When I saw the Tapas Action-Fantasy Tourney get announced, I'd thought it would be for either Action or Fantasy stories; I didn't realize that Action-Fantasy was a thing all its own! Made me wonder, just how much fantasy does an action series need, or how much action does a fantasy series need, to be considered action-fantasy? I guess writing a story is one way to find out!

My web-novel entry for the tourney is "The Herald of Death" (originally titled "The Herald of Death Doesn't Want to Kill"), and it follows a freshly graduated teenager who gets sent to another world without warning, explanation, or guidance. He's just there, and he has to quickly get his bearings and figure out who must have summoned him and why.

I wondered the same, but I think any amount of either can qualify you for it. You can sway to either one more, like mine does toward Fantasy, but it’s a fun way to aproach the genres together, I think ^^

Mine deal with a city in a world of fantasy, and the elf tasked with defending it, even when everyone hates her. There is action, but also long conversation about their world, and about overcoming trauma. Hope that speak to somebody

Here's my story. The chapters alternate between action and character dialogues/flashbacks.

Murat, the unremarkable second son of a tribal chieftain in the highlands, lives in the shadow of his renowned elder brother Temur. No one expects much of him and he spends most of his time daydreaming.

On the eve of Temur’s wedding, when Murat is returning from a trip to the lowlands with a gift he bought for his brother, he encounters a mysterious silver-haired stranger in the forest with a face similar to his own. His travel companion says that the stranger might be the Silver Sorcerer and is uncertain whether his appearance is a good or bad omen. Later that week, Murat’s life is completely upended when soldiers from a neighboring empire invade his village.

Will Murat survive and what role will the silver-haired stranger play in all of this?

I wondered the exact same thing when the competition was announced. I wasn't about to delete and re-upload my behemoth of a novel, anyway, so it was kind of a moot point. But it has some action scenes, it just has more... talking and traveling and plotting and scheming and discovering and exploring scenes.

And a LOT of scenes that are just there because I think they're funny.

I think that would qualify; as long as there's some amount of it, and not just one or two scenes overall that include something "action packed".

And oh boy, reuploading that many chapters would be insane! Although, you'd really only need/want to do 20 for the competition; maybe you could spend time editing them to polish it up? It'd be hard to garner the support that's already there for your current novel piece, but who knows!

The rules for the competition are to start a new, non-fanfiction series with #Tapas_AF_Tourney in the tags; if you're using something you've written before, you'll have to reupload it all to fit with the time frame, and you'll need 20 chapters by October 24th. Currently writing chapter 7 myself right now... the deadline draws nigh!

Yes, I have a story participating in the contest!

I think mine is pretty unique compared to a lot of the other entries because its also Urban-fantasy. If you were interested to learn about Action-fantasy, Urban-fantasy is similar. Like most other fantasy novels, things like magic and inhuman creatures are present, but the setting is usually modern day.

So instead of a magician casting a spell in a stone-walled kingdom, in my book, the MC is a monster hunter dodging witchcraft in his RV, traveling the backroads of America.

Greetings! I work on a comic named Karamador, which is both action and fantasy in medieval-reneissance fantasy world. I appreciate everyone who checks it out and gives it a read and possibly subscribes, likes, and comments. I tend to return these favors too.

In Karamador we follow the adventures of Sir Kiljaos Windmane, the lion paladin of wind. Sir Kiljaos is a wandering paladin and a wind elemental who travels around his homeland Pohjoland and the other parts of Karamador as knight errant, fighting the forces of chaos and helping those in need. During his adventures he also meets and teams up with many different companions to fight the evil forces, like the cruel undead, monstrous creatures, ruthless orcs, and the beastly insectoids of Hordium who took the life of the fair maiden he loved.

Although Karamador is set in a fantasy world, many of it's locations are based more or less on real locations. Many of the stories also involve real life legends and folk lore, especially from Finland and Scandinavia.
