You Guys Think the Mario Movie's Gonna Be Any Good?

Impressions are in and all I see are people gushing about easter eggs and fan service. That stuff is cool? But the only serious review I could fine is someone describing every Illuminations film. He also mentioned "Bad music choices". I'm wondering if they are going to put pop-music in? I dunno. That's the only bit that has me skeptical.

I think it's going to be okay by most people's standards, but not necessarily my ideal Mario movie, kind of like how the live action Sonic movies are miraculously fun despite the weird choice of making it live action.

It's okay. I'll always have Super Mario Brothers: The Mission to Rescue Princess Peach. Underrated gem, imo. You kind of have to watch this movie while acknowledging that it was made before certain base things were established about the series (like Luigi wearing green), but otherwise, I feel like it has a nice vibe.

I'm cautiously optimistic. It's looking pretty good the more I see of it, so fingers crossed.

Also Chris Pratt isn't that bad as Mario.... I like how they're going for a more "Brooklynn Everyman" vibe akin to the old cartoons for him in all honesty.

I think it'll be fine. It doesn't look like something that I'd be wanting watch over, and over again, and, as bit of an aside, the humour seems little "modern" to me, if that makes any sense, but I'm feeling, as @aqua03 said, "causitously optimistic."

I thought Minions 2 was OK. I think the thing with Illunination is that their stuff is for kids. Compared to Disney or Dreamworks which tends to make stuff for the whole family.

I get the feeling that the Mario movie is going to be a kid's movie and that is ultimately going to be what bothers adult fans. It might fall into a similar boat as the Pikachu or Sonic movies. Are they amazing 10/10 films? No. Do kids like them? Yes.

As I grow older, I'm starting to understand the importance of throwing the parent a bone since they're paying like... $20 or $30 to watch this. You also have an opportunity to give the two something to bond over about. It sucks that Mario is going the key jiggling direction... but I get it. The last Mario movie didn't do so well and that was a lot darker.

I pray to GOD that Nintendo fans won't go crazy at other fans for asking for more plotwise.

It doesn't help that Mario is not a very emotionally complex character. I will say, at least with Sonic, he is established as being hyper, childish, and a show off. Mario....well he jumps on goombas. That's fine for a video game but for a film, I am not sure how they are going to give him depth.

Honestly, it just looks like they had a checklist of animated kids movie story beats and made a movie out of that. I think most of the internet’s positive response has just been inflated by the “video game adaptation curse” still being fresh in the zeitgeist’s mind, especially in relation to Mario. “It looks like how the movie ‘should’ look like.” Is a hell of a more compelling angle when expectations are low (and a vocal chunk of the fans have a persecution complex).

Like, the trailers play up the reveal of the titular Super Mario World like you’re being magically transported to a place you always wanted to jump into. Meanwhile, the actual nostalgic memories I have of the setting are of destroying my younger sibling in the multiplayer mode of New Super Mario Bros. A projection of whimsy where there was actually bloodlust.

It’s all very cynicism inducing for me. I’ll admit that I haven’t been in the age range for these types of movies in a long time. I have no intent of seeing it. I know my parents are probably blissfully ignorant about it...

Yet I exist on a side of the internet where the Mario movie is relevant...

Will it be a good movie for kids? YES.

Will it be a good movie in general? NO.

Will it be a good movie for Mario Fans? Probably not but they will refuse to accept the truth due to nostalgia. Just like how it happened in the new star wars trilogy.

The new star wars trilogy was great for kids but the movies were not good in general. And many star wars fans refused to accept it since nostalgia hit them super hard.

Another good example of a not so great movie is "Mummies" it was pretty generic and it would have been a hit in the early 2000's. But for today's standards it followed the overused formula of Rich bored girl meets boy who has a trauma. They end of falling in love after fighting a generic bad guy, etc, etc. Don't get me wrong it was a great movie for kids but as a movie in general it was bad since it was nothing new.

from what's been shown between trailers and general promotion i feel like i could still go in any direction but honestly the only thing i'm looking forward to is the visuals, since that's just a general strength of illumination, and then hearing the voices of keegan michael key, jack black and charlie day

whether they use pop music imo is no big deal since the sonic movie did so pretty well and i enjoyed it overall and the same with detective pikachu. but with this i think there's a variety of different audiences for this one film who may not all be appeased with whatever the final product is going to be

like i feel that anyone who's played the mario rpg games or anything from the paper mario series may have expectations in terms of story quality, and hell maybe even mario rabids fans(?), and more general/casual i guess fans looking for game references and then (what i feel is the true target audience) kids who obviously have some expectation but mostly are just happy to see their fave video game characters on the big screen

i think that's why it's always funny to me when movies like this come out coz you've got the old nostalgia crowd and then kids and everyone else in between with wildly varying opinions but i think it's just gonna be best to wait and see

Yeah but... Paper Mario... and Mario RPG... and Mario & Luigi. Even the Rabbids games are well written which is a shock to me since that has a more illumination thing going on. Main protags don't exactly need depth as long as you figure out an angle.

@AxemanRifflord I rolled my eyes at the trailer song with the Mario movie, I know what you're talking about lol.

@Katzalcoatl Haven't seen the movie, but there's nothing wrong with not doing anything new. It depends on execution (speaking as someone who loves stuff like Dragon Quest).

It'll be another easily forgettable kids film similar to a Boss Baby or a Minions flick. Nothing offensively bad. Might be a laugh or two in there. But then it will immediately leave your memory like it was the Silence from Doctor Who.

No not really. In the first place, Mario should sound Italian. Not like how Chris Pratt’s doing it. The animation looks solid though. Also, the fact that Mario is going to rescuing his brother instead of Princess Peach as is usually the case?

I’m thinking it will be about as good as the Lego Movie, which is good enough for me I suppose. I can’t imagine it will have the emotional pull of Lion King or Spirited Away.

I think it looks good. If the next Mario movie is live action I think Mario should still be cg sort of what SEGA has done to the Sonic. From the trailer look good to me.

Kids will love it, it will not be a classic that people will watch in 10 years.

I don´t like his voice.

It looks great but digital animation will still always look like video game stuff for me,
the part that I skip to play the game.

I wish the producers/writers of those movies would be a bit more brave/creative with
their ideas for the plot but 1) I´m not the target audience and 2) they are not able
to expirement

They can still do a great movie for all ages like "Sonic" or better yet "Wreck-it Ralph". I can't say I have high expectations of Mario movie though.

My point is there are great kid movies out there which adults can very much enjoy. Writers haven't really done a great job lately in that department but I still have hopes.

Oh man it's gonna be great. I've been psyched since the casting choice was announced. On that subject, it seems really weird the internet out of nowhere started to DESPISE Chris Pratt around this time, mostly due to his religion.

It's gonna be an Illumination movie (which is, let's be real, not bad, but not the best) but they know that for this movie they NEED to lean into the fanservice, which is what I'm entirely about. The previews have shown SO MUCH faith to the video game series. I haven't been this excited for a movie in...Ever?
