5 fun facts about your comic/Novels

My current ongoing webnovel is Spiral Knights: Project R. There's quite a few fun tidbits behind the scenes, but the 5 I want to share the most are:

It's based on the MMORPG by the same name, Spiral Knights, but while it follows many of the same checkpoints in the story from the game, I strive to make my novel as unique and a very different experience compared to the game.
Because it's a video game that only got limited updates, it really only looked at very specific aspects of the world to build, so I've built much of the world myself. That said, many missions are similar to the game, but I've made sure that everything gets a twist!
The majority of my characters that are not based on NPCs from the game are instead based on actual players that I got to know during my 1000+ hours playing. Their armor/outfits and weapons are based on what I recall them using the most as well!
My current webnovel is what I consider to be at least the third book in the series; I wrote a bit of book one a couple years ago, and this summer decided to pick up where I felt I should have been in my writing despite not actually having written any of the novel in so long. This is in large part because of my brother, who was there to enjoy the game along the way with me, and also because I wanted to write what I felt would be the most fun and the (currently) most thought out part of my series.
My favorite NPC in the game just exudes a commanding presence, but he is only ever talked to a handful of times throughout the game, so he's an example of just one character in my novel that I plan on writing a ton about. There's just so much of the ingame universe I wish to explore, from the world it takes place in to the characters that get little to no time of day in the original game. I wish to remediate this by writing everything out myself, but after 100 pages into this book, I can safely say I'm not even half way done with what I have planned for it, to say nothing of books one and two that I've yet to write, and the others that will eventually follow.
Getting so far in my novel has gotten me to commission a piece of art for the first time! It was a worthwhile investment into bringing an impactful visualization to one of my characters, and I plan on making commissions for the rest of the main characters.

First of all, thanks for bringing up mirroring @Headypigeon4180. I've been meaning to do that and keep waffling about it, but this is gonna give me the swift kick in the pants I needed to do it.

Anyway, 5 fun facts about Big Dead Energy:

The title started out as a placeholder I was using because I thought it was funny. I promised my beta reader I was going to find a different, more serious title, but despite having a list of about fifty candidates, I never found a better one. So, BDE it is. I feel like the incongruence of the cover and the title sets you up for the tonal whiplash that this novel can be.
All the names are Slavic, and there are a lot of Slavic elements, but the setting is not based on any real Slavic country. The locales are based on places all over the world. The flora, fauna, geography, and climate of Veliko are based more on Central Texas than anywhere else.
The Slavic influence is mostly because I have a degree in Russian Lit. I really like the levels of formality you get built into Slavic names, and the rules about who can address whom by what name really help convey the rigid hierarchies of volshebnik society. Iyu does not have a Slavic name because I named him before I named anyone else or built out much of the world. I built his backstory around his incongruous name rather than the other way around.
I wrote BDE and its sequel (which also has a completed draft, though I'm still tinkering with some things in it) in about a year total, no break between drafts. That's the fastest I've ever completed a novel, which is even more remarkable when you consider that this is by far the longest pair of novels I've ever written. Together, they're 500,000 words. Brevity may be the soul of wit, but long-windedness is the soul of... me. No, I promise, lots of stuff happens! It's not all blathering and navel-gazing.
The names and lots of food and other cultural elements are Slavic, but I started taking Chinese classes while I was writing it, so you can find a lot of Chinese influences in the story, too. It's a happy coincidence that both cultures are very into tea. Everyone in this story drinks tea constantly—except for the main character, who hates tea.

1- It was originally a He-Man 2002 fanfic based on an episode that I felt wasted a chance at doing something different in He-Man lore and developing its characters. I have been scripting Psychoborg since before my first webcomic (like I said, it was a fanfic first) and have been refining it again and again to get it where it is now.

2- Psychoborg actually takes place in my editor's universe not mine and follows its laws of magic, physics and more. This universe is called the Twistverse. In fact, the planet Zeal has made a cameo in one of his comics.

3- Psychoborg is the first and so far only webcomic that will have a sequel. While I have come to realize that like Walt Disney, I don't like doing sequels because I would rather divert my energy towards new projects, this one is the exception because like all things in the Twistverse, Psychoborg is a story that serves as a piece of a much larger puzzle kind of like how the MCU (when it was good) did.

4- It's also my first adult series, but it definitely won't be my last. The next comic after will also be for adults. The one after that will be more lighthearted and it will be food themed like Cupcake War Machine was.

