Are the characters going to be drawn digitally with the backgrounds being traditional?

I might check it out depending on how the finished product looks, if it's going to have the 80's sci-fi look shown in the last example, it'll be intriguing to say the least!
Ho boy, you are a salt mine, though! I mean, I can't talk since I can be one too. But when faced with feedback on your work, if you're having an emotional reaction, it's good to step away for a bit to take it all in then come back with your response after a cool down. If you don't agree or don't find the feedback useful, it's best to just say 'thank you' and move on. It's always good to remember that criticism of your work isn't criticism of you as a person.
You're kinda new here (or at least I only remember seeing you these past few days), so regulars aren't going to automatically know about your Autism. While you're getting established here it would be good to bring it up for a few posts until everyone gets to know you, like "Hey, just to let you all know, I'm Autistic so I may process some things differently than a neurotypical person.". Sure, it's awkward, but most people here are understanding and will be considerate of your situation if you let them know right away.

Anyways! I'm done lecturing you, I'm sure you've already heard/read more than enough.
If you want to see some comics with really interesting visual styles; Seluda, There Was a War, SUPERPOSE, Skeletons in the Closet, Hookteeth and Weaker Sides are pretty awesome!

If you're going by Japanese inspired styles as the norm my comic can technically be considered "unique". It's western, kinda semi-realistic? And traditionally drawn, super loosely inspired by open impressionism as far as coloring and has complimentary color shading.
General disclaimer: This work is rated NC-17 for nudity, profanity, and substance abuse. Features sensitive topics like mental illness, abuse and trauma. Read at your own discretion.

If it has an interesting story (or is enjoyable to some degree) then sure. The art styles nice and all, but it has to be very breathtaking for me to be invested solely on the art style.

Unsolicited critiques are like being given a plate of veggies. It might not be what you really want, but they're good for you and you should probably eat them.

However, sometimes you just really don't wanna eat your veggies for whatever reason and that's completely valid! But when a chef offers you a plate of veggies and you don't want them, we don't spit in the chef's face. We thank him for taking the time to prepare them but politely explain that you don't want veggies at this time.

Just to be clear, we're really not talking about veggies, right? This would work with fruit, too?

Guys... Can you not? You made your point.

As for me, I think I'd read it no matter the style, story is much more important to me. Both the traditional rough (I think) acrylics look appealing to me, as well as the digital characters. Though I think separately they're more appealing than mixed.
A variety of art styles used in comics is something I really like to see, so by all means go ahead! Don't let the naysayers stop ye

Hey, I wanted to say that I thought this was a very well done and effortful critique.

I, and I think most others on this forum, would have loved to receive such detailed feedback. It's a gift, as it's so rare to have someone put so much time and energy into helping you improve at no benefit to themselves, especially when the person doesn't like your work.

Sure, you could have asked first, but I think Sky-Chau's post implied they were open to criticism. Maybe they didn't realize that because they're new to the forums or because they're autistic, I don't know. But I don't think you were out of line at all. I hope their responses to you don't discourage you from leaving such thoughtful critique for other people in the future. That would be a real shame.

I'm autistic too, and have 39 years of communication problems behind me.

From my experience, I'd say that there is no way communication will improve if one of the sides refuses to make an effort (or worse, try to delete people who mean no harm).

It can be extremely difficult as an autistic person to socialize, because we feel we are constantly doing an effort, and the other ones don't.
But we have to remember that before we tell them that a problem exists, they CAN'T make an effort, even if they are very nice and considerate. And that we cannot ask people for effort if we don't make an effort ourselves. We cannot make considerate people suffer for what inconsiderate people did to us, or for the fact we will always been the ones making more efforts, because the majority of the people we meet don't even know about our issues.

Telling someone simply "No, I won't read it" is rude for the majority of people (even part of the autistic ones). Explaining why makes things less rude, and also give extremely valuable information to the person who asked the question.
No one will by default think it is respectful to just say 'no', and disrespectful to explain why. So, I get that you don't like it, but understand people did it out of respect and not the contrary. If you are not ready to accept that others show you respect in a different way, you cannot possibly expect them to accept you and adapt their behavior to make you more comfortable.

