three main characters that don't act as a group. Most of the time, they actually operate separately and with their own interests. This happened because the story is based on a roleplaying game me and some friends invented played, and the characters are the player's characters, so none is more important than the other. And if there is one thing we avoid in RPGs, is to have a party where everyone has the same or similar goals.

Genre: Comedy/ Adventure/ fantasy

The unortodox thing about it: The protagonist is an inanimate rock, and all the other characters act like it is the greatest hero ever.

This rock is a blatant Mary Sue. Is admired by friends, considered the biggest treat by his enemies and somehow can defeat the forces of evil in spectacular ways.

My story is a bit of an oddball so I'm not really sure how to explain it but... Drama fits in the best, but it takes place in a fantasy universe with magicians, except the story is just about a guy that has no magical abilities. His power is his brain, but he's mostly just suffering from it. It's not a grand epic with some intense stuff happening to a "chosen one" there's just this smart guy that wants to make a difference through words. Maybe doesn't sound like the most exciting premise, but it's a story I want to tell.

Deadeye is just chock full of unorthodox stuff. It's in the superhero genre, and I try to keep spotlighting that "wacky smart-aleck saves the day" theme as much as I can. But because it's so different, sometimes that gets pushed to the back in favor of all the juicy drama~.

-Death is the hero...and life is the villain. I thought it would be cool to reverse the roles for a change~.
-The hero has a lot of problems...a lot of hero stories try to reconcile the hero and their alter-ego and make them both strong in their own ways, but Deadeye's alter ego (a) hardly shows up at all, for reasons and (b) would honestly not be much good to anyone. His hero persona is less of a powered-up version of his true self and more of a crutch that allows him to function as a human being.
-The story takes place in a small town, not a city. It's out in Arizona, even, so I have to keep reminding myself that the characters probably wouldn't wear layers or long sleeves. ^^;

I could go on about Deadeye's weirdness for days, but I've said too much already~

Hmmm... Well mine's a supernatural/mystery comic and I guess it's pretty weird compared to most stories of that nature...

the protagonist is a normal human, while most of the cast are magical
heaven is corrupt, while hell is more or less neutral
heaven and hell both exist, but all the known religions are wrong about them
the protagonist actually deserves what's happening to him, he's just stubborn
there's a ghost in the story but she doesn't do any haunting - she just lives as a normal citizen
a witch hunt takes place, where the accused is not a wish but the accuser is
there's a "God" but they quit their job and left heaven a long time ago
the protagonist's love interest is saving him, not the other way around (because he's only human but Foreas has power)
good people don't win - they learn to be more cruel or they get screwed over

Uhm...
My comic's genre is Romance/fantasy and is a remake of red riding hood

Probably the most unorthodox things about this are:

-The hunter is a woman and is actually the villain of the story

The bad wolf falls in love with red riding hood
Red riding hood is not a innocent little girl, but a young lady with a dark traumatic past and a magic red cloak that can take the shape of weapons based on her emotions
the cloak is cursed
this could be a spoiler but, red riding hood might be a wolf as well.

Yeah...i like to mess up my storie ssso much XD fight me.

My comic falls under the dystopia genre, maybe sci fi (with influences from the likes of Battle Angle Alita, Akira and Ghost in the Shell), but I probably don't have enough science for that =D There also is a good dose of drama in there.

The most unorthodox thing is probably that I introduced a typical narrative of a rebellion fighting back against social injustice, with the rebellion actually being closer to terrorism in every possible way. This also leads to the journey of the main characters ("joining a good cause to help their own people") becoming a lot darker in the process and brings a bit of tragedy into the mix.

I used a lot of the traditional heroes journey build for the story, I have discovered. But I think it is fun to call into question if it is actually a "heroes" journey. Aside from that I try to show that there are good and bad people on both sides of the conflict, but that's not to unorthodox I think ^^

[Comedy] Parody of a bunch of manga cliches from the neon hair to the bumping-into-someone-at-the-corner. It's effective for people who are familiar with classic shounen and shoujo manga from the 2000s.

[Thriller] Animal abuser child and a pedophilic teacher. Is it karma for hurting those animals to get hunted by a bigger predator?

[BL] Absolutely nothing particularly unorthodox except maybe a lot more poop humor than normal. Yes. A penis goes up the butt. Poop lives in the butt.

[Comedy] A bratty phantom-thief and the tired detective who deals with all his messes. Totally not an original idea amirite? The only twist is that they're all furries.

my comic is adventure/fantasy. the unorthadox thing about mine is that the main character is basically an antihero. while she has the role of a protagonist, her personality is very stubborn, rude and not quite likeable, while (in my opinion) the antagonists would be the more likeable characters in the story.

We haven't gotten there in our comic but... we have a sci fi/ post apocalyptic comic where all the humans are now gone and the robots are now the only intelligent life left. The big thing we are doing is that color is super important. We see the colors they can see; black, white, grey, blue, red, brown. as the story goes on, colors will be unlocked for the robots- leading them closer to a plan set in motion a long long time ago.

Also, there isn't really fighting for parts and the two sides warring aren't fighting the side the main character is on. So it's more her trying to work around them while they keep trying to blow each other up.

There’s a character in my comic who has depression, but I wanted to portray it realistically while not weighing down the story and making it seem Too tragic. So I decided to personify her conscience into a mother-like figure that constantly snaps at her for doing the “wrong” thing - this way it seems more relatable and realistic than having a shadow creature whisper “you’re so ugly” into her ear every 5 minutes (I see depression portrayed this way a lot). At least in my experience, depression sort of skewed my brain into thinking that doing certain things was correct - “ let’s stay in bed today, it won’t matter if we miss a couple of days of school.” ¯_(ツ)_/¯ stuff like that. It’s not that a separate evil force just decided to start bullying you, it’s that your own brain just turns on itself and gets really confused.

And also I guess I haven’t seen as many monochromatic comics out there it was really just me not knowing color theory but I guess my limited palette kind of fits the jazz vibes so all is well

So I work within the Fantasy Genre but Im not sure which part of what i do would be the MOST unorthodox. I think the two that are the strangest coincide with each other. Even though I play with the Fantasy Genre I tend to focus on drama aspects or romance over the world building and magic (altho they exists and are developed) the obvious idea of a "heroes journey" isn't a structure I follow very closely. Which if I'm correct is the norm for fantasy stories. I believe most start with the hero going on a journey, falling out of sorts and then getting back up to "do the thing". While my story not only starts with the "Done F**ed up" part but also just sticks with it and explores the fun (not fun) adventures of dealing with depression and trying not to repeat mistakes that are horribly easy to repeat. Maybe its not as unorthodox as i think? :v if not id love to see some other works like mine to add to my reading list~

My comic is a contemporary fantasy. Where it is possible I try to keep the 'natural' in the supernatural. For a specific example, the third chapter's monster of the week is werewolves but rather than following the typical lunar cycle trigger, their changes are determined by fluctuations in the endocrine system. It has nothing to do with the full moon, everything to do with hormones.
