So I’ve been writing up an outline for a future comic, because I like writing- but I’ve run into a problem. I don’t know how Walmart works :sob:
You may wonder what Walmart has to do with writing. The main character works at a “Walmarket” basically just Walmart. So I’ve been writing the outline in chapters and one of them focuses on his life at work and how the other employees view him, and for part of the plot I wanted one of his coworkers to be forcing him to deal with the more irritating customers- but I don’t know how that would work realistically in a Walmart. Like what would the coworker be doing to achieve this? In what work department would this situation be possible to happen? If this couldn’t happen realistically, would there be some other way to make one of his coworkers put the MC in irritating situations?

If there’s anyone here with experience, knowledge, or insight please give me  my other options are just skip writing that part and get a job at Walmart in the future or watching more random yt videos of some girl chatting about her Walmart drama :sob::sob::sob:

Theres a comedy show called Superstore that pretty much rips on being a walmart employee. Give that a try.

Also, on youtube, Joe Santiago did a series called "people of walmart" that was about wild customers lol

I worked at a retail place before... and I hated being cashier the most. I HATE doing that job so much I'd rather be doing these jobs... and put up with the heat (in the middle of july or August), noise, risk of slipping, getting burned, cut, heavy lifting, weird positions... etc.

Because some of these customers I just... uugh.. 🤬

@kyupol You should try an exterior paint job in 103 degree weather with no wind, shade, or clouds! And your job uniform mandates jeans. Not fun!

@ArtGremlin From what I understand, a situation like this could feasibly happen in almost any Walmart position, but the most common would be as a stocker, cashier, or at the customer service desk. All Walmart employees are expected to be able to answer any and all questions customers may have (even the stupid ones).

If you've worked retail before, it's more of that, only weirder. I'm sure it varies by city and state, but working at Walmart is a uniquely sobering experience. If you're looking for background, horror stories, funny things that happen there, etc, they have a reddit community that's pretty active:

I've worked at Walmart since 2018 while going to college. I can give you some insight. It can be a little bit difficult to make something like you described obvious. Realistically, it is whoever is unfortunate enough to be flagged down that is often times the person who has to deal with the customer. There are a few ways you could make somebody else do the job for you though. For example, in fabrics, when people press the button/ring the bell over and over again, you can already tell they're gonna be obnoxious. The coworker could tell the MC that someone is waiting at the fabrics counter, and if your MC tries to argue against it like, "Can't you do it?" the coworker come up with some random excuse like, "I'm taking care of ___ right now, I can't," even though that task isn't really important/urgent or isn't even a job for that department in the first place (another department's job). This is how we avoid things we don't want to deal with. Similar situations could occur at sporting goods or the paint counter or electronics, but having your MC in those departments might force you to write scenes with more specialized knowledge. Additionally, customers that ask the coworker for help, you can have the coworker play dumb or something and point out the MC as the person who is more knowledgeable about the topic the customer is asking about or is more capable with certain skills or technologies to complete the task they're asking for.
Automotive is also a pretty decent department for doing that kind of crap as well. Lol

Hmmm, I feel like the coworker playing dumb and sending the customer to the MC might be the best fitting option, since I don’t think this store has fabrics or automotive departments

Thank you everyone for your help <3
