So, I grew up watching Yu-gi-Oh and Wixoss anime. My God, I love those anime. I also read Mangas with that genre - but I have yet to see a light novel based on it. I can see how it could be difficult because you will have to take your readers through the rules and part of what made the story cool were the visuals.

But would you read a light novel or web novel of a card battle genre? Asking for a friend.

Yeah, tbh. It would be great theatre of the mind when reading a card battle between two people.

Probably not, but that's because I don't think it would be something I'm into

I would give something like that a try, although I'm having a difficult time envisioning whether I would like it or not xD It seems like one of those things you have to see first before deciding! Fwiw I'm both a big fan of playing and watching/reading card games and shows/comics about them. Thus I'm curious to see what the experience without visuals (or interaction, in the case of actually playing games) would be like.

I've read a few and like most of the stories about games I find them... not really engaging.
My writer even proposed me a story like this (he's an old-school MTG player, a very good one too), and I even liked the overall idea, but for the love of me I don't see how it can look cool and be interesting to read. After he proposed me it I went and read/watched some games-related anime and manga and no matter what it is (if it's not some crazy stuff about gambling like Kaiji, Kaiji was cool), I just didn't find it interesting, people slapping cards on the table and everybody around going AAAAHHH LOOK AT THIS MOVE HE JUST DID OH MY GOD and the visuals of the "battles" is just... not my stuff I suppose  maybe if I was 7 :information_desk_person: Maybe I'll change my mind in a few more years :joy:
