Oh, mj, please, please, please include Groovy, Kinda, won't you? Thanks so much!
I have my own website too: www.groovykinda.org On my site I post my comic in strip form, and here on Tapastic, I break it up for scrolling. It's interesting to see the two formats. Each one has its on strengths and weaknesses. "I, Mummy," does the same.
Nope. The story is far more important than the art. Yes, the art is important. No question. Comics are a combination of art and writing. But it's the writing that holds the reader. I've seen beautiful comics that are a joy to look at, and boring as heck. Some of my favorite comics don't have the g…
I own a used bookstore in a small town in Washington State, and I've worked in my local library for 16 years. Both great jobs. It keeps me around book lovers, and gives me lots of inspiration.
I still go back to my old Betty and Veronica comics. They're marvels in pacing, layout, expression, and simplicity. Great stuff. Another creator described Groovy, Kinda as "Archie Comics for adults." I was very flattered. Right now I'm plowing through "SPQR Blues," a soap opera set in Ancient Rome. …
Because I'm more visual, I sort of storyboard. When I script a comic I block out the panels and put the dialogue in and a rough sketch of what it should look like. Then when I re-write I can move things around. Really though, there's now right or wrong way to do it. Whatever works for you.
When I'm writing, I need music without lyrics (too confusing), so I mostly listen to classical or the soundtrack from King Kong (the original). When I'm pencilling I like faster stuff, but, since I'm getting burned out on my rock and roll (mostly 60s-80s), lately I've been getting into ragtime and d…
I update twice a week, and I haven't had a buffer in over a year. I'd love to have one, but it's impossible for me. If you're just getting started, a month or so is good, I think.
I drew a 6 issue series for Aeon/MU comics back in the 90s, "Blue Moon: The Adventures of Lyssa and the Pirates," and a few anthropomorphic comics, and two NSFW comics for XXXenophile Presents. Then nothing much until about 3 years ago when a friend tried to get me to draw a comic for him. It didn't…
I do each script as a series of thumbnails so I can see where everything goes. Then, if I have time, I let it sit and think about it. Then I make a couple more drafts before I finally sit down to draw.
I own a used bookstore and I've worked in my local library for 16 years now. I love books.
I'm gonna pass. I'm already pencilling and inking a minimum of 60 ink drawings a month with my current strip. It does sound like fun though!
Comics are slowly gaining more acceptance (here in the U.S. anyway). Every time a "Persepolis" hits the bestseller list, or "Maus" gets assigned in another high school class, comics gain respectability. There's a new generation of readers who've grown up with webcomics, comic book movies, manga, …