5- There are elves in my story, but they aren't all the same. You have Star Elves (the type Rebecca is) whose culture and society mirrors Judaism, Sun Elves (the type the Imperial family of Luminous are) whose culture mirrors ancient Egypt and has hints of the USA, and Moon Elves (the type Castor is) whose culture mirrors Great Britain and Christianity specifically Catholicism.

The comic takes place between the years 1896 to 1898.
It takes place in Southeast England. In the fictional seaside town of Smelton. Abundant in copper in the cliff side.
Elsie was influenced by several works “War of the Worlds,” the novels and adaptations of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Doctor Jekkel and Mister Hyde and heavily influenced by the Canadian mystery show “Murdoch Mysteries”
Elsie, Rosemary and Roy are English and Ernest is Irish.
The comic was inspired by a painting by Claude Monet. “Lady With a Parasol” I then came up with the concept of “Steampunk Superhero” I worked on it ever since.

Here's some fun facts.

1) Fourthly Puzzled was originally released as something a little different back in November 2020, which I made 8 webcomics on Deviantart in the span of a couple months, and the font was comic sans, but I've been working through some more concepts and redesigning, until it became the Fourthly Puzzled as we know today.

2) Originally my first webcomic series was Wild Critters Dream, but them when I looked back into it, but then I had this thought that it wasn't working out, as it did feature a band with anthropomorphic animals from the first comic, but I moved on and went on with two of the webcomics I went with to this very day.

3) Human Yet Hybrid was originally titled Puppy and Pepper, and it features Edwina (Originally named Puppy (A genderswap character I created back in 2017.) and Preston, (Or Pepper has he was and is still referred to as,) And Edwina was originally wasn't a sorcerer in the original story. But then I want to give Edwina a little more of an edge, and change some elements along with adding a best friend Ida.

4) Originally, before I know how to design humans, Fourthly Puzzled was gonna be featured as tiques like how I designed from Human Yet Hybrid's first four comics, and my storytime animations, but I wanna challenge myself and try and design them differently, and turned them into the human beings they are now.

5) Since I have the fascination of mythical creatures of myth and folklore, I wanted to add those kind of elements to Human Yet Hybrid so Edwina can have something to fight off or befriend along her journey.

Once I realized that WHITE OUT was a pretty boring idea, I scrapped it and began revamping it. I realized that Chirin's past was actually more interesting than his "future", so I began brainstorming that concept a bit more. Chirin was actually first born as a side character named "Matthew" for a small project I was working on. For some reason, I ended up really getting attached to this character, and this character ended up splitting into Chirin, and another character.
I decided to write BLACK OUT in a playstyle esque style because I wanted to experiement with writing in a faster, more dialogue heavy way. After the positive feedback I got on it, I decided to stick with it. I still think it's a bit weird sometimes, but oh well...
Chirin, the main character, has gone through MANY redesigns... Here's the first time I've ever drawn him...

Now compare that to my most recent drawing of him (3 years difference!!) ...

Basically... He's changed A LOT.

This sounds like fun!
Been writing mine for a while so it's got a lot of weird history behind it.

1) Most of the characters started life as part of a Dragonball fanfic. Little remains of that connection, though the character Kukui's shapeshifting is because, in her original conception, she went to the same school as Ooolong and Puar.

2) The series was initially much longer and had way more characters. But when I opted to purge the script of a lot of the unnecessary or downright bad ideas, some characters got folded into each other. The character Shu from the latest chapter is a composite of 3 characters; her appearance and name from one, her abilities from another, and her alcoholism and fighting style from a third.

3) I hate drawing feet and struggle with toes, which is why all the shoes look so bulbus.

4) The series was initially called Raiden Legacy, in fact you can find old drafts still under that name. I changed it after it didn't test well to Raikiri, meaning lightning cutter, named after the sword in Japanese mythology and shares it with the clan of mercenaries the story focuses on.
Raiden Legacy still plays a role in the story; Raiden is the name of the energy that gives the characters their powers, and a Raiden Legacy is unique or unusual powers passed down through generations.

5) The series' two main characters initially never met! Fuyumi took the role of main character initially but was going to die halfway through. Natsumi was a lost sister sent to our world for her protection, and the rest of the characters would enrol in her school to protect and train her until they returned to their own world.
Fortunately, I decided that fridging my lead character and swapping her out for a completely different one partway through and turning it into a freaking Isekai plot was too stupid, even by my standards. Ultimately the bond between the sisters is the focus for most of the series, but it's weird when you consider how it used to be.

