A while ago I made a post commenting on how the webcomic Nimona was now getting a movie! I made a comment on how that would be a dream for some creators, but on the thread I got this comment.
But I gotta say, the mindset of "Make a comic so it can become a TV show so it can become a movie!!" bugs the hell out of me. Yeah, it would be awesome to have your work realized as a film! BUT, you see more and more people approaching webcomics as a stepping stone to what they REALLY want, rather than appreciating the medium for what it is. I don't like seeing comics treated as an inferior "first step" to something bigger.
Now that's actually a really good point! And then I saw this quote by Alan Moore
... if you only see comic books in terms of films, then eventually the best we can end up with is films that don't move.
Also true. I think a lot about what it is that books can do that comics can't, or what it is that comics can do that animation can't. Being able to cross over is great (lost of animation directors have dipped their toes in live action), but I'm always wondering what it can mean to tell a story that feels specific to the medium you use.
So what do you think? Do you think your comic would make a good movie, or do you think its living its best life as a comic?
