Why don’t werewolves have beards?

Specifically in human form. I’ve seen plenty of stories that talk about how their hair (as human) is more full etc., but this never seems to apply to facial hair. SHOULDN’T IT?!

Haha I just really like beards and a beard didn't fit with Jackson's character so Wren got the beard! I do tend to imagine werewolves as being hairier in their human forms though, which is probably why it was so much easier to imagine Wren with a beard.

Well, I mean, it depends. Perhaps the werewolf in question is too young, perhaps they shave, perhaps it just doesn't fit the character design.

For example, I have a werewolf in my stories who doesn't have a beard in human form. He doesn't have a beard because a beard really wouldn't fit with his design, although he does have some notable scruff and stubble.
Personally, I think saying that a werewolf definitely should or shouldn't have a beard is too limiting and short-sighted, if they have a beard it should fit.

Well, most men are clean shaven if they live urban lifestyle, so they probably just try to fit in.

What about a werewolf story where the dude had to shave a full beard every time he changed back. (I can't say for classic werewolves, but I think the reason most modern wolfies don't have beards is because they are portrayed as younger people, and we associate teenagers with lacking facial hair, even if it is plausible that they could potentially have it.)

My mmc from book 1 mostly has stubbles because he's too lazy to shave daily

But then again... They are shifters. not werewolves xD thats a different discussion though.

@WillowTree - I really appreciate that’s how you made your decision about beards that sparked the question that’s been plaguing me for a month

@Enigma_the_Slimy_Boi - I actually think notable scruff and stubble makes a lot of sense (and would technically fall under having a beard) no one ever seems to show facial hair upkeep, though. Shouldn’t they, at least, have to shave semi regularly?

@TheGreatArtisan - tbf, I’m not super versed in werewolf/shifter stories and lore. But it’s so rare!

@Pony_wearing_a_hat - omg that sounds really fun yes, I do think a lot of werewolf/shifter stories are YA and aimed at people not really dealing with daily shaving.

I love this that totally counts as a beard and I appreciate the beard rep (and I still need to read your story!!) I was totally using werewolf and shifter interchangeably, but, you’re right, that’s a whole different discussion

Aren't werewolves in media usually burly and really hairy though? Like aren't they always savage/ crass men in leather pants juxtaposed next to the aristocratic and sleek vampires?

Underwold-series and What We Do in the Shadows (possibly excluding the bad boy Deacon) follow this formula. I don't remember if twilight werewolves were like this because I think they were native americans or something, and treating them as low class savages would be really racist.

@gempompadour - ooh, that’s true. I forgot about underworld. This also falls under the “I forgot to specify werewolf vs shifter” and I think the twilight werewolves are technically shifters?? So that changes things, too. Despite the terms being used interchangeably quite a bit.

So, for mine, beardgrowth is like you'd see with humans.
Not that I really write when someone shaves or not. But when they never have a beard and suddenly do because of (for example) no time, someone will mention it

@gempompadour - I’m not positive! So don’t quote me on that! But, if I have typical “rules” correct, werewolves are infected and turn under the full moon. Whereas shifters it’s usually hereditary (?) and they can shift whenever they want. Right?

I don't have a huge amount of knowledge regarding fictional werewolves, so I can't say whether clean shaven or bearded werewolves are the majority - but the bearded ones that first came to mind for me are Alcides from True Blood and the werewolf boyfriend in Sarah Andersen's Fangs.