Bonus 6) Someone on my animation course once asked me if the character Keanu was a self-insert. My response was, "I hope not. I wrote him to be an asshole."

Chapter 13 is currently going up in chunks every 5 days, so please check it out and see if it's your kind of story.

The exterior of Thomas Bowdler Junior High School is similar to the one I went to.
The faculty are all named for actors who played villains in the 1960s Batman TV show. Frank Gorshin's Riddler was my favorite, so I named the principal after him.
Katrina's design (her hat in particular) was inspired by Eudora, a lesser-known character from Peanuts.
I thought about making Terry and Katrina boyfriend and girlfriend when I was ironing out the story. The idea clashed with their characters—Terry is extremely girl-shy and Katrina has a low opinion of the male sex—so it was dropped.
Mike's filmmaking hobby in chapter 10 was based off animator/filmmaker Terry Gilliam. Even the bit about Barbie dolls—in 1965 he produced a photographic comic for a satirical magazine about a man who becomes disturbingly infatuated with a Barbie doll (portrayed by his future Monty Python cohort John Cleese!)

1 my story was originally supposed to be steampunk
2 my main character, Emilia, was originally supposed to be a human-like robot
3 the story changed a lot and is a very different story then it originally was supposed to be
4. The First Arc of my story was supposed to be three chapters originally, not two
5. Leo’s Heterochromia was a very random, last minute desicion

1 - Jethuun has had multiple changes in his design in his earliest stages.

2 - Technically, Gluttonous is currently in its 3rd volume, but only on its first on TAPAS.

3 - There is a written book of Gluttonous: The Devil's Mistake that was...a mistake...

4 - Our novels are all connected in the same universe, so this battle could actually happen.

5 - Each story intentionally has different art styles, representing that we all see ourselves differently.

I'll do another, this one for my current (and currently updating) series, Finding Daecon's Way:

1: Finding Daecon's Way is my first work of fiction and is based on childhood dreams/daydreams about sprouting wings and flying

2: The main character Daecon's name was originally going to be Hunter, and the story was just going to be called "Hunter". Halfway through writing it I decided that I didn't like the name and changed it to Daecon. The name of the series was changed to Finding Daecon's Way because I wanted it to reflect the personal growth that Daecon experiences (at the beginning of the story he starts out as a rich, arrogant, and utterly rudderless man with no direction in life - he is simply existing).

3: The first word in the book is "Shit". Daecon is being attacked and assaulted and realizes he is in trouble, and that is how we are introduced to him: In mid attack. Originally the first word was F--K but I dialed it back a bit. (I should note that I mean the first word in Chapter 1, not the character intros or anything preceding)

4: All of the royal clan character names begin with the letter D. I don't know why I picked D (probably because of Daecon) but I wanted family names to be similar: Grandfather Dontarion, father Darion, son Daecon. This is probably influenced by LOTR (Gimli son of Gloin)

5: The first book of Finding Daecon's Way is almost fully published (the final chapter is scheduled to go live in late November) but there is another book being written right now that continues the story and will close it out. There is a third book planned as well but it will be a sci-fi AU version with the same characters but a completely different setting/plot (think mid-future, say 50 years out, and instead of shapeshifters, biological androids).

6: Bonus fact: Even as the final chapter is near publication there are several things that I want to change about the story. Not major things, just details such as eye colours and maybe a bit more detailed account of Daecon immediately before the main events start to happen.

1- Luca Vincenzo is based on Conor Mcgregor and Sanji from one piece. Conor Mcgregor because the mindset of someone that is successful and ends up spiraling out of control is somewhat interesing to me and Sanji because I hate his character.

2- The story is based in an exact replica of the real world only with supernatural being existing in the background.

3- Majority of the main cast are not meant to be examples but rather as morally flawed individuals that grow in someway.

4- The first antagonist of the series would actually be considered as a good person in real life but we wanted to write the protagonist as the villain there to flip it on its head.

5- Three factions serve as a power balance in the series world, namely the GMCO, the Mafia and the Vincenzo Family

1) while on webtoon i'm just on 62 reader after a few years, in less than one i've reached 150 on Tapas.
2)The temple were ChiLiang and others lives is fictional, but the place (Mount Hua) is known to be a sacred mountain in China.
3)Magic is well used and accepted in many nations that have differents gods, but in Euroe and wherever Christianity rules no one is able to use it anymore. Firstly because is forbidden, secondly because there's no actual deity to ask for help.
4)Fiammetta's dresses are all sanctified in order to not let them burn.
5)Differently from WuKong, ChiLiang eat everything , being cooked or raw.

