Stretching more often than not it ends up being bad, that's its contrived becomes too apparent I can name a few examples lol If the writer puts heart in it it can work, if its just to complete something before the deadline without any concern for the story/characters it will most likely become bad

I think first impressions are important because our instinct/intuition operates on that. Sort of a fight/flight response morphing into deciding whether X is friendly/unfriendly based on first impression and should be approached or not.
