Why do people not sub?

So I have almost 2000 views, 249 likes, but 39 subscribers.

I'm just curious what turns people away from not subbing the comic.

It could be simply it's not their cup of tea. It could be the artwork, it could be how the story is being told.

I should just focus on telling my story and not worry if I get subbers but I still think about it in the back of my mind.

Whats the best advice?

If there's any one that that'll always be unpredictable its human being and their actions and choices. Sometimes the reason for not subscribing could be something really small or simple other times it could be something more but you may never know what unless they say so.

The most common reasons do tend to fall under what you mentioned though:

not their cup of tea. It could be the artwork, it could be how the story is being told

so that said the best course of action is to keep updating and wait till folks come around

I've actually seen some instances or had it happen myself where I'd take a look at a certain novel or comic, it catch my interest and I'd think I'd subbed to go back and read it later and lo and behold I hadn't done it. Plus if you forget the name of a work finding it again can be tough. So forgetfulness or just missing the sub button happens.

I can imagine for a fact that people who're completely new to Tapas might not know how to navigate the site so they're learning as they browse. It's one of the reasons I'll try to mention things like likes, subs, and comments at the bottom of an episode (even if it's a turn off for some folks)

Still keep at it and even if you might not get those subs right away you can still remember that there's still folks presently engaged and interested in your work, best of luck

I will keep my chin up and keep creating. You are right I do have a few people that always catch up with my comic which is very sweet.

I honestly wish I knew. My book doesn’t grow any more, so I just figured it found all its readers, and they just keep reading it & there is just nobody else out there who wants to read it. It sucks, but there is not anything I can think of doing apart from deleting it, but that would be churlish to people who do read it.

The struggle is real. I understand what you're saying too. Have you tried to get new subs in the forums? I also have the same people that read my pages regularly. But I'm not going to give up until I've told my story to the point I am happy with it.

It's part of a promise I made to myself that I would finish a comic before age 30 but couldn't fufill that because I'm 2 years late. Now I'm going to say I made it to chapter 2-3 and I am content and satisfied. The little girl who made that promise will be happy and proud.

There's all kinds of readers. I've kind of been really interested in the various types. I made a list:
1. Those that do read quite a bit but do not subscribe, perhaps as you've mentioned that they lose interest or perhaps something isn't their cup a tea. Nothing to be offended over, just look on the brightside, they took an interest and had an experience with your work And there are subscribers currently with you who are there and there will be more later one ^^
2. Those that do subscribe but do not comment or like.
3. Those that like the first episode and subscribe but do not continue to like or comment.
4. Those that subscribe and like the most current episode and continue to like each episode after, but do not comment.
5. Those that subscribed and like each episode but do not comment.
6. Those that subscribed, like and comment random episodes.
7. Those that subscribed, like and comment every episode.

There are probably many more variations, but this is what I observed. I think it's all so interesting. I love noticing interesting things like this

To me, there's nothing wrong with any of these types. I appreciate and respect all of these types of readers. I know it's not easy to not feel affected by the choices people make, but there's nothing wrong with your or anyone else's creations if people do not do this or do not do that. It's just like when people have certain tendencies or likes or dislikes. If I like chocolate cake and you like strawberry, that doesn't mean either is better than the other. If someone turns down either one that doesn't mean they're bad! And if someone goes to a restaurant and gives gratuity but another does not, that does not mean one liked the meal more than the other. Perhaps one couldn't spare a few bucks? Perhaps they don't give gratuity, it's just the way they are, just what they tend to not do.

I wish I knew either but I'm grateful for all the readers/subscribers that I have. My series isn't the standard "webnovel" format so I can see why it might not appeal to some readers. I just remind myself that people are still reading my work. In the roughly 2 and a half months I've been on this site, I just hit the 1.1K reads mark. It took me year plus to hit that mark on WP and most of those reads were probably me doing proofreading and checking comments. I must be doing something right for people to still be checking out my work.

I always get the impression that it is mainly authors who like and comment. I don't know if there is a way to have Tapas encourage the random readers to like. If I read a chapter I will just about always like it.

I’ve met a few people on the forum & they are great, but I am hoping for organic growth in readers who would just like reading my story. Why more people don’t like my book, I don’t know. Personally, I think it’s pretty interesting.

Can I be honest with you?

I looked at your comic, my first reaction was uncomfortable. The first thing I saw was a weird title on each episode called "Grandpa" and the strange thumbnail of a girl looking all sexual, same on the cover.

I was expecting the worse when I clicked into the pages. but they are actually good! So it could be they thought the same way as I did but didn't click into the actual pages?

This is just my thoughts of the "why".

There could be all sorts of factors. Some ones I've noticed because I am a black and white page format comic creator myself, many won't sub if it isn't phone format (they're on they're phones so it's hard to read) or they won't sub because it's not in color (many people have a problem where they can't tell the difference between characters in black and white comics. This can be helped by adding some contrast in hair, but overall...it's just a problem some people have)

I can tell that you're learning and getting better as you go, so don't despair if the numbers are small now. As you improve, so will the numbers, just gotta do the time. There's not really a quick fix to learning. But as you learn to draw more cleanly (which is honestly just practice) it'll attract more people. But for my 2 cents, trying to fix everything all at once with a huge check-list of things to improve on, is overwhelming, especially for a beginner, and might just...stall your progression. It's best to focus on one place of improvement at a time.

Your art has simple lines and no color. The backgrounds are very basic and lack perspective.

Your story is a bit obvious when it comes to plot and dialogue, yet shows promise in how you transition from plot points and exposition.

Given those 40 subs, you seem to be doing well with what you have. I recommend you study anatomy(manga), perspective backgrounds, shading, and maybe some color if you wanna improve that. The color you used for the cover is simple yet stylish.

Thanks for the advice it really makes a lot of sense. I do need clean lines. My hand is slowly healing I can type better and draw actually so that's good.

I will release my comic in color when the time is right. Right now I currently am lacking in coloring skills. At the level I am now, there's no way I could be able to release one colored page a week. I already struggle with clean lines and more perspective drawings.

I guess I wanted to tell my comic with the skills I have now and couldn't wait.

In the future I know I actually will use color, but for now one step at a time.

Oh yeah, I feel the pain, I once did a comic on carpal tunnel and it's lines were...way worse than what you've done here. Carpel tunnel is the worst.
