I'm a comic book artist who really enjoys fan art and fan fiction. Fan fiction is the joy of a community taking something and expanding on it beyond the creators' wildest dreams.

"Bernard of Chartres used to compare us to dwarfs perched on the shoulders of giants. He pointed out that we see more and farther than our predecessors, not because we have keener vision or greater height, but because we are lifted up and borne aloft on their gigantic stature."

Hand on. What do you define as "trace"? As in: What do you physically do that constitutes tracing. In recent years, I've seen the definition change online. What I know as "copying" (using a reference photo and recreating its elements free hand) keeps being referred to as "tracing", all of a sudden…

You're welcome. I hope they help as much as they helped me. Those are beautiful landscape pants. Especially the ocean. I haven't gotten into drawing/ painting water so this should be fun as a new challenge.

Sorry for using this link: That is my most favorite background that I have done. I decided to approach out through digital painting and looked up YouTube tutorials. Don't underestimate YouTube tutorials. This is the tutorial I followed: Another great tutorial for backgrounds (especially i…

I've struggled with this, too. So now I've remembered the objective of social media for me and you already mentioned them: 1) To keep in touch with your fans; and 2) To promote your work The important think is your product - your comic. There is no point keeping in touch with fans and promoting …

No problem. I don't have an iPad - I use an old and struggling Galaxy Note 2012 model. Poor little fella - he's like the little engine that could. It doesn't have to be digital during your breaks. Good ol' pencil/ pen and paper also helps. You can do thumbnails and rough sketches on paper and ge…

@Kittosaurus, working during breaks has been the most productive aspect of my comic, for me. About 90% of my comic is drawn at work during my lunch breaks. Going home has too many distractions because you have chores and responsibilities to do there. @DrSketchLines, @borzoiteeth made a good point …

I've come across this tip, just last week, and just starting to implement it.

That's a very noble motivation. I have not levelled up to that one, yet. Perhaps too overwhelmed by surviving through life to take up such an outlook and ideology. I imagine, after my watch over this little human that give me joy is done, I will graduate to the point of wishing to impart what I ha…

Thanks to everyone for the responses. Very insightful inputs. "Am I drawing because I have fun doing it or am I drawing because I like to please people?" Good take away and tough question to ask oneself - but it must be asked.

I recently made a liberating admission to myself, regarding my art and (especially) my comic that I'm working on. I've been working on a Mass Effect fancomic and have reached Chapter 5. I kept trying to keep up with the "Update frequently and consistently" mantra and was so obsessed with meeting d…

In the words of "Jazza" in one of his videos: Own your style. It comes down to honesty with yourself. If you can look at the work and, with complete honesty, say to yourself "I am happy with it", then go ahead and stick with it and let it evolve naturally. There may come a day that you think "Le…