I'm definitely the audience the OP is looking to attract. For the most part, I'm not interested in anime or superhero styles. I'm older than most forum members and there are only two things left in life that still excite me: food (my NY's resolution is to lose weight--curse you cruel gods) and discovering inventive and exciting comics. I love the marriage of words and pictures in unconventional yet moving ways.

My own comic, by Tapas and Webtoon standards, is pretty different in terms of look and tone. It took a lot of trial and error, in fact still trying and erring, to marry the pictures and words in a dramatic way. A lot of art styles look really cool--I love Diebenkorn and Dubuffet, the texture, the depth, the subtle details--but they're difficult to make work for a comic. Comics demand a certain level of clear communication and using texture and expressive paint without enough narrative insight can quickly just look messy or poorly planned.

I applaud the OP for trying to do something different. The problem with different is it is often difficult to pull off well. If it wasn't, more people would chart new creative paths instead of following and incorporating more common techniques and tropes.

I had considered just leaving this thread and not coming back to it because contrary to the first impression people often get of me I don't actually really like conflict. I just wanted to clear the air here.

I am sorry for upsetting the OP with an unsolicited critique. I didn't want to upset anyone, I wanted to be helpful.

From my perspective, I saw research being conducted in a way that was going to result in skewed, unhelpful data. To me, it seemed kind to explain very clearly why this was a problem that needed addressing in order to actually answer the question the OP actually wanted an answer to accurately and so to get the most helpful result, and to assume no prior knowledge of the subject.

I misread the scenario because...well....

Sorry, I'm not neurotypical, and comics are my special interest, and as you can see my special interest level (which the RAADS-R rather too kindly calls "talent" is over nine thousaaaaaaaaaand... okay okay, it's 33. But that's a ridiculously high score) and sometimes my level of passion is just so intense, it doesn't even occur to me that to other people when I turn it on it's like being blasted in the face with a high pressure firehose.

I misjudged the situation and I'm sorry.

Don't apologize. The person asked for input (it's the very title of the topic!). You gave input, and it was well-written, helpful and polite.

You did not misjudge anything. You provided constructive criticism backed with years of actual industry experience. Don't belittle that by apologizing.

No need to apologize, man... er, woman. It was all a misunderstanding that was brought on by miscommunication, don't let it discourage you.

I was actually a little envious of Sky. Getting a super detailed, thoughtful deconstruction of my work, that comes from a place of passion and experience is something I can only dream of.

Btw you're such a nice, level headed person! You could have been a total neanderthal over Sky's response (understandably), but you're really mature and complete cinnamon roll. I don't know who you are, but I have complete respect for you.
Don't mean to be weird about it, seeing mature, thoughtful responses in situations like this is really rare for me. I am kinda gawking.

Looking back it was good crit, i just wasn't expecting to get it. I think on any other day on any other platform I would've been fine.

It was a yes or no question that I expected to get maybe 2 sentences in response. It's not at all your fault for assuming I was asking for the why.

This is all such a hot mess I wanna delete the topics but cant because that's not a thing. I'm genuinely sorry you got the wrath of an RSD tantrum.

I'm gonna leave this forum until March to give this shit time to bury itself and I hope I haven't discouraged you from doing crits in the future.

I think you've come a long way in a couple of days. Don't feel you need to go into exile unless you really want to. At the very least, you brought some excitement to some people who didn't have better New Year's plans.

Hey, no worries, bygones and all that. Every Neurodivergent person sometimes has a meltdown or a wobble at an inopportune time, and the important thing is that we forgive each other and learn from the experience how best to spot our own warning signs and manage ourselves.

I don't think you need to leave til march, like the threads will probably get buried in a week. Should be fine.

Trying to stop me from critiquing comics would be like trying to stop the tide. Have you seen my review thread?5

Don't feel like you have to step away unless that's what's best for you. People will get over it. I'm sorry you weren't treated with more patience and understanding- while I get where both sides werecoming from, I think a lot of people compounded the problem.

If it helps any, there has been way worse drama, tantrums, and other nonesense. This is no big deal, you are fine, and you have every right to participate here.

That said, @ratique can close all the relevant boards for you, so you can have a clean slate. I don't recommend getting mods to close boards any time there's a tiff, but sometimes it helps to let everyone just move on.

I think the ability to laugh at ourselves and own our mistakes is a great life lesson. One we have to learn over and over.
