First one that comes to mind would probably be Kubo and the Two Strings. It's really fascinating how much effort went into making that film and it's a pretty enjoyable watch. I also loved one of the reveals that came about halfway into the film. Thought it was done very well.

Also special shout out to the animated Resident Evil movie, "RE: Damnation." That is some good dumb fun that I can get behind.

• Mary & Max
  It's an adult film without being that type of "raunchy adult film". The characters have such great depth and some people say this film makes them cry.

• Nocturna
  Probably the most underrated animated film. It has amazing aesthetics and pulls influences from Ghibli and Tim Burton.

• Spirited Away
  It's all around beautiful

• The Princess and the Cobbler
  Maybe some of the greatest handdrawn animation in a film. It's so smooth. Also watch the uncut version.

• The Prophet
  Some of the greatest european animators came together to make an adaption of Kahili Gibran work. And it is goddamn amazing.

Honorable mentions...
- Trolls - It's really cute and very positive
- Corto Maltese in Siberia - Because it's goddamn Corto Maltese
- The Triplets of Bellville - it's an arty farty film about kick ass grannies

OMG so many! But I guess instead of listing all my faves I'll list the one I haven't seen here.

Cat's Don't Dance.

Okay look like, this isn't the hieght of amazing storytelling but the animation and humor in it is supurb. The film makes viscous fun of classic golden age hollywood, including making a Shirley Temple knockoff a hilarious villain.

It's simple, and it talks about some really heavy topics in a creative way. Also, the music rivals some of the best in Disney's golden age.

Most of my favorite animated films aren't even Disney!

My number 1 favorite would have to be Guardians Owls of Ga'hoole
because I'm an owl fanatic and the main lead is a barn owl (barn owls are my favorite) plus the animation is just so stunning. I know it's 3D and all but you can see how much work they put into every little detail.

Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron
I love the story and the music. The song "Get off of my back" performed by Bryan Adams reminds me of the time I used to get picked on in school and then finally I just snapped and stopped taking crap from other people.

How to Train You Dragon 1&2
(Though I kinda like the second movie a little bit more.)

Wolf Children
My God this one made me cry so badly. Granted one scene kinda made me cringe a little and those who have seen the movie probably know what scene I'm talking about.

A Silent Voice (Koe No Katachi)
This one made me feel the feels pretty bad too xD I cried.
Even those who aren't into anime I still strongly recommend watching this movie, it's a
story about a boy and a deaf girl he used to bully when they were children and now he is trying
to make amends to her.

Edit: Rise of the Guardians How could I forget this one!
The animation for this one was pretty stunning too but not as much as Ga'hoole in my opinion.
Back in high school my fellow artist friends and I made these crack guardians or rejected guardians and it was the funniest thing ever to us.

I remember watching Ga'hoole for the first time. I thought it would be silly but as it went on I was like "WOW this is like lotr but with owls!"
I enjoyed my time with it.

The Cat Piano
A short that will leave you unraveled and curious. The animation direction is simple but intense in some areas and the story fascinating on top of fantastic narration. Reminds me of old school Noir. A bit unnerving in context just as a warning.

Pretty much anything from the school Gobelins
This is a student film and it isn't the only one of this caliber. This one in particular is a tad nsfw just as a heads up!

Rise of the Guardians
Got heavily overlooked and there was a massive drama fit over this back in the day. Storywise can be a bit wishy washy but the animation is extremely detailed and stunning. If you want snow that is insanely better then Frozen - Watch this.

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas
Old school Dreamworks back when they were finding their footing with 2D mixed with 3D. A bit cheeky due to that but worth it just from the animation on the villian's hair ALONE. Look at this shit and tell me otherwise.

Mune
Plot is a tad generic! However the art direction makes me cry.

Rock and Rule
Need a very clearly 80s film? Here you are. Pink Floyd's the Wall meets 80s fantasy and sci-fi full force. The trailer is a mess so have this instead.

Secret of Nimh
I'm startled there's not more Don Bluth up in here. He's probably the reason behind the disney renaissance [it's theorized at least].

An American Tail: Fieval Goes West
i actually liked the sequel more as a kid then the first whoops

Summer Wars
An all time favorite. Same creator of Wolf Children so his style is apparent.

I've got plenty more recommendations, including some old school Asian films and such, but I think I've posted enough for now.

I'm surprised Sword of the Stranger isn't on here! I absolutely love the simplicity of the movie, how honorable the main character is through out the film, and just how beautiful the sword fights are especially with the amazing sound track is. It's one of those movies that really gives me goosebumps whenever I watch it. Then again I'm a huge sucker for samurai's (I even use a samurai deck in the Duel Links game ;p)

If people want more obscure non-disney animated films...

• When the Wind Blows
  This film is depressing as hell but it's anti-nuclear war commentary really hits the nail on the head.

• $9.99
  A surreal and very weird film but worth watching

• Wrinkles
  A bitter sweet film. The English dub changes a bunch of stuff tho...I also don't like this trailer.

• Piano no Mori
  The manga is great and this adaption sort of has a leg up due to it having the music.

• The Little Prince
  The stop motion parts are gorgeous. The cg part is a bit odd but the films uses it to pull their own interruption of the story.

• Steamboy
  I like this film more than Akira...sue me

THIS MOVIE IS AMAZING. The art is beautiful, the movie is about Irish folk lore (I'm Irish) but everything is explained in the movie so you don't need to be an expert. Also Ben, the main character reminds me of Toon Link.
