she had whooped the ass of the grandson of Luke Skywalker (Kylo Ren) who had been trained for years under the grandmaster Snoke and Luke. And her “training” in TLJ isn’t passable. I’ll admit they really screwed up her “training” in that movie.

Kylo Ren was clearly injured before Rey entered the battle...plus, the planet was kind of falling apart; it wasn't a clean or fair fight. =/

I don't know what to say about the training (tbh, I always find the 'training' to be hokey in pretty much all sci-fi movies). Besides, without a proper timeline for how long she was out there and what she was doing (and a record of prior combat experience), I think it's pointless to try to pass judgement.

That being said, why does a character have to get their 'ass whooped' and 'come back a badass' in order to be valid?? There's more than one kind of conflict for a character to surmount, even in an action movie, and I feel like people are ignoring everything else in the movies just to scream 'SHE'S TOO GOOD WITH THE FORCE'!

Rey's parents being revealed as nobodies is what suddenly made her a Mary Sue.

...How does that work?? I really don't understand how parentage alone can turn an okay character into a bad one. .___.

I haven't conducted a scientific study, but given that I've trooped with the 501st and Rebel Legion since these groups were in their infancy, I am pretty well plugged into SW fandom. I don't see fewer little girls cosplaying as Rey now than I did when TFA first came out.

Again luke took an entire movie to learn how to lift a space ship- actually he didn’t lift it yoda had to do it for him. Rey lifts about 70 without any struggle or effort, she looks BORED doing it actually.

I was referring to the fact that it seemed in TFA that should always seemed to have the right skill for the job with little to no explanation of how she could do it. (E.I. repairing the Falcon and then piloting it super well, that sort of stuff.) It felt kind of more like she was just an "Incredible Human Plot Device" than really anything else. That, and she kept robbing my boi Finn of any meaningful moments in the movies.

Yeah, those are the kinds of things that make her look 'eh' as a character. ^^; But considering that she hasn't really gotten many chances to "save the day" despite her obvious surplus of talent is what confuses me the most about all the scrutiny she receives.

She is a bit of a prodigy, yes. But she's not showboating. No one in the series is fawning over her. Only one character behaves like he might be in love with her (and now he might have eyes for someone else~). So I ask again, what has she done wrong?? Is being a prodigy in itself that much of a sin?

...She's spent the majority of her young adult life scavenging ships, learning all about their parts and their mechanisms (how else can she identify which ones are valuable?). Sure, I don't know how she learned to fly, but it's not completely implausible that she'd know anything at all about how to work the Falcon. =/

Then complain about the writing and leave the character alone. It's possible to have a story in which decent characters aren't used to their fullest potential, or are handled badly. If people's main problem is with the story, then Rey shouldn't be singled out the way she is. There's more to the writing than just her.

Uh...the word is 'prodigy'; 'progeny' is different...

Besides, the struggle is only important when the end goal of the struggle is the end goal of the story. I don't think the point of this story is to make Rey a Jedi master or even a great warrior. And in that case, there'd be no real value in making her go through all the cliche'd training montages and battles for honor...apart from satisfying the expectations of people who don't want to see anything else.

I think the content of the struggles she IS experiencing, rather than the ones people THINK she should be experiencing, are going to prepare her for her destiny. And if they don't, THEN we can judge.

I...really don't think her parents are that much of a big deal in the grand scheme of things?? I mean, if that's ALL the writers are going to be inconsistent about, I'll be able to forgive it. They were important back when their existence was going to prevent Rey from leaving her home and joining the story; at the moment, they're going to have to give me a new reason to care about them, 'cause I don't currently have one. =/

That's just a preference. It doesn't mean she's a bad character, because it's not under her control. It's like saying a philanthropist would be more likeable if they'd had to earn the riches that they give away instead of inheriting them. It's unfair, to say the least. =_0

There is a difference from inheriting riches and hitting the genetic lottery. Up until TLJ being a Jedi master or even a Jedi you had to been born with the ability. And if you weren't it was a crap shoot if you could learn. TLJ turned the whole thing into everyone gets a participation award. To me if Rey's parents had been connected tot he Jedi order it would have gone a long way to explain why she is so uber. I felt if JJ had made the second movie we would have seen an explanation to why she was so strong in the force and have her make a major failure much like Luke went through in the ESB.

Luke was not just an orphaned farm boy of legendary (some say prophesied) heritage and is unusually talented with the Force, capable of using the Force to destroy a planet-killing space station and save the day with maybe a few hours of light saber practice, but he was (the most important characteristic of Mary Sues of any gender) a blatant self-insert. Rey is not a self insert. She has no prophecy attached to herself or anyone related to her. And while Luke didn't always make friends easily, Rey started off good, but not exactly friendly toward anyone.

That's my biggest issue with Rey's backstory or origin is the very fact that it turns out she isn't special at all - she's not from a Jedi bloodline or royalty - she's just a desert dweller with hardly any past, yet she can use the force and use it way too well for someone who just got thrown into the midst of a hundreds-year long regime war. Using that logic, FINN could be a damn Jedi. ANYONE can be a jedi. You don't need experience or training and it doesn't matter who you are or who you're related to. That's altering the lore of what SW had set up previously only to make an exception for the new lead character. She's not special (and she doesn't have to be special in the sense that she needs to be a princess or "the chosen one") she's just as much of a normie as all the other side characters. It doesn't make sense with how Star Wars had always been written.

I would accept Rey as a good character if they actually showed her learning to do amazing shit. But they never explained or showed her LEARNING anything. She just does it willy nilly and we are expected to believe that she just can? How can she speak wookie? How could she re-wire and fly the Milennium Falcon? Why did Luke's light saber call to HER of all people? It's never explored. She bested Kylo Ren in battle (even Finn couldn't defeat him when Kylo was injured..Finn, who is already a trained storm trooper and probably has more combat experience than Rey), she bested Luke on the island and could have killed him, she killed a few of those red soldier guys that worked for Snoke without but a scratch on her arm. How? It's lazy.

Luke started as a Rebel fighter and flew a ship to destroy the Death Star, not using a light saber. He learned that in the second movie. He had a full movie of learning. He started as a naive, whiney farm boy, joined the Rebels, learned the Force, faced his father, failed, but ultimately came out on top a stronger person than he was at the start of his 3-part arc.

If they fixed some of the things people complain about, I wouldn't doubt for a second that Rey would be a great lead. She has the gumption, the attitude, the charm to do it.

This seems to be the weird disconnect for a lot of people that we think rey is awful for the soul reason that she’s a Mary Sue but the fact is there’s plenty of Mary Sues people love like Batman and Superman- hell I love sailor moon the biggest crybaby Mary Sue But the difference between all these characters is the writing and unfortunately we HAVE to break her down point by point in the movies in order to explain why she is not only a Mary Sue But a Poorly writer Mary Sue.

Okay...so what you're saying is that it's still possible for Rey to be gifted with the force even without having Jedi parents. Unlikely, but still possible. So the backstory is valid.

As far as I know, the Jedi are an organization, not a race. Her parents might well be nobodies...or they could be distant cousins of some Jedi master, if you insist that she has to be related to someone with talent in order to have her own. =/

Not all great Jedi are famous. Not all great Jedi stay with the order. There are plenty of ways to make the current explanation work even with the limitation you've imposed on it.

Or, like I said, she could just be a random prodigy. Like, in real life, is every genius born to genius parents?? Why this insistence that she has to come from 'somebody' in order to be 'somebody'? It's a little unsettling.
