Or why total subs number is nothing but an illusion.

Those who wants sub x sub, will just end with a bunch of inactive subs. Even if you need the subs to unlock something, most of them wont help. Some just sub or follow due to obligation, but they have no interest in your content.

For example: in webtoons you need 1k subs and 40k monthly page views to be available for ads. Now, as someone who has a series that reached the 1k sub, that wasn't the hard part. The hard part is having the constant 40k views every month (at best i made around or less than 10k views a months, so... never ads).

Or in tapas you need a certain number of sub to unlock ink or ads or whatever, the inactive sub won't give you ink, comment, like, or the ads views.

The same could be said about follow x follow on instagram, or watch x watch on deviantart, or anything similar. The sub number is useless if it doesn't get you views or likes. Same as having 500 "friends" on facebook, but only having like 10 or less real friends.

My current series "has" 800 subs, but every episode only gets less than 10 comments and an average of 50 likes. So i only count those as the real active subs.

That's why i give a LOT more importance to numbers of comments, likes or patreons, because those are active and invested in my stuff.

For example, my patreon https://www.patreon.com/kazsup3
Only have 2 patreon, but i know those are active supporters that donate to me.
In my view 2 patreons >>>>>>>> 800 or more subs

If i had to rank it will be:

1) Patreon/and other donators (the ones that go out of their way to support)
2) Comments (these are the ones that are, most of the times, invested in the story).
3) Likes (at least an indicator of how many liked a certain episode).

bottom last: numbers of subs, as the mayority seem to be inactive.

Even if you don't do the sub x sub thing you will get this. On twitter i have some 1300 followers, mostly post drawings. Average post get something between 40 to 70 likes, little to no comment. Very few times i get more than 100

This is kind of why I don't do sub x sub stuff. I do the "post your comic if your sub count is below x" though because if people like your comic they will sub to you and will most likely be active readers, unlike in sub for subs.

True. You can have millions of subs, but what's the point if they're not active? I'm making comic so people could read it and get invested enough to interact with it. Not to watch numbers of people who clicked one button grow.

Gotta admit tho, that I like celebrating milestones. xD

I agree with most said, but do not forget the "silent readers". Views is really the best indicator for your active subs

To be fair, even if you dont do Sub 4 Sub,it doesn't really change anything, at least for people like me, only a few people interact with my work and that's only on the occasion. Realistically it doesn't make a difference either way, there's not much of a point to most of my subs anyway and it's probably the same for some of you guys.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but also if people wanna do sub 4 sub I don't see the big deal about it. Sometimes the forums get really mean about it, idk. Let people do it if they want. And I say this with my super super dead tapas comic lol.

Sub 4 Sub really doesn't work unless you guys mutually enjoy each other's work.

Yup, I do not do sub x sub for this very reason. Only sub to me if you like my comic3, and I will do the same.

Explaining that is always awkward, too. That's what I really hate. I have to explain to them that I won't subscribe to their comic essentially because I don't like it while also trying to make sure they don't unsubscribe out of spite.

It's annoying AF.

The only unsub I have for my comic was from a person who wanted a sub x sub... I happened to not care for the comic much.

I still get both private/public messages asking to do the "sub4sub" and I have come to the conclusion that it's a waste of time replying to these people and explain why I don't want to participate. Sadly, I have to treat it like any other spam and delete their messages due to the context because I don't want that to sit on my wall where I engage with my subs.

I argue about the position of likes being the last, since a lot of people won't comment on stuff and instead just like it silently. Views to likes ratio, when there's no comments, gives me information about who's an active reader.
When I get asked to do sub4sub, I politely decline them because I just don't have time to guarantee them me actually being an active follower.

When it comes to subscribers, I have pretty much stopped looking at it so much and focused more on the views. This video pretty much made me open my eyes to the posibility that 1 sub does not always equal 1 view

I see a trend now where more new creators are asking for sub4sub. And I always tell them politely that I’m not doing it but I will give there stuff a fair read.

This is why I like "post your X themed comics/novels" here threads way better. People are more likely to sub if they're sharing a common interest and actually care to engage, rather than trying to go for a big number. I actually found a few I really like and look foward to every update with that, that I'd never find just by browsing!
