I actually thought it was brilliant cramming in Mario Kart since I think out of all of the spin-offs, that's the closest on expanding on lore? Aside from Donkey Kong Country and Yoshi.

I will say this though. People are talking about a post-credit scene... I wouldn't be surprised if it's the Donkey Kong Rap. Seth Rogen pushed for it apparently.

The only good thing that'll come out with these films is the fact that we're most likely going to get a new Donkey Kong game out of it.

I hate Seth Rogen's writing with every ounce of my body and I think he's going to sneak in a weed joke. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Seth Rogen pushes himself to write it or produce it. The TMNT movie trailer was just bad. He didn't write it, but it has his dialogue in the trailer. "AHHHHH I GOT STABBED IN MY LEG! YOU GUYS SEE THAT? I GOT STABBED IN MY LEG! IT'S LITERALLY IN MY LEG! OH... OH WOW... OH YEP! IT'S IN THERE! YOU KIDS LAUGHING YET? THE MUTATED TOAD KID GOT STABBED IN THE LEG. THAT'S RIGHT! I AM ALSO A KID!".

I stopped listening to her a while back. She's... something... I'll say that.

I think if I'm going to listen to anyone it's most likely going to be someone like Arlo (despite me not liking him that much either) or LSMark (again, despite me not liking him that much other... there's only seven critics I like on YouTube lmao).

I wanna see Arlo because like... he's the Nintendo guy. He's going to be brutally honest just like with Sonic. He's been a tad bit cynical about it leading up to the film's release, calling out Miyamoto and all that. LSMark I just want to see what'll happen when he calls out people obsessing over Easter Eggs. Twitter always gets on his back whenever he says the truth about films (like with the Sonic movies). He has a platform and I want him to use it.

ONEYPLAYS tho. They hit it on the head whenever they give their takes on films... especially video game movies. I can't wait for Chris and Zach to talk about it. Their Sonic review was funny af.

You should probably just go watch it with medium expecations. If the movie is great then you will be super happy but if the movie is decent then having medium expectations won't dissapoint you in any way and you will be able to enjoy the movie.

Setting super high expectations is what causes most fans to hate a movie. Like the Resident Evil movies. You can't really compare the movies to the videogames. But if you go with an open mindset you will probably enjoy the movies.

I still might go see it with my niece and nephew but the trailer looks... stupid? Like worse than the Trolls movies for more obscure concept.The only characters who sounded roughly how I imagined them were Princess Peach and Bowser. The only reason I think Bowser works is because Jack Black is a brilliant character actor. Chris Pratt and Seth Rogan really can only do one character

@Katzalcoatl I think I'm going to crank my expectations ULTRA high (despite me hearing reviews already). Like... it's Mario. He's the golden child of the industry and takes things to another level when his name is on something. I feel as though it's a little weird to keep them down when it happens to be something like film? A huge part of my writing philosophy comes from game design where I play back with the audience. It's possible to turn the movie into a game. I dunno. I feel like this was Illumination's opportunity to rival Disney. Sure they got da money, but I worry about films like Zelda or Metroid or DK. I just don't get why film is the one we have to keep our expectations lowered for, y'know?

@aqua03 Also what I want in this movie is what I wouldn't get in a Mario game. I really want them to innovate SO hard here. Nintendo has that mountain of money. If they do stuff we haven't seen in video games before, then I think that philosophy should apply to film. :T

I mean, I get that. I guess the fact that it was just good given both the track record of both Video Game movies (Starting with the original Mario movie from the 1990's coincidentally) and post Despicable Me Illumination is honestly kind of a miracle and should be celebrated.

But then again,I'm a pretty easygoing guy all things considered.

Though I do wish there was just a bit more time to breath and develop things because the movie runs on such a quick pace that sometimes it kinda felt that things would just "happen" without much exposition beyond the bare minimum.

All in all, a solid 7/10 movie in my book. The cinematic equivalent a nice bowl of fettucini alfredo I feel.