1.) This story was inspired by Code Lyoko season 4. More specifically when William became a herald for X.A.N.A. so to speak.

2.) This story is in an alternate universe from the main continuity I’ve designated Earth 33.

3.) This story has been in the works since 2020.
4.) This will be the last series that uses traditional art. All future comics I produce will be digital

5.) The main character in the story is a good guy in the main continuity

My webcomic (Outcasts) is mainly inspired by novels/books that I wrote when I was younger. I've kept a lot of the same elements (characters' names, powers/abilities, etc.). I'm just a very visual person and wanted to improve my art + my storytelling skills!
The main character (Grace) in Outcasts is actually based on an old drawing I drew in my sketchbook when I was trying to improve my character design/poses. While I've made a few modifications to her design, she's still the same OC.
The fact that Grace and Gabe are twins is somewhat inspired by the TV show, Gravity Falls, and their contrasting personalities (Grace is an adventurous extrovert & Gabe is more of an introvert) are based on the 'opposite-personality twin' trope.
Josh and his "big-brother personality/responsibilities" is both based on the 'big-brother' stereotype as well as acting as somewhat of a parental figure for Grace, Gabe, and Dustin. (Dustin is also based on the youngest-sibling stereotype, but I try to keep it as close to reality as possible).
The main purpose of this webcomic (the passion or purpose behind it) is to show that we all have our own special gifts, whether it be art, writing, etc. (This is where the Myers kids' magical powers come into play; the powers are, quite literally, their special gifts). I want people to know that it's okay to be a little different, and we shouldn't judge people based on their quirks. There's a reason this webcomic is called Outcasts.

Love the idea of this thread!

I wrote the outline while working as an Assistant Language Teacher in Japan.
It's not a true isekai! It's set in a fantasy world that the characters live in except a hero from another world comes there.
The main character's name means black in Japanese, but it's really just a fun way to say "crow" like the bird he was named after. It's a fun opposite to the isekai hero, Shiro.
It's inspired by how all my D&D campaigns went. I play the well intentioned hero and more often than not I end up causing a whole lot of trouble.
The world they live in is medieval in setting, but has a mixture of Asian and American cultures in their towns. Hence why they have a lot of Japanese inspired dishes.

1) The war in Blue Eagle, Cricket Prince is based on the conflict between Han Dynasty China and the Xiongnu (Mongol) Confederation. I got inspired by an article I was reading about different forms of empire (I study archaeology).
2) Khojin's scars (yep, the ones on his face), aren't actually from a fight.
3) Zhisen's xiao guan (the gold headwear) belongs to his deceased brother.
4) The characters of Zhisen's name (智森) mean "wisdom" and "forest." He's not a forest-y person— his mother had a similar character in her name, so that's where he gets it from.
5) When I was thinking of how to name the book, I walked past a bookstore showcasing Marlon James' book Black Leopard, Red Wolf, and liked that title structure. So I came up with metaphors to represent the main narrators, and here we are!

5 facts about "Signs Point to Bobbie":

After launching this March, it's already reached over 230 subs, 26k views, and 1k likes on Tapas!
I created the characters around 9 years ago, except for Gabriel who was created maybe 3 years ago or so.
All of the ASL shown in the series is researched by me to make sure it is as accurate as possible. I've even learned some ASL through drawing it, though I was learning a bit before too.
"Signs Point to Bobbie" is my first webcomic, and my second full-length comic project (the first was a comic book made for my BFA thesis).
These characters were originally supposed to be side characters in a different story. I scrapped that story because well, it wasn't great lol. I scrapped the old main character too. And years later here we are!

So, here's a few fun facts about my novel:

1 - Addai, during his first outline, had a terrible red-flag personality
2 - It was going to be a dark story, but I changed my mind and turned it a lot lighter
3 - The series are a minor part of my other work that I'm reviewing and reshaping. This especific novel is more mature and... dark. So Complex Love is the sunny side lol
4 - I like to study emotions in writing and I apply some of my researches on my texts
5 - I'm a brazilian author (and sometimes I do struggle with English lol) - um dia ainda coloco a novel traduzida ou no Tapas mesmo ou no Wattpad hehe
