I struggle with figuring out target audiences a lot when I'm writing Redwinter. The story is of course dictated by my own interests and mannerism, and that leads to some weird dichotomies. There's little swearing, but the only cuss anyone seems to know is "fuck." I'm tackling transgender and LGBTQ themes, but in a way that requires some foreknowledge and isn't informational for people who are extremely new to those issues (at least I think so, I'd love feedback on that particular issue if anyone is interested and willing).
I think target audiences are for me a search for like minded people who will laugh and enjoy the same weird amalgamation of tropes that I do. I'd hate to ever put that behind an age barrier because I remember getting a lot of value out of "above my age range" works that I read in my early teens like Battle Angel Alita and Berserk. I'm writing a cosmic horror story that's also kind of funny; how violent can it be and how terrifying can it get while still being somewhat readable by younger audiences who want something a little creepier, especially on the net where everyone can read everything? That said I can't help but feel that I've closed off my work to any kind of future publication (har har, funny joke) through official channels because of the slight cussing even though it's the kind of entertainment that I feel the 13-20 crowd might really like.
I also remember playing the fourth Resident Evil game when I was 14 and being unable to sleep for a few nights so maybe that's for the best.