I just saw the film and well... I can see why critics don't like this film.

I don't think this film has much to offer to anyone who isn't a huge Mario fan. I feel like things happen in the film and they are never explained because the film makers expect everyone to already know the lore of the games. I didn't feel like there was any build up or atmosphere or "Chekhov's gun", things happen because [insert Mario reference]. And I guess if you like seeing Mario references, then this is the movie for you.

I did like pieces of this film. Bowser was funny, I like what they did with Peach, and the animation was nice. Tho I felt like the movie had pacing issues and I wasn't a fan of the dialogue.

I will give it a 5/10. If you like Mario, it's worth checking out, kids might like it.

Honestly... I'm just going to treat this like one big fan animation. I also found out that Illumination did some last minute changes to the sound track. The "Take On Me" bit was supposed to have this song in:

It's like... yeah. I feel bad for the journalists. Whenever I write, I always have this belief where no matter what, there will always be someone out there who doesn't know the property... I'm happy to have this belief confirmed.

All I can say is I hope they learn from their mistakes... although... I will put this out there. I remember other writers in Cartoon Network having beef with the Teen Titans Go! crew because they refuse to change (the directors were the main developers of the show). I remember this one tweet where this artist was telling them off (I need to find it, it involved the Thundercats Rawr show). They have a big "F you" mentality towards critics so like.... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmMMMMMMmmmmm. Hopefully they can get better... directors for the spin-offs.

I'm also hoping the Zelda film will be it's own little story in the Zelda canon (like that one horrible Assassin's Creed film). Zelda is all about reintroducing concepts to the audience... also it seems like Eji Aonuma cares more about story than Miyamoto (he's the producer for those games).

I found most of the music to be extremely distracting. The only song I liked was the original one from Jack Black. The pop songs just reminded of other movies like Shrek 2 (I need a Hero) or the Kill Bill theme (which I think Minions 2 also used). And the Easter Egg music felt out of place or forced. I sort of wish more of the music was original tracks.

I'm watching the movie in IMAX. This could be one of the best modern classics in recent cinema alongside Belle, Wolfwalkers, RRR, Dune, and The Northman or one of the worst pieces of crap films in recent memory. Could be the former or barely reaching the former as I'll love it no matter what. This is from the guy who's not smart enough to understand the highly overrated Everything, Everywhere All At Once but I understood Tenet. It'll probably be better than Top Gun Maverick.

Thiiiiiis has to be something I need to judge since I'm always a huge fan of how music is integrated into things. From the scenes I've seen, it seems like it's the most appopriate way of using easter eggs (probably one of the best???). Especially watching that Donkey Kong scene with the music edited in. I dunno, I'm a huge fan of sampling and how they add it to the context of the film, so I guess that's the only thing I'm looking forward to should I see this movie. Also music is something you can directly translate from video game to movie like nothing.

@toonben Don't worry, there's nothing smart about Everything, Everywhere All At Once. That movie is bleh.

Been reading this thread and am about to go see it in two hours. Idk what y'all were expecting the movie to be especially from the guys who gave us Minions, Secret Life of Pets, and Sing.. lotta cynicism in here and I'm just like, I just wanna have dumb fun. Like the kind I get while playing Mario games. I'm expecting loud stuff to be used as obnoxious funny gags for children, farts included.

Chris Pratt aside, I think the cast actually seems decent from the trailers. Luigi being the one to save is interesting, and the Mario Kart focus is weird.. but logically it is faster than platforming if they're on a time crunch, I guess. I'm not crazy about the trailer music, I hope it's not like that throughout the whole film, recognizing themes in medleys is gonna get real distracting real fast. The animation looks gorgeous and the 80's throwback promo was fun.

Real talk, I'm not expecting this to be a masterpiece that breaks the video game adaptation curse, like I said- I just want dumb fun from what looks like a 7/10 film. If it delivers on that, I'd be more than happy to watch another film adaptation of another Nintendo game
