Romance, particularly BL, is incredibly popular here on Tapas.I suppose somehow an audience grew for those type of things.

It's what's popular. I doubt so many people would be making romance/ BL comics if those genres didn't have large audiences just waiting to devour more content. This in turn incentifies other comic artists to meet this demand.

Yep, and Tapas has to play a bit more toward the market since they don't have the Korean equivalent of Google to back their site.

I totally understand this but I can still complain lol. It reminds me of a video I watched about pop music sounding more and more similar and how it could be a product of making music that appeals to the market and sells better (can't remember what the video is sadly). Supply and demand when applied to art leads to homogeneity and discourages creativity and experimentation and it seems like that applies to Tapas too.

It applies all around the net. But going by the same notion, hopefully you can see my frustration (one that's shared by a lot of other creators I'd imagine) that Eastern-inspired creations as a whole seem to be eking out ahead of more Western-influenced works at the moment.

Yeah I see. Most of the webcomics I'm actively following are Eastern inspired, including comics drawn in anime style. Ironically, the gag comic I draw for fun isn't Eastern inspired despite the fact that I'm Asian. Neither will my next comic that will have a story to be honest.

Oh, I like to complain as well because romance isn't my favorite genre. I sometimes think how many great non-romance stories are forever locked inside the heads of comic creators, because they're not the ones that bring in the likes and views.

And I don't blame creators (or fans of romance. There are great stories being told in that genre as well). Who wants to spend countless hours writing and drawing a story no-one reads? Not many.

Is it an abundance of demand, or an abundance of supply? Perhaps, with the barriers lowered, we are simply seeing more artists who want to tell romantic stories.

Romance honestly dominates a lot of storytelling platforms so I'm not too surprised to see it thriving here, especially when they have 3 romance specific genres to choose from (Romance/BL/GL)

I thinks its an abundance of both supply and demand tbh. People love it, and people love to write it. I'm sure it'll shift with time as always but for now romance it is.

Not to mention BL has always had a big audience. Especially when its often lacking for quality in mainstream media.

All the thumbnails for them look so much alike, too. There's always like a much taller, older boy looming over the smaller one with the smaller one making an annoyed face while the taller one has a smirk and is grabbing the smaller one's chin. LOL.

I'm an old woman. I just can't get into corny romances with two people who are way too hot, haha.

LOL there's a lot of overused tropes. It makes it all blend together. They have potential to be good and there's a market for it but people just hash out the same plots and characters it seems. Or maybe I'm jaded lol

I thought Tapas would follow like Line webtoon but it becomes like Webcomicapps and Mangatoon instead. At least the Line webtoon are not afraid to keep diverse the genre instead of Romance and this is how they get Anime adaptation. It's not the fault of creators would like to play safe to draw one popular genre and it's because most of the readers are dominate by females which it is sad reality.

I look upon on mangatoon contributors and it's surprise me that no matter the quality of romance webcomic would still getting likes and i see some non-romance webcomic didn't get likes at all (i read the comics and it is fairly good but at same time i feel bad).

At least the Line webtoon are not afraid to keep diverse the genre instead of Romance and this is how they get Anime adaptation.

Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, WT can afford to experiment and push genres that aren't traditionally money makers. Their parent company can take any financial hits from their comics sector, Tapas and the smaller sites you mentioned don't have parent companies/can't take the risk.

Those were smaller sites? I thought there were big companies and it makes sense why i getting more subs from WT than Tapas. I learn something new today.

Yeah, WT's parent company is basically Korean Google, and they already had an established prominence in the webcomics game with their original Korean site before making an English language branch.
