Why is sexuality such a big deal?

Hi guys!
Are you ready for another long and meaningful discussion? My question is that why does sex sells so well compare to other genres. You know the ones... Why is having a female kissing a male more controversial than the end of the world? Why is a man holding another man's hand more attention-grabbing than a whole massacre of an entire town? My concern is that future works of comics will flood us readers with sexy times and panty shots than a thought-provoking piece of art. I'm beginning to see less and less of a plot and just straight up soft core pornography. Share me your thoughts and concern because I love myself some juicy gossip!

Sex probably sells better than most thing is probably because it is a topic particularly everyone knows about and most risky. This is just my assumption of it anyways. I believe if you tied thoughtful story telling with sex or romance it can appeal to a wider audience.

People love erotic things, it's stimulating. Why do you think 50 shades of grey is popular? It's psychological. It's the same reason why advertisers use it.

This won't be a problem, way before the internet there have been erotic novels and comic books, tons of the stuff. If you look at the top comics in Tapastic and the top comics sold in the USA via diamond, you won't see that many pointless erotic stories. If all you read is manga, you will most likely see panty shots, but there is still a story. Not everyone likes romance or cares for panty shots.

Just because a bunch of amateur artist/creators make pointless, plotless stories filled with erotic nonsense doesn't mean that it will become the norm.

It's already like that. In fact, it's been that way as far as I can remember.

Also, consider these two points:

1. Sexy and thought-provoking are not mutually exclusive. Conversely, just because a work isn't sexy, doesn't make it thought-provoking.

2. Sexuality and sexy are not always the same thing. An image of two men holding hands is not sexually provocative, just as an image of a man and a woman holding hands is not automatically sexy/sexual. It just implies something about the sexual orientation of the characters portrayed.

I'm not sure if you mean sexuality or sex so I'll just go by what the title says.

A lot of people, including the tapastic community, are at this age in there lives where they're just starting to form their identity and near the final round of cognitive growth. This is usually around the age of 18-25, with younger outliers being the most prominent. That mixed with social media and all these new identities people are speaking out about has fueled the popularity of non hetero-normative sexuality and identity. The "sex" part of sexuality is just one side of the dice. A lot of comics will focus on this genre because they feel a comic about identity/sexuality is a thought-provoking piece of art. Which, it can be, but this sort of genre is becoming so over-saturated that sometimes the "thought-provoking" part is merely replaced by "I'M DIFFERENT YEAH IM DIFFERENT".

Not to confuse sexuality with just sex, which is its own genre that's existed for forever. Sexual identity sells so well because it specifically appeals to an age-group where sexual identity is the most important thing in their lives even if the sexual identity being discussed is not the same as their own. It's about the principal, not the act. Coming out about your identity or supporting someone who is is just super hot and neato today.

As far as I can tell building an audience with sexual content is slightly easier than many other topics but at the end it seems to almost limit the audience the story is capable of reaching. The most popular stories don't usually revolve around sex, the advertising can take advantage of sexual undertones but the story itself most likely is not about sex.

I wish sexuality could be examined more in stories without them being explicitly about one thing only.
